Near the great trees of Mamre, Abraham was sitting at the entrance of his tent. In the heat of the day, three men suddenly appeared before him. Without hesitation, Abraham ran to greet them and offered them water, food, and rest with great hospitality.

As they ate, one of them said, “I will surely return to you about this time next year, and Sarah your wife will have a son.” [Genesis 18:10] Sarah was listening at the entrance of the tent. She laughed to herself, thinking, “After I am worn out and my lord is old, will I now have this pleasure?” [Genesis 18:12] The reality of her and Abraham’s age made the promise seem impossible.

Sarah's laughter may not have come from disbelief alone. She had likely hoped for a child for many years and experienced disappointment time and again. Scripture notes that she was well past the age of childbearing. Faced with physical limitations, the promise may have sounded too wonderful to believe. Her laughter may have reflected surprise, discomfort, or a deeply human reaction to unexpected hope.

Then the Lord said, “Is anything too hard for the Lord? I will return to you at the appointed time next year, and Sarah will have a son.” [Genesis 18:14] Sarah, afraid, denied laughing—but the Lord knew her heart.

Like Sarah, we sometimes laugh inside. When we’ve waited and nothing has changed, when faith feels distant, or when it seems simply too late for God to do something new. Yet God comes again. He reminds us of what He promised. “Is anything too hard for the Lord?” is not only a question from the past, but a living promise for today. Perhaps even our laughter is known by God. He sees the silent doubts and weariness behind it. And instead of rebuking, He draws near once more to speak His word— a word that will never fail.

마므레의 상수리 나무 곁에서, 아브라함은 장막 어귀에 앉아 있었습니다. 한낮의 열기가 가득한 시간, 갑자기 세 사람이 그 앞에 나타났습니다. 아브라함은 주저하지 않고 그들을 맞이하고, 물과 음식을 대접하며 정성을 다해 섬깁니다.

그들이 음식을 먹는 동안, 한 사람이 말합니다. “그가 이르시되 내년 이맘때...네 아내 사라에게 아들이 있으리라” [창세기 18:10] 장막 안에서 이 말을 들은 사라는 속으로 웃었습니다. “...내가 노쇠하였고 내 주인도 늙었으니 내게 무슨 즐거움이 있으리요” [창세기 18:12] 그녀는 이미 자신도 남편도 나이가 많다는 현실 앞에서, 오래된 약속이 이루어질 가능성을 믿기 어려웠던 것입니다.

사라가 웃은 건 단순한 불신에서 비롯된 것만은 아닐 수 있습니다. 그녀는 오랜 세월 아이를 바라며 살아왔고, 그 시간 동안 수많은 실망을 경험했을 것입니다. 성경은 사라가 나이가 많아 생리가 끊어졌다고 기록합니다. 육체의 한계를 받아들여야 했던 현실 앞에서, 약속은 너무 놀라운 일이었을지도 모릅니다. 그 웃음에는 어쩌면 놀람, 당황스러움, 그리고 인간적인 반응이 복합적으로 담겨 있었을 것입니다.

그러자 하나님께서 말씀하십니다. “여호와께 능하지 못한 일이 있겠느냐 기한이 이를 때에 내가 네게로 돌아오리니 사라에게 아들이 있으리라” [창세기 18:14] 사라는 두려워하며 “내가 웃지 않았습니다”라고 부인했지만, 하나님은 그녀의 마음을 이미 알고 계셨습니다.

우리는 종종 사라처럼 웃습니다. 기도했지만 아무 일도 일어나지 않았던 시간, 믿고 싶었지만 현실은 너무 단단했던 순간, 너무 늦어버린 것만 같은 나이와 상황 앞에서 말입니다.

그런데도 하나님은 다시 찾아오십니다. 우리가 놓아버린 약속을 다시 붙들게 하십니다. “여호와께 능하지 못한 일이 있겠느냐”는 말씀은, 오늘을 살아가는 우리에게도 여전히 유효한 하나님의 선언입니다.

어쩌면 하나님은 우리의 ‘웃음’까지도 기억하십니다. 그 웃음 속에 감춰진 마음의 상처와 긴 기다림을 아시기에, 하나님은 우리를 책망하지 않고 오히려 다가와 다시 말씀하십니다. 그분의 약속은 결코 잊히거나 무효되지 않습니다.
