Sarai’s impatience brought tension into their household, and Hagar fled into the wilderness.
There, God met her and heard her cry.
Follow the story of Ishmael’s birth and the name Hagar gave to the God who sees her—El Roi.
A Cry Heard in the Wilderness
God showed Abram the stars in the sky and said,
“...So shall your offspring be.” [15:5]
Abram believed, but Sarai still had no child, and the promise felt slow to come.
As the waiting dragged on, Sarai gave her servant Hagar to Abram, hoping to build a family through her.
“The Lord has kept me from having children. Go, sleep with my servant...” [16:2]
Abram agreed, and when Hagar conceived, she began to despise Sarai.
Sarai became furious, and Abram let her deal with Hagar as she wished—deepening the conflict.
Unable to endure Sarai’s harsh treatment, Hagar ran away to the wilderness.
There, the angel of the Lord appeared and spoke to her:
“Go back to your mistress and submit to her. I will increase your descendants so much that they will be too numerous to count.” [16:9–10]
Then he added,
“You are now pregnant and you will give birth to a son. You shall name him Ishmael,
for the Lord has heard of your misery.” [16:11]
Hagar gave the Lord a name—El Roi, which means “the God who sees me.” [16:13]
She returned and gave birth to a son, and Abram named him Ishmael.
At that time, Abram was eighty-six years old.
Abram’s journey began with faith, but there were moments when he couldn’t wait for God’s timing.
He was human—just like us—and waiting was hard.
When it feels like God’s promises are delayed, it’s easy to turn to our own plans.
Perhaps Abram and Sarai felt the same.
But even in their failure, God kept working.
Though Hagar was cast aside, God called her, met her, and heard her.
He doesn’t forget the tears that come from fear or impatience.
We must remember the name Ishmael—“God hears.”
Words spoken in frustration, tears cried in the wilderness—
God never turns away.

하나님의 때를 기다리지 못한 아브람 – 하갈과 이스마엘의 이야기
[창세기 16장]
사래의 조급한 선택은 집안에 갈등을 가져왔고, 결국 하갈은 광야로 도망쳤습니다.
그곳에서 하나님은 하갈을 만나시고, 그녀의 울부짖음을 들으셨습니다.
하갈이 부른 '나를 보시는 하나님(엘로이)'이라는 이름과, 이스마엘의 탄생 이야기를 따라가 보세요.
광야에서 들으신 울음
하나님은 아브람에게 하늘의 별을 보여주시며 말씀하셨습니다.
“...네 자손이 이와 같으리라...” [15:5]
아브람은 그 말씀을 믿었지만, 사래에게는 여전히 아이가 없었고, 약속은 더디게만 느껴졌죠.
그 기다림이 길어지자 사래는 여종 하갈을 아브람에게 주어 자식을 얻으려 하죠.
“여호와께서 내 출산을 허락하지 아니하셨으니... 내 여종에게 들어가라...” [16:2]
아브람이 사래의 말을 따르자 하갈은 임신했고 여주인 사래를 멸시하기 시작했어요.
사래는 분노했고, 아브람은 하갈을 사래에게 맡기며 갈등이 깊어졌습니다.
사래의 학대를 견디지 못한 하갈은 광야로 도망쳤어요.
그곳에서 여호와의 사자가 나타나 그녀에게 말씀하셨습니다.
“네 여주인에게 돌아가 그 수하에 복종하라... 내가 네 씨를 크게 번성하리라” [16:9–10]
그리고 이어서 말씀하셨어요.
“네가 임신하였은즉 아들을 낳으리니 그 이름을 이스마엘이라 하라
이는 여호와께서 네 고통을 들으셨음이니라” [16:11]
하갈은 그 하나님을 ‘엘로이’, 곧 “나를 살피시는 하나님”이라 부릅니다. [16:13]
그녀는 돌아가 아들을 낳았고, 아브람은 그의 이름을 이스마엘이라 지었어요.
그때 아브람의 나이는 86세였습니다.
믿음으로 시작한 아브람의 여정에도, 하나님의 때를 기다리지 못한 순간이 있었어요.
아브람도 사람이고, 사람이기에 연약하니까요.
그 기다림은 너무 길고, 고통스러웠기에 사람의 방법이 하나님의 뜻보다 앞서버리기도 하는 것 같아요.
아마 아브람과 사래의 마음도 그러했을지 모르겠어요.
하지만 하나님은 여전히 일하십니다.
하갈은 외면당했지만, 하나님은 그녀를 부르시고 만나시고 들으셨어요.
조급함 속에서 흘러나온 눈물까지도 잊지 않으십니다.
우리가 기억해야 할 이름은 이스마엘, “하나님이 들으신다”는 그 이름이예요.
답답함 속에서 내뱉은 말, 고통 중에 터진 눈물…
하나님은 결코 외면하지 않으시죠.
지금도 하나님의 때를 기다리는 당신에게, 이 이야기가 위로가 되기를 바랄께요.
