Why did Sarah laugh? Maybe because she had waited too long, and nothing had changed in her life.
Her laughter felt more like resignation than disbelief. And instead of rebuking her, God remembered her laughter.
When three strangers visited Abraham’s tent, God reaffirmed His long-standing promise.
Sarah’s reaction to this unbelievable word was very human—full of doubt and surprise.
Three Visitors, a Surprising Promise, and a Hidden Reaction
The Three Visitors Arrive
Under the great oaks of Mamre, Abraham was sitting at the entrance of his tent.
In the heat of the day, three men appeared, and without hesitation, Abraham ran to greet them.
He welcomed them warmly with water, food, and heartfelt hospitality.
As they sat and shared a meal, the visitors spoke to Abraham:
“About this time next year, your wife Sarah will have a son.” [18:10]
God's Promise and Sarah's Reaction
Sarah was listening from inside the tent—and she laughed to herself.
“After I am worn out and my lord is old, will I now have this pleasure?” [18:12]
Her laughter wasn't necessarily disbelief. It may have come from years of waiting and quiet surrender.
Who could blame her? I understand her laughter completely.
Her body had long stopped functioning like before. Abraham was old.
Nothing in their life had changed. Even after praying and hoping, still—nothing.
To Sarah, every possibility seemed shut.
God Remembers the Laughter
Then the Lord said:
“Is anything too hard for the Lord? I will return to you at the appointed time next year, and Sarah will have a son.” [18:14]
Sarah, afraid, denied that she had laughed. But the Lord gently said,
“No, but you did laugh.” [18:15]
God remembered Sarah’s laughter—and He turned it from the end of doubt to the beginning of grace.
While human circumstances are limited, God’s promise goes beyond time itself.
Meditation
There are times when we, too, laugh like Sarah.
When God’s promise feels distant, when we pray and nothing happens,
when we start to believe it’s already too late—
even if we never say it aloud, we might have already laughed in our hearts, saying, “This is impossible.”
In those moments, let us ask ourselves again: His promises do not disappear.
“Is anything too hard for the Lord?”

사라가 웃은 이유 – 세 손님과 하나님의 약속
[창세기 18장]
사라는 왜 웃었을까요? 기다림은 너무 길었고, 현실은 아무것도 변한 것이 없어서였을 것 같아요.
그 웃음은 체념에 가까웠고, 하나님은 그 웃음을 꾸짖기보다 기억하셨어요.
세 명의 낯선 손님이 아브라함의 장막을 찾아왔을 때, 하나님은 오래된 약속을 다시 한 번 확증하셨어요.
그 믿기 어려운 약속 앞에서 사라의 반응은 인간적인 의심과 놀라움이었어요.
세 손님, 놀라운 약속, 그리고 숨겨진 반응
세 손님이 찾아오다
마므레의 상수리 나무 아래, 아브라함은 장막 어귀에 앉아 있었어요.
한낮의 열기 속에 세 사람이 그 앞에 나타났을 때, 아브라함은 망설임 없이 달려가 그들을 맞이하였고, 물과 음식을 대접하며 극진히 환대했어요.
아브라함의 따뜻한 섬김 앞에서 손님들은 음식을 나누며 이렇게 말했어요.
“내년 이맘때에 네 아내 사라에게 아들이 있으리라.” [18:10]
하나님의 약속과 사라의 반응
이 말을 장막 안에서 듣고 있던 사라는 속으로 웃었어요.
“내가 노쇠하였고 내 주인도 늙었으니 내게 무슨 즐거움이 있으리요.” [18:12]
사라의 웃음은 아마도 단순한 불신이라기보다는, 오랜 기다림과 체념 끝에 나온 인간적인 반응이었을 거예요.
왜 아니었겠어요. 저는 사라의 웃음이 충분히 이해가 가는걸요.
이미 생리가 끊어진 나이, 늙은 아브라함과 변한 것 없는 현실, 기도했지만 아무 일도 일어나지 않았던 시간들…
그녀는 모든 가능성이 닫혀 있다고 여겼을 것 같아요.
하나님은 웃음을 기억하신다
그러자 하나님께서 말씀하십니다.
“여호와께 능하지 못한 일이 있겠느냐 기한이 이를 때에 내가 네게로 돌아오리니 사라에게 아들이 있으리라.” [18:14]
사라는 두려워하며 웃지 않았다고 부인했지만, 하나님은 조용히 말씀하셨어요.
“아니라 네가 웃었느니라.” [18:15]
하나님은 사라의 웃음을 기억하셨고, 그 웃음이 불신의 끝이 아니라 은혜의 시작이 되게 하셨어요.
사람의 현실은 한계를 가졌지만, 하나님의 약속은 시간조차 넘어서죠.
묵상
우리도 사라처럼 웃을 때가 있어요. 하나님의 약속이 너무 멀게 느껴지고, 기도해도 아무 일도 일어나지 않았을 때,
또는 지금 이 순간이 너무 늦었다고 생각될 때… 우리는 표현하지 않았지만,
어쩌면 우리 마음속에서 '이건 안 될 거야.'라고 먼저 웃으며 결론지었는지도 모르죠.
그런 우리에게 스스로 물어보는 것은 어떨까요? 그분의 약속은 결코 사라지지 않으니까요.
“여호와께 능하지 못한 일이 있겠느냐?”
