The Marriage of Isaac and Rebekah – God’s Guidance

After the death of Sarah, Abraham had grown old, and the Lord had blessed him in every way. But one task remained on his heart: finding a wife for his son, Isaac.

Abraham called in his trusted servant, the one in charge of all he owned, and made him swear an oath. “You must not get a wife for my son from the daughters of the Canaanites. Go instead to my country and my relatives and get a wife for Isaac.” [24:3–4]

The servant departed on a long journey to the town of Nahor in Mesopotamia, taking ten camels. He stopped by a well outside the city and prayed,

“Lord, God of my master Abraham, make me successful today... May it be that when I say to a young woman, ‘Please let down your jar that I may have a drink,’ she says, ‘Drink, and I’ll water your camels too.’ Let her be the one you have chosen for your servant Isaac.” [24:12–14]

Before he had finished praying, Rebekah came out with her jar on her shoulder. She was the daughter of Bethuel, son of Milkah, who was the wife of Abraham’s brother Nahor. The servant ran to her and asked for water, and she replied, “Drink, my lord,” and then said, “I’ll draw water for your camels too.” [24:18–19]

The servant watched her closely in silence, wondering if the Lord had made his journey successful. [24:21] Then he bowed down and worshiped the Lord.

He went to Rebekah’s household and told her family everything: how God had blessed Abraham, how Isaac had been born in Abraham’s old age, and how he had been sent to find a wife for him. [24:35–37]

Rebekah’s father and brother said, “This is from the Lord; we can say nothing to you one way or the other.” [24:50] Then they asked Rebekah, and she answered plainly, “I will go.” [24:58]

Rebekah left her family and traveled toward the land of Canaan. Isaac, meanwhile, was out in the field meditating near Beer Lahai Roi. He looked up and saw camels approaching. Rebekah saw him too and asked who he was. When she heard it was Isaac, she took her veil and covered herself. [24:65]

The servant told Isaac everything he had done. “Isaac brought her into the tent of his mother Sarah, and he married Rebekah. So she became his wife, and he loved her; and Isaac was comforted after his mother’s death.” [24:67]

This journey began with prayer and ended in divine fulfillment. Abraham’s servant prayed specifically, and God responded clearly. Rebekah responded not only with kindness, but with courage to leave her home. Isaac remained where he was, meditating quietly—until he saw God’s answer coming toward him.

When Rebekah learned that the man in the field was Isaac, she covered herself with a veil. It was more than tradition—it was a sign of humility, reverence, and readiness for what God had prepared.

When we face decisions, we can live like the people in this story: a servant who prayed with faith, a woman who obeyed with trust, and a man who waited in quiet readiness.

God still leads today—gently, faithfully, and in perfect time. May we follow Him with reverence, trust, and expectation.

At the end of God's leading is always His comfort, His timing, and His love. Like Rebekah, may we walk forward with a covered heart and a faith that trusts even before it sees.

창세기 24장은 하나님께 인도받은 만남의 이야기입니다. 아브라함의 종은 기도했고, 리브가는 응답했습니다. 그리고 이삭은 묵상 중에 하나님이 준비하신 아내를 만나게 됩니다.

리브가와 이삭의 결혼 – 하나님의 인도하심

사라가 세상을 떠난 후, 아브라함은 나이가 많아졌고, 여호와께서는 그에게 복을 주셔서 모든 일이 형통했습니다. 그러나 그의 마음에는 한 가지 남은 숙제가 있었습니다. 바로 아들 이삭의 결혼이었습니다.

아브라함은 집안 모든 소유를 맡고 있는 늙은 종을 불러 말했습니다. “...너는 내가 거주하는 이 지방 가나안 족속의 딸 중에서 내 아들을 위하여 아내를 택하지 말고 내 고향 내 족속에게로 가서 내 아들 이삭을 위하여 아내를 택하라” [24:3–4]

종은 메소포타미아의 나홀 성으로 향했습니다. 우물가에 도착한 그는 기도했습니다. “...여호와여 원하건대 오늘 나에게 순조롭게 만나게 하사... 내가 우물 곁에 서 있다가 한 소녀에게 이르기를 청하건대 너는 물동이를 기울여 나로 마시게 하라 하리니 그의 대답이 마시라 내가 당신의 낙타에게도 마시게 하리라 하면 그는 주께서 주의 종 이삭을 위하여 정하신 자라” [24:12–14]

기도가 끝나기도 전에 리브가가 나타났고, 그의 행동은 종의 기도와 정확히 일치했습니다. [24:18–19] 종은 조용히 바라보며, “여호와께서 과연 평탄한 길을 주신 여부를 알고자 하더니” 살폈습니다. [24:21]

이후 종은 리브가의 집으로 가서 모든 일을 설명했고, 가족은 말했습니다. “이 일이 여호와께로 말미암았으니 우리는 가부를 말할 수 없노라” [24:50] 리브가 역시 말했습니다. “가겠나이다” [24:58]

리브가는 가나안으로 향했고, 이삭은 브엘라해로이 근처 들에서 묵상하다가 그녀를 보았습니다. 그녀는 면박을 가지고 몸을 가렸습니다. [24:65]

종은 모든 일을 설명했고, “이삭이 리브가를 인도하여 그의 어머니 사라의 장막으로 들이고 그를 맞이하여 아내로 삼고 사랑하였으니 이삭이 그의 어머니를 장례한 후에 위로를 얻었더라” [24:67]

기도로 시작된 여정이 하나님의 손길 속에서 이루어졌습니다. 아브라함의 종은 간절히 기도했고, 하나님은 그 기도에 정밀하게 응답하셨습니다. 리브가는 하나님의 인도하심에 순종하며 가족을 떠나는 결단을 했고, 이삭은 묵상하는 자리에서 하나님의 응답을 만났습니다.

그리고 리브가는, 자신에게 다가오는 이가 이삭이라는 사실을 들었을 때 면박을 가리고 자신을 감췄습니다. 그녀의 행동은 단순한 문화적 예절을 넘어, 하나님 앞에서의 겸손한 태도이자, 새로운 관계 앞에서의 조심스러운 준비된 마음이었습니다.

삶에서 중요한 결정을 내려야 할 때, 우리는 이 이야기 속 인물들처럼 살아갈 수 있습니다. 기도로 뜻을 구하는 종처럼, 하나님의 부르심에 순종한 리브가처럼, 묵상하며 기다린 이삭처럼 말입니다.

하나님은 지금도 그분의 뜻을 따라 준비해두신 길 위에서 우리를 기다리십니다. 그 인도하심 앞에, 우리는 겸손히 마음을 가리고, 믿음으로 걸어갈 수 있기를 바랍니다. 그 길의 끝에는 반드시, 하나님이 예비하신 위로와 사랑이 기다리고 있을 것입니다.
