A Journey That Began with Prayer – Meeting Rebekah by God’s Leading
Searching for Isaac’s Bride
After Sarah passed away, Abraham had grown very old, and the Lord had blessed him in every way. But one concern remained in his heart—his son Isaac’s marriage. Abraham called his senior servant, the one in charge of all his possessions, and said:
“Do not get a wife for my son from the daughters of the Canaanites, among whom I am living. Go instead to my country and my own relatives and get a wife for my son Isaac.” [Genesis 24:3–4]
A Prayer at the Well
The servant set out for the town of Nahor in Mesopotamia. When he arrived at the well, he prayed to God first:
“Lord, God of my master Abraham, make me successful today... I will say to a young woman, ‘Please let down your jar that I may have a drink.’ If she says, ‘Drink, and I’ll water your camels too,’ let her be the one you have chosen for your servant Isaac.” [Genesis 24:12–14]
Rebekah, the Answered Prayer
Before he had even finished praying, Rebekah appeared. Her actions matched his prayer exactly. [24:18–19]
The servant watched her silently to see “whether or not the Lord had made his journey successful.” [24:21]
He later went to her household and explained everything, and her family responded,
“This is from the Lord; we can say nothing to you one way or the other.” [24:50]
And Rebekah said, “I will go.” [24:58]
That simple phrase, “I will go,” felt surprisingly weighty to me. It marked the beginning of a love story written by God—honest, bold, and quietly beautiful. My heart fluttered reading it.
The Veil and the Meeting
Rebekah journeyed toward Canaan, and Isaac was meditating in the fields near Beer Lahai Roi when he saw her approaching.
She took her veil and covered herself. [24:65]
The servant told Isaac everything that had happened,
“Isaac brought her into the tent of his mother Sarah, and he married Rebekah. So she became his wife, and he loved her; and Isaac was comforted after his mother’s death.” [24:67]
🙏 Walking the Journey by Faith
It all started with a prayer, and step by step, God’s guidance became clear.
The servant’s hope was met with quiet confirmation.
Rebekah chose to leave behind everything familiar,
and Isaac, waiting in stillness, met the one prepared for him.
When Rebekah learned the man coming toward her was Isaac, she quietly lowered her veil. It wasn’t just a cultural gesture—it felt like reverence, like a heart humbly prepared for something sacred.
Their story reminds us what it means to trust God.
A servant who prayed, a woman who said yes, and a man who waited with faith.
Each of them walked a different path, but all were led by the same grace.
Even now, God waits for us on the path He has prepared.

이삭의 배필이 된 리브가
[창세기 24장]
창세기 24장은 하나님께서 인도하신 만남의 이야기예요. 아브라함의 종은 기도했고, 리브가는 응답했죠. 그렇게 이삭은 묵상 중에 하나님이 준비하신 아내를 만나게 됩니다. 로맨틱한 사랑이야기 시작할께요.
기도로 시작된 여정 – 하나님의 인도하심을 따라 만난 리브가
이삭의 배필을 찾아서
사라가 세상을 떠난 후, 아브라함은 나이가 많아졌고, 여호와께서는 그에게 복을 주셔서 모든 일이 형통했습니다. 그러나 그의 마음에는 한 가지 숙제가 남아 있었어요. 바로 아들 이삭의 결혼이었습니다. 아브라함은 집안 모든 소유를 맡고 있는 늙은 종을 불러서 말했어요.
“...너는 내가 거주하는 이 지방 가나안 족속의 딸 중에서 내 아들을 위하여 아내를 택하지 말고 내 고향 내 족속에게로 가서 내 아들 이삭을 위하여 아내를 택하라” [24:3–4]
우물가의 기도
종은 메소포타미아의 나홀 성으로 향했습니다. 우물가에 도착한 그는 먼저 하나님께 기도했어요.
“...여호와여 원하건대 오늘 나에게 순조롭게 만나게 하사... 내가 우물 곁에 서 있다가 한 소녀에게 이르기를 청하건대 너는 물동이를 기울여 나로 마시게 하라 하리니 그의 대답이 마시라 내가 당신의 낙타에게도 마시게 하리라 하면 그는 주께서 주의 종 이삭을 위하여 정하신 자라” [24:12–14]
기도에 응답한 리브가
기도가 끝나기도 전에 리브가가 나타났고, 그의 행동은 종의 기도와 정확히 일치했습니다. [24:18–19] 종은 조용히 바라보며, 살펴보았습니다 “여호와께서 과연 평탄한 길을 주신 여부를 알고자 하더니” [24:21] 이후 종은 리브가의 집으로 가서 모든 일을 설명했고, 가족은 말했죠. “이 일이 여호와께로 말미암았으니 우리는 가부를 말할 수 없노라” [24:50] 리브가 역시 말했어요. “가겠나이다” [24:58]
저는 이 리브가의 ‘가겠나이다’ 한마디가 꽤 묵직하게 느껴졌어요. 그리고 이 모든 것이 하나님이 두 사람을 배필로 맺어주시는 과정이라고 생각하니 너무 로맨틱해서 설레이기도 했어요.
면박을 가린 리브가
리브가는 가나안으로 향했고, 이삭은 브엘라해로이 근처의 들에서 묵상하다가 그녀를 보았습니다. 그녀는 면박을 가지고 몸을 가렸습니다. [24:65]
종은 모든 일을 설명했고,
“이삭이 리브가를 인도하여 그의 어머니 사라의 장막으로 들이고 그를 맞이하여 아내로 삼고 사랑하였으니 이삭이 그의 어머니를 장례한 후에 위로를 얻었더라” [24:67]
🙏 믿음으로 걷는 여정
이 여정은 한 사람의 기도로 시작되어, 하나님의 손길 아래 차근차근 이어졌어요.
간절한 기도에 하나님은 조용하지만 명확하게 응답하셨고,
리브가는 담대히 떠났고, 이삭은 조용히 기다렸어요.
그렇게 두 사람은 서로를 향해, 하나님을 따라 걸어가고 있었던 거예요.
그리고 리브가는, 자신에게 다가오는 이가 이삭이라는 사실을 들었을 때 면박을 가리고 자신을 감췄어요. 그녀의 행동은 단순한 문화적 예절을 넘어, 하나님 앞에서의 겸손한 태도이고, 새로운 관계 앞에서 조심스럽게 준비하는 마음이었을거예요.
삶의 갈림길 앞에서, 우리도 성경 속 인물들에게서 길을 배울 수 있어요.
기도하며 방향을 구했던 종과 하나님의 부르심에 응답한 리브가,
그리고 묵상하며 조용히 기다린 이삭.
그들의 모습은, 지금 우리에게도 큰 용기를 줍니다.
하나님은 지금도 그분의 뜻을 따라 준비해두신 길 위에서 우리를 기다리십니다.
그 인도하심 앞에서, 우리는 겸손히 마음을 가리고, 믿음으로 걸어갈 수 있기를 바랍니다.
어쩌면 그 길 끝에는, 우리가 상상하지 못한 따뜻한 위로가 준비되어 있을지도 몰라요. 그러니까 여러분, 오늘도 화이팅하기로 해요!
