Abraham pleads for mercy as judgment approaches Sodom. Two angels visit Lot, and God’s justice meets grace in a powerful story of rescue and remembrance.
Abraham’s Prayer for Lot – God’s Judgment on Sodom
In the previous passage, God reaffirmed His long-standing promise to Abraham and Sarah.
Now, another truth is revealed to Abraham—
a message of judgment. It was about the cities of Sodom and Gomorrah, steeped in corruption.
“Shall I hide from Abraham what I am about to do?”[18:17]
“The outcry against Sodom and Gomorrah is great, and their sin is very grave.”[18:20]
Hearing this, Abraham quietly stands before God. He can no longer remain silent.
“Will you indeed sweep away the righteous with the wicked? Suppose there are fifty righteous within the city—will you then sweep it away and not spare it for the fifty righteous who are in it?”[18:23–24]
His voice trembled. Yet his plea remained firm. God answered:
“If I find at Sodom fifty righteous in the city, I will spare the whole place for their sake.”[18:26]
Yet Abraham continued—forty-five, forty, thirty…
He kept lowering the number. Finally, he asked, “What if only ten are found?”
Each time, God replied, “I will not destroy it.”
But there were not even ten righteous in the city.
As the sun set, two angels arrived at Sodom. Lot was sitting at the gate and rose to meet them.
He brought them to his house and quietly shut the door.
The night in Sodom was anything but quiet. Men of the city surrounded the house.
“Where are the men who came to you tonight? Bring them out to us, that we may know them.”[19:5]
Lot stepped outside and pleaded with them. And then he said the unthinkable:
“I have two daughters who have not known any man. Let me bring them out to you, and do to them as you please. Only do nothing to these men, for they have come under the shelter of my roof.”[19:8]
His words echoed, but no one listened. The mob grew increasingly violent.
The angels pulled Lot back inside. They struck the men outside with blindness.
They said to Lot:
“We are about to destroy this place, because the outcry against its people has become great before the Lord. The Lord has sent us to destroy it.”[19:13]
Lot warned his sons-in-law, but they thought he was joking.
“But he seemed to his sons-in-law to be jesting.”[19:14]
At dawn, the city faced its final moments.
The angels gave Lot a firm command:
“Up! Take your wife and your two daughters who are here, lest you be swept away in the punishment of the city.”[19:15]
But Lot hesitated. The angels grabbed their hands and led them out by force.
“The Lord being merciful to him, they brought him out and set him outside the city.”[19:16]
They had to flee quickly.
“Escape for your life. Do not look back or stop anywhere in the valley. Escape to the hills, lest you be swept away.”[19:17]
But the warning was not fully obeyed.
Lot’s wife looked back—and became a pillar of salt.[19:26]
Lot and his two daughters went into the hills and lived in a cave.
Believing that all men were gone, his daughters gave their father wine. Each lay with him on separate nights.
The sons born from them became the ancestors of Moab and Ammon.[19:36–38]
The next morning, Abraham returned to the place where he had stood before the Lord.
As he looked out, he saw smoke rising from the land like the smoke of a furnace.
And Scripture says:
“God remembered Abraham and sent Lot out of the midst of the overthrow.”[19:29]
✨ Reflection: Remembered in the Ruins
1. God welcomes intercession
Abraham did not stay silent before God’s plan. He stepped in for the sake of the righteous, for the sake of mercy. And God listened. His remembrance of Abraham later brought Lot out of destruction.
2. Salvation came, but so did scars
Though Lot was rescued, the loss was deep. His wife looked back and was turned to salt. His daughters, shaken and fearful, acted from desperation. Salvation was real—but so was the brokenness.
3. The God who still remembers
Even as the cities fell, God remembered Abraham. He still hears the prayers of the righteous and offers rescue in the midst of ruin. His mercy endures, even in the darkest places.

소돔과 고모라 멸망 – 아브라함의 기도와 롯의 구원
[창세기 18–19장]
아브라함이 소돔을 위해 기도하고, 두 천사가 롯의 집을 방문합니다. 그리고 마침내 하나님의 심판이 시작됩니다. 창세기에서 가장 극적인 구원 이야기, 그 안에 담긴 긍휼과 공의를 따라가 봅니다.
롯을 위한 아브라함의 기도 – 하나님의 소돔 심판
지난 편에서 하나님은 아브라함과 사라에게 오래된 약속을 다시 확인하셨습니다.
그리고 이번에는, 아브라함 앞에 또 다른 진실이 열립니다.
그것은 심판의 메시지였습니다. 타락한 도시, 소돔과 고모라에 대한 이야기였지요.
“...내가 하려는 것을 아브라함에게 숨기겠느냐”[18:17]
“...소돔과 고모라에 대한 부르짖음이 크고 그 죄악이 심히 무거우니”[18:20]
그 말씀을 들은 아브라함은 조용히 하나님의 앞에 섭니다. 그는 더 이상 침묵할 수 없었습니다.
“...주께서 의인을 악인과 함께 멸하시려나이까 그 성 중에 의인 오십 명이 있을지라도 주께서 그 곳을 멸하시고 그 오십 의인을 위하여 용서하지 아니하시리이까”[18:23–24]
아브라함의 음성은 떨렸지만, 확고했습니다. 하나님은 대답하십니다.
