Isaac dug wells just like his father Abraham—but conflict followed each effort. Instead of fighting, he kept moving until harmony found him in Beersheba. His quiet surrender became the path to divine blessing.
Harmony Found in Beersheba – Isaac’s Graceful Restraint and God’s Blessing
A famine came upon the land, and Isaac went to Gerar. Like his father Abraham, he had to leave his home. But God told him not to go down to Egypt.
“Stay in this land for a while, and I will be with you and bless you.” [26:3] Isaac obeyed.
He lied out of fear, saying his wife Rebekah was his sister—just as Abraham had done. But God protected them. Isaac sowed in that land and reaped a hundredfold. His wealth grew, and the Philistines envied him.
The local people blocked up his father’s wells. Then, Abimelek, king of Gerar, told Isaac to leave. “Move away from us; you have become too powerful for us.” [26:16]
Isaac moved to the valley and reopened wells. But herders quarreled over them. He named the first well Esek (dispute), and the second Sitnah (opposition). Each time, he stepped away, choosing not to fight.
At the third well, no one quarreled. Isaac named it Rehoboth, saying: “Now the Lord has given us room and we will flourish in the land.” [26:22]
He then went up to Beersheba, where God appeared again. “Do not be afraid, for I am with you… I will bless you.” [26:24] There, Isaac built an altar and called on the name of the Lord.
Surprisingly, Abimelek came to visit. Isaac asked, “Why have you come to me, since you were hostile and sent me away?” [26:27]
Abimelek replied, “We saw clearly that the Lord was with you.” [26:28] They made a covenant of peace and parted in good terms.
That same day, Isaac’s servants found another well. “We’ve found water!” He named it Shibah, and the town became known as Beersheba.
Reflection – The Strength in Quiet Strength
Isaac’s path was not smooth. Conflict met him at every well. Yet he didn’t respond with strength or strife. Rather than confrontation, he embraced stillness and waited.
His quiet wasn’t a sign of frailty—it was rooted in faith. In a world that honors assertion, Isaac shows a different kind of courage: the strength to yield.
When he finally reached Beersheba, it wasn’t just land or water he found—it was the presence of God, the renewal of a sacred agreement, and reconciliation with his enemy.

우물 분쟁과 언약 – 이삭과 아비멜렉의 화해
[창세기 26장]
이삭은 우물을 파는 곳마다 분쟁이 일어났습니다. 그러나 그는 싸우기보다 양보를 택했고, 결국 평화의 자리, 브엘세바에 이르게 됩니다. 조용히 물러나는 듯 보이지만, 오히려 믿음의 담대함이 담긴 이삭의 선택은 진정한 언약의 길로 이어집니다.
브엘세바에서 찾은 평화 – 이삭의 양보와 하나님의 복
기근이 든 땅에서 이삭은 그랄로 내려갔습니다. 아버지 아브라함처럼, 그도 떠날 수밖에 없었습니다. 하지만 하나님은 그에게 애굽으로 가지 말고 이 땅에 머물라고 말씀하셨습니다.
“이 땅에 거류하면 내가 너와 함께 있어 네게 복을 주고...” [26:3]
이삭은 그대로 순종했습니다.
그랄에서 머무는 동안, 이삭은 아버지처럼 자신의 아내를 누이라 하며 두려움 속에 거짓을 말하기도 했습니다. 그러나 하나님은 그를 지켜주셨고, 이삭은 농사에서 큰 복을 받아 백 배의 수확을 얻습니다.
그러나 축복이 이어지자, 주변 사람들의 시기와 갈등도 커졌습니다. 블레셋 사람들이 그의 우물을 막았고, 결국 그랄 왕 아비멜렉은 이삭에게 떠나달라고 말합니다.
“네가 우리보다 크게 강성한즉 우리를 떠나라” [26:16]
이삭은 그랄 골짜기로 내려가 다시 우물을 팠습니다. 그곳에서도 목자들과 다툼이 있었습니다.
첫 번째 우물에서는 에섹(다툼)이라 이름 짓고,
두 번째 우물에서는 싯나(대적함)이라 이름 지었습니다.
그는 계속해서 물러났습니다. 다투지 않기 위해, 싸우지 않기 위해.
그리고 세 번째 우물을 팠을 때, 다툼이 없었습니다.
그는 기쁨으로 그 우물을 르호봇이라 부르며 이렇게 말했습니다.
“이제는 여호와께서 우리를 위하여 넓게 하셨으니 이 땅에서 우리가 번성하리로다” [26:22]
그 후 이삭은 브엘세바로 올라갔고, 그날 밤 하나님이 다시 나타나 말씀하셨습니다.
“내 종 아브라함을 위하여 내가 너와 함께 있어 네게 복을 주어..." [26:24]
이삭은 그곳에 제단을 쌓고 하나님의 이름을 불렀습니다.
놀랍게도 그때, 이삭을 내쫓았던 아비멜렉이 다시 찾아옵니다.
이삭이 묻습니다.
“...나를 미워하여 나에게 너희를 떠나게 하였거늘 어찌하여 내게 왔느냐” [26:27]
아비멜렉은 고백합니다.
“여호와께서 너와 함께 계심을 우리가 분명히 보았으므로...” [26:28]
그들은 서로 맹세하고 평화의 언약을 맺습니다. 다음 날 아침, 평안히 작별하였습니다.
그리고 그날, 이삭의 종들이 또 하나의 우물을 발견하고 주인에게 소식을 전합니다.
“우리가 물을 얻었나이다.”
이삭은 그 우물을 세바라 불렀고, 그 이름은 브엘세바가 되어 오늘까지 불립니다.
묵상 – 평화를 선택한 믿음
이삭의 길은 평탄하지 않았습니다. 한 걸음 내딛을 때마다 시기와 다툼이 따랐고, 우물을 파는 곳마다 분쟁이 일었습니다. 그러나 그는 맞서기보다 물러났고, 양보보다 넓은 복을 택했습니다. 그의 물러섬은 두려움이 아니라 믿음이었습니다.
이삭은 침묵했지만, 그의 삶은 말하고 있었습니다.
다툼이 없는 곳을 찾기까지 포기하지 않았고, 하나님이 주시는 복은 사람의 시기와 가로막음 속에서도 멈추지 않는다는 것을 보여주었습니다.
그리고 마침내 브엘세바에서, 그는 하나님과 다시 언약을 나누고, 그를 쫓아냈던 사람들과 화해하며, 진정한 평화의 자리에 이릅니다.
다툼이 일어날 때, 우리는 어떻게 반응할까요?
때로는 이삭처럼 물러서는 것이 하나님 앞에서 가장 믿음 있는 선택일 수 있습니다.
복은 언제나 소유가 아닌 순종 속에서 시작됩니다. 오늘 나는 다툼 앞에서 평화를 택하는 용기를 내보려 합니다.
