God renews His covenant with Abram by changing his name and giving him a sign. As Abraham, he is called to walk blamelessly before God. Discover the promise, the name, and the mark of the everlasting covenant.
Abram to Abraham – The Day the Name and Covenant Changed
When Abram was ninety-nine years old, the Lord appeared to him again.
God introduced Himself as the Almighty and said, “Walk before Me faithfully and be blameless. Then I will make My covenant between Me and you and will greatly increase your numbers.” [17:1–2]
God then changed Abram’s name to Abraham.
He said, “As for Me, this is My covenant with you: You will be the father of many nations.” [17:4]
God promised that this covenant would extend to his descendants forever.
As a sign of this everlasting covenant, God commanded circumcision.
Every male among Abraham’s descendants was to be circumcised on the eighth day.
It was not just a ritual—it was a visible mark of belonging to God’s people.
God also renamed Sarai to Sarah and promised that she would bear a son.
He said, “I will bless her and will surely give you a son by her… kings of peoples will come from her.” [17:16]
Abraham laughed and said, “If only Ishmael might live under Your blessing!” [17:18]
But God replied, “No, but your wife Sarah will bear you a son, and you will call him Isaac… I will establish My covenant with him as an everlasting covenant.” [17:19]
That very day, Abraham obeyed. He circumcised himself, his household, and even Ishmael.
The covenant was sealed not only with a promise, but with a mark upon the body.
Even when Abraham struggled or acted on his own, God did not abandon him.
Instead, God reaffirmed the covenant, gave him a new name, and called him to walk in faith.
God still speaks to us today: “Walk before Me faithfully and be blameless.”
Even in our weakness, His promises remain. He gives us a new identity and writes His covenant upon our lives.

너는 아브라함이라 – 이름을 바꾸시고 언약을 세우신 하나님
[창세기 17장]
하나님은 아브람의 이름을 바꾸시며, 언약을 새롭게 하셨습니다.
전능하신 하나님은 아브라함에게 믿음의 삶을 요구하시며, 그 언약의 징표로 할례를 명하셨습니다.
아브람에서 아브라함으로 – 이름과 언약이 바뀐 날
아브람이 아흔아홉 살 되었을 때, 하나님께서 다시 그에게 나타나셨습니다.
하나님은 자신을 전능하신 하나님이라고 하시며 말씀하셨습니다.
“...너는 내 앞에서 행하여 완전하라 내가 내 언약을 나와 너 사이에 두어 너를 크게 번성하게 하리라 하시니” [17:1–2]
그리고 하나님은 아브람의 이름을 “아브라함”으로 바꾸셨습니다.
“보라 내 언약이 너와 함께 있으니 너는 여러 민족의 아버지가 될지라” [17:4]
아브라함은 많은 자손을 얻게 될 것이며, 그 언약은 그의 후손에게까지 영원히 이어질 것이라고 하셨습니다.
하나님은 이 언약의 표시로 할례를 명령하셨습니다.
태어난 지 여드레가 된 모든 남자아이는 할례를 받아야 했습니다.
이것은 하나님의 백성이라는 증거였고, 하나님과의 언약을 몸에 새기는 행위였습니다.
아브라함의 아내 사래의 이름도 “사라”로 바뀌었습니다.
하나님은 그녀에게 아들을 주실 것이며, 민족의 어머니가 될 것이라 말씀하셨습니다.
“내가 그에게 복을 주어 그를 여러 민족의 어머니가 되게 하리니 민족의 여러 왕이 그에게서 나리라” [17:16]
이 말을 들은 아브라함은 속으로 웃으며 말했습니다.
“...이스마엘이나 하나님 앞에서 살기를 원하나이다.” [17:18]
하지만 하나님은 분명히 말씀하셨습니다.
“...아니라 네 아내 사라가 네게 아들을 낳으리니 너는 그 이름을 이삭이라 하라… 그의 후손에게 영원한 언약이 되리라” [17:19]
그날로 아브라함은 말씀에 순종하여,
자신과 집안의 모든 남자들, 그리고 이스마엘에게까지 할례를 행했습니다.
하나님과의 언약은 그렇게, 이름과 몸에 새겨져 기억되기 시작했습니다.
아브라함은 기다림 속에서 지치기도 하고, 때로는 자기 방법으로 앞서기도 했습니다.
그럼에도 하나님은 그를 포기하지 않으셨고, 다시 찾아와 이름을 바꾸시며 언약을 새롭게 하셨습니다.
하나님은 우리에게도 말씀하십니다.
“나는 전능한 하나님이라. 너는 내 앞에서 행하여 완전하라.”
그분은 우리가 넘어질 때에도, 불완전할 때에도 언약을 이루시는 분이십니다.
우리의 삶이 흔들릴 때에도, 하나님의 언약은 여전히 유효합니다.
이름을 바꾸신 하나님은, 오늘도 우리의 정체성과 부르심을 새롭게 하시고,
마음과 삶에 믿음의 흔적을 남기기를 원하십니다.
