Abraham makes another mistake, but God remains faithful. From Isaac’s birth to the altar on Mount Moriah, discover the depth of Abraham’s obedience and the meaning of Jehovah Jireh — the Lord will provide.
Abraham’s Faith and Obedience in the Test of Isaac’s Sacrifice
Abraham was a man who had received God’s promise. But even a man of faith is not without mistakes. While staying in the land of Gerar, he once again said that Sarah was his sister. King Abimelek of the Philistines took her into his palace, but God appeared to him in a dream and warned him, “You are as good as dead because of the woman you have taken; she is a married woman.” [20:3]
This incident shows that Abraham was not perfect. Yet God fulfilled His covenant even in human weakness. In the very next scene, God opened Sarah’s womb and gave them the promised son. “The Lord did for Sarah what he had promised.” [21:1] Sarah gave birth to a son to Abraham in his old age. They named him Isaac, meaning “laughter.” “God has brought me laughter, and everyone who hears about this will laugh with me.” [21:6]
But in the midst of that laughter, God called Abraham once again. “Abraham.”
“Here I am.”
“Take your son, your only son, whom you love—Isaac—and go to the region of Moriah. Sacrifice him there as a burnt offering on a mountain I will show you.” [22:2]
Abraham obeyed without a word. On the third day, when they reached the place God had shown, he said, “Stay here with the donkey while I and the boy go over there. We will worship and then we will come back to you.” [22:5]
Isaac carried the wood, and Abraham took the knife and fire. In silence, Isaac cautiously asked, “The fire and wood are here, but where is the lamb for the burnt offering?” [22:7]
“God himself will provide the lamb for the burnt offering, my son.” [22:8]
It was both a confession of faith and the trembling heart of a father.
Abraham built an altar, arranged the wood, and bound Isaac, laying him on the altar. As he reached out his hand to slay his son, a voice called out, “Abraham! Abraham! Do not lay a hand on the boy.” [22:11–12]
He saw a ram caught by its horns in a thicket. Abraham offered the ram instead, and he named that place “The Lord Will Provide.” And to this day it is said, “On the mountain of the Lord it will be provided.” [22:14]
There on that mountain, God said, “Through your offspring all nations on earth will be blessed, because you have obeyed me.” [22:18]
True faith shows not in what we say, but in how we choose to live. Abraham trusted God. Though God stopped Abraham’s hand, He did not withhold His own Son, Jesus Christ, whom He gave for us.
What Abraham experienced as “Jehovah Jireh” was not just a ram in a thicket. It was the declaration that God knows our every need and provides at the perfect time. He is the true Lamb of God, and “The Lord Will Provide” was fulfilled completely on Calvary.
Even when no answer is visible before us, we can still declare:
Even if we can’t see it now, Jehovah Jireh is already at work — preparing what we need before we even ask.

아브라함의 믿음과 순종 – 이삭 번제와 하나님의 시험
[창세기 20–22장]
아브라함은 또 실수했지만 하나님은 여전히 약속을 이루셨습니다. 이삭의 출생부터 번제 사건까지, 하나님의 시험과 준비하심을 따라가며 우리 삶에도 역사하시는 ‘여호와 이레’를 묵상합니다.
아브라함의 믿음으로 이삭 번제의 시험에 순종하다
아브라함은 하나님의 약속을 받은 자였습니다. 그러나 믿음의 사람이라 해도 실수하지 않는 것은 아닙니다. 게랄 땅에 머무를 때, 그는 또다시 아내 사라를 누이라고 말했습니다. 블레셋 왕 아비멜렉은 사라를 궁으로 데려갔고, 하나님께서는 밤중에 그에게 나타나 경고하셨습니다. “...이 여인으로 말미암아 네가 죽으리니 그는 남편이 있는 여자임이라” [20:3]
이 사건은 아브라함이 완벽한 사람이 아님을 보여줍니다. 그러나 하나님은 그 연약함 속에서도 언약을 이루십니다. 그 바로 다음 장면에서, 하나님은 사라의 태를 여시고 약속의 아들을 주십니다. “여호와께서 말씀하신 대로 사라에게 행하셨으므로” [21:1] 사라는 백세 된 아브라함에게 아들을 낳습니다. 그 이름은 이삭, “웃음”이었습니다. “하나님이 나를 웃게 하시니 듣는 자가 다 나와 함께 웃으리로다.” [21:6]
그러나 그 웃음의 한가운데에서, 하나님은 다시 아브라함을 부르십니다. “아브라함아.”
“내가 여기 있습니다.”
“네 아들 네 사랑하는 독자 이삭을 데리고 모리아 땅으로 가서 내가 네게 일러준 한 산 거기서 그를 번제로 드리라” [22:2]
아브라함은 말없이 순종했습니다. 셋째 날, 하나님께서 보여주신 산에 도착했을 때, 그는 말했습니다. “내가 아이와 함께 저기 가서 예배하고 우리가 너희에게로 돌아오리라” [22:5]
이삭은 나무를 지고, 아브라함은 칼과 불을 들었습니다. 침묵 속에서 이삭이 조심스레 물었습니다. “...불과 나무는 있거니와 번제할 어린 양은 어디에 있나이까” [22:7]
“번제할 어린 양은 하나님이 자기를 위하여 친히 준비하시리라” [22:8]
그 말씀은 믿음의 고백이자, 아버지의 떨리는 마음이었습니다.
아브라함은 제단을 쌓고, 나무를 벌려놓고, 이삭을 결박해 제단 위에 눕혔습니다. 그리고 이삭을 향해 손을 들어 칼을 높이 치켜들던 바로 그때, “아브라함아, 아브라함아...그 아이에게 네 손 대지 말라.” [22:11–12]
숫양이 수풀에 뿔이 걸려 있었습니다. 아브라함은 그 숫양을 대신 드렸고, 그곳 이름을 “여호와 이레”라 불렀습니다. 이는 “여호와께서 예비하신다”는 뜻입니다. [22:14]
그 자리에서 하나님은 말씀하셨습니다. “네 씨로 말미암아 천하 만민이 복을 받으리니 이는 네가 나의 말을 준행하였음이니라” [22:18]
믿음은 단지 말이 아니라, 삶 전체로 드러나는 태도입니다. 아브라함은 하나님을 신뢰했습니다. 하나님은 이삭을 바치려는 아브라함의 손을 멈추게 하셨지만, 자신의 아들 예수 그리스도는 우리를 위해 실제로 내어주셨습니다.
아브라함이 경험한 ‘여호와 이레’는 단지 그날 수풀에 걸린 숫양 하나를 의미하지 않았습니다. 그것은 하나님께서 우리의 모든 필요를 아시고, 가장 정확한 때에 예비하신다는 믿음의 이름이었습니다. 그분은 참된 어린양이셨고, “여호와 이레”는 골고다 언덕에서 완전히 이루어졌습니다.
눈앞의 해답이 보이지 않을 때에도, 우리는 말할 수 있습니다.
“여호와 이레, 주님은 준비하고 계십니다.”