“...내가 만일 소돔 성읍 가운데서 의인 오십 명을 찾으면 그들을 위하여 온 지역을 용서하리라”[18:26]
하지만 아브라함의 간구는 멈추지 않았습니다.
사십오, 사십, 삼십…
그는 수치를 낮춰가며 마지막으로 이렇게 말합니다.
“열 명이라도 있다면…”
하나님은 그때마다 말씀하십니다.
“멸하지 아니하리라.”
그러나 그 도시에 열 명의 의인조차 없었습니다.
어느덧 해가 기울고, 두 천사가 소돔에 이릅니다. 성문 앞에 앉아 있던 롯은 그들을 보고 일어나 맞이합니다.
그는 그들을 자기 집으로 안내하며 조용히 문을 닫습니다.
하지만 소돔의 밤은 조용하지 않았습니다. 성 안의 남자들이 몰려와 롯의 집을 에워쌉니다.
“...오늘 밤 네게 온 사람들이 어디 있느냐 이끌어내라 우리가 그들을 상관하리라”[19:5]
롯은 문을 열고 나가 간곡히 부탁합니다. 그리고 상상도 할 수 없는 말을 꺼냅니다.
“내게 남자를 가까이 하지 아니한 두 딸이 있노라 청하건대 내가 그들을 너희에게로 이끌어 내리니 너희 눈에 좋을 대로 그들에게 행하고...이 사람들에게는 아무 일도 저지르지 말라”[19:8]
그의 말은 울려 퍼졌지만, 아무도 듣지 않았습니다. 성난 무리는 점점 더 거칠어졌습니다.
그때 천사들이 급히 롯을 끌어당겨 집 안으로 들이고, 밖에 있는 자들의 눈을 멀게 하십니다.
그들은 롯에게 말합니다.
“그들에 대한 부르짖음이 여호와 앞에 크므로 여호와께서 이 곳을 멸하시려고 우리를 보내셨나니 우리가 멸하리라”[19:13]
롯은 예비사위들에게도 피하라고 말하지만, 그들은 그 경고를 농담처럼 여깁니다.
“그의 사위들은 농담으로 여겼더라”[19:14]
다음 날 아침, 하늘은 밝아오지만 도시는 마지막 밤을 보내고 있었습니다.
천사들은 롯에게 단호히 명령합니다.
“...일어나 여기 있는 네 아내와 두 딸을 이끌어 내라 이 성의 죄악 중에 함께 멸망할까 하노라”[19:15]
그러나 롯은 망설였습니다. 그때 두 천사는 그들의 손을 잡고 강제로 끌어냅니다.
“...그 사람들이 롯의 손과 그 아내의 손과 두 딸의 손을 잡아 인도하여 성 밖에 두니 여호와께서 그에게 자비를 더하심이었더라”[19:16]
그들은 서둘러 도망해야 했습니다.
“...도망하여 생명을 보존하라 돌아보거나 들에 머물지 말고 산으로 도망하여 멸망함을 면하라”[19:17]
하지만 그 경고는 온전히 지켜지지 못했습니다.
롯의 아내는 마지막으로 뒤를 돌아보았고, 그 순간 그녀는 소금 기둥이 되고 말았습니다.[19:26]
롯은 두 딸과 함께 산속에 은신하게 됩니다. 두 딸은 세상에 남자가 다 사라졌다고 생각하고,
아버지에게 술을 마시게 한 뒤 차례로 동침합니다.
그렇게 태어난 자손은 모압과 암몬의 조상이 됩니다.[19:36–38]
다음 날 아침, 아브라함은 하나님 앞에 섰던 그 자리를 다시 찾습니다.
그가 바라본 땅에는 연기가 화덕처럼 치솟고 있었습니다.
그리고 성경은 말합니다.
“하나님이 아브라함을 생각하사, 롯을 그 엎으시는 중에 내보내셨더라"[19:29]
✨ 묵상: 무너짐 속에서 기억된 이름
1. 하나님은 간구의 자리를 여십니다
아브라함은 하나님의 뜻 앞에 침묵하지 않았습니다.
그는 의인의 생명을 위하여, 한 도시를 위하여, 자비를 구했습니다.
하나님은 그 기도를 들으셨고, 그 이름을 기억하셨습니다.
2. 구원은 있었지만, 상처도 남았습니다
롯은 성 밖으로 인도되었지만, 그의 삶에는 깊은 흠집이 남았습니다.
뒤돌아본 아내는 소금 기둥이 되었고,
그의 딸들은 불안과 왜곡된 판단 속에서 자손을 낳게 됩니다.
구원은 완전했지만, 삶은 온전하지 않았습니다.
3. 여전히 기억하시는 하나님
무너진 도시 속에서도, 하나님은 아브라함의 이름을 잊지 않으셨습니다.
그 기도를 통해 롯은 살아남았습니다.
그분의 자비는 그날 멈추지 않았고,
오늘도 여전히 죄의 한가운데서 회복의 길을 찾는 자들에게 열려 있습니다.
