When Abram Couldn’t Wait for God’s Timing – The Story of Hagar and Ishmael

[Genesis 16]

God had promised Abram that his descendants would be as numerous as the stars. Abram believed, and it was credited to him as righteousness. But time passed, and Sarai still had no child.

Sarai took matters into her own hands. “The Lord has kept me from having children. Go, sleep with my slave; perhaps I can build a family through her.” [Genesis 16:2] Abram agreed, and Hagar became pregnant.

But as soon as Hagar knew she was pregnant, she began to despise Sarai. Sarai, in turn, blamed Abram and treated Hagar harshly. Unable to bear it, Hagar fled into the wilderness.

There, by a spring on the way to Shur, the angel of the Lord appeared to her. “Go back to your mistress and submit to her,” the angel said. “I will increase your descendants so much that they will be too numerous to count.” [Genesis 16:9–10]

The angel also said, “You are now pregnant and you will give birth to a son. You shall name him Ishmael, for the Lord has heard of your misery.” [Genesis 16:11] God saw the one no one else saw, and He listened to the one no one else listened to.

In response, Hagar gave God a name: El Roi — “You are the God who sees me.” [Genesis 16:13] She returned and gave birth to a son, and Abram named him Ishmael. Abram was 86 years old.

Even in Abram’s journey that began with faith, there were moments when he could not wait for God’s timing. The waiting was too long and too painful, and at times, human choices stepped ahead of God’s will. Sometimes, action seems easier than waiting. Perhaps Abram and Sarai felt the same way.

Yet God continued to work even in those mistakes. Hagar was cast out, but God called her, met her, and heard her. He does not forget even the tears that come from our impatience.

The name we must remember is Ishmael— “God hears.” The words spoken in frustration, the tears cried in pain… God never turns away.

하나님은 아브람에게 하늘의 별을 보여주시며 말씀하셨습니다. “...네 자손이 이와 같으리라...” [창세기 15:5] 아브람은 그 말씀을 믿었지만, 사래에게는 여전히 아이가 없었고, 약속은 더디게만 느껴졌습니다.

그 기다림이 길어지자, 사래는 여종 하갈을 아브람에게 주어 자식을 얻으려 합니다. “사래가 아브람에게 이르되 여호와께서 내 출산을 허락하지 아니하셨으니 원하건대 내 여종에게 들어가라 내가 혹 그로 말미암아 자녀를 얻을까 하노라 하매 아브람이 사래의 말을 들으니라” [창세기 16:2] 하갈은 임신했고, 여주인 사래를 멸시하기 시작합니다. 사래는 분노했고, 아브람은 하갈을 사래에게 맡깁니다.

사래의 학대를 견디지 못한 하갈은 광야로 도망쳤습니다. 그곳에서 여호와의 사자가 나타나 그녀에게 말씀하셨습니다. “...네 여주인에게 돌아가서 그 수하에 복종하라...내가 네 씨를 크게 번성하여 그 수가 많아 셀 수 없게 하리라” [창세기 16:9–10]

사자는 이어 말합니다. “...네가 임신하였은즉 아들을 낳으리니 그 이름을 이스마엘이라 하라 이는 여호와께서 네 고통을 들으셨음이니라” [창세기 16:11] 하나님은 하갈의 고통의 부르짖음을 들으셨고, 그녀를 위로하셨습니다.

하갈은 그 하나님을 엘로이, “나를 살피시는 하나님”이라 부릅니다. [창세기 16:13] 그녀는 돌아가 아들을 낳았고, 아브람은 그의 이름을 이스마엘이라 지었습니다. 그때 아브람의 나이는 86세였습니다.

믿음으로 시작한 아브람의 여정에도, 때로는 하나님의 때를 기다리지 못한 순간이 있었습니다. 그 기다림은 너무 길고, 너무 고통스러웠기에 사람의 방법이 하나님의 뜻보다 앞서버리기도 합니다. 기다림보다 행동이 더 쉬워 보일 때도 있습니다. 아마 아브람과 사래의 마음도 그러했을지 모르겠습니다.

하지만 하나님은 그 실수 속에서도 여전히 일하십니다. 하갈은 외면당했지만, 하나님은 그녀를 부르시고 만나시고 들으셨습니다. 그분은 조급함 속에서 흘러나온 눈물까지도 잊지 않으십니다.

우리가 기억해야 할 이름은 이스마엘, “하나님이 들으신다”는 그 이름입니다. 답답함 속에서 내뱉은 말, 고통 중에 터진 눈물… 하나님은 결코 외면하지 않으십니다.

지금도 하나님의 때를 기다리는 당신에게, 이 이야기가 위로가 되기를 바랍니다.
