[Genesis 20–22]

Abraham had received God’s promise. But even people of faith make mistakes. When he stayed in Gerar, he once again told others that Sarah was his sister. King Abimelek of the Philistines took Sarah into his palace, but God appeared to him in a dream and warned him: “You are as good as dead because of the woman you have taken; she is a married woman.” [Genesis 20:3]

Shaken, Abimelek confronted Abraham, who confessed in fear. This episode reminded Abraham—and us—that even flawed faith can still walk with God. For right after this, God opened Sarah’s womb and fulfilled His long-awaited promise.

“The Lord did for Sarah what he had promised.” [Genesis 21:1] She gave birth to a son in Abraham’s old age. They named him Isaac, meaning “laughter.” Sarah said, “God has brought me laughter, and everyone who hears about this will laugh with me.” [Genesis 21:6]

Yet amid that joy, God called Abraham again.

“Abraham.”
“Here I am,” he replied. Then came the command that would pierce any heart: “Take your son, your only son, whom you love — Isaac — and go to the region of Moriah. Sacrifice him there as a burnt offering.” [Genesis 22:2]

Abraham obeyed without a word. The next morning, he set off with Isaac and two servants. On the third day, he saw the mountain God had shown him. He told his servants, “Stay here... We will worship and then we will come back to you.” [Genesis 22:5]

He placed the wood on Isaac’s back and carried the fire and knife himself. As they walked together, Isaac broke the silence: “Father... The fire and wood are here, but where is the lamb for the burnt offering?” [Genesis 22:7]

Abraham answered with trembling faith, “God himself will provide the lamb.” [Genesis 22:8] That statement was both a confession of faith and the tremble of a father’s heart.

At the top, Abraham built an altar and laid the wood. He bound Isaac and placed him on the altar. Then, just as he raised the knife toward his son, a voice called out from heaven:

“Abraham! Abraham! Do not lay a hand on the boy... Now I know that you fear God, because you have not withheld from me your son, your only son.” [Genesis 22:11–12]

Abraham looked up and saw a ram caught by its horns in a thicket. He sacrificed the ram instead of Isaac and named that place “Jehovah Jireh” — meaning “The Lord will provide.” [Genesis 22:14]

God reaffirmed His covenant that day: “I will surely bless you... and through your offspring all nations on earth will be blessed, because you have obeyed me.” [Genesis 22:17–18]

Faith is not just a word — it is a posture of life. Abraham trusted God, even when it cost him everything. God stopped his hand from taking Isaac, but God would later give His own Son for us. Jesus became the true Lamb that was provided. “Jehovah Jireh” was fully fulfilled on Calvary.

What Abraham experienced as “Jehovah Jireh” was not just about a ram caught in the thicket that day. It was the name of faith — the belief that God knows our every need and provides at exactly the right time.

“Jehovah Jireh” was fully fulfilled on Calvary. God stopped Abraham’s hand, but later did not withhold His own Son. Through Jesus, the Lord truly provided.

Even when we cannot see the answer in front of us, we can still say:
“Jehovah Jireh — the Lord will provide.”

아브라함은 하나님의 약속을 받은 자였습니다. 그러나 믿음의 사람이라 해도 실수하지 않는 것은 아닙니다. 게랄 땅에 머무를 때, 그는 또다시 아내 사라를 누이라고 말했습니다. 블레셋 왕 아비멜렉은 사라를 궁으로 데려갔고, 하나님께서는 밤중에 그에게 나타나 경고하셨습니다. “...이 여인으로 말미암아 네가 죽으리니 그는 남편이 있는 여자임이라” [창 20:3]

이 사건은 아브라함이 완벽한 사람이 아님을 보여줍니다. 그러나 하나님은 그 연약함 속에서도 언약을 이루십니다. 그 바로 다음 장면에서, 하나님은 사라의 태를 여시고 약속의 아들을 주십니다. “여호와께서 말씀하신 대로 사라에게 행하셨으므로” [창 21:1]

사라는 백세 된 아브라함에게 아들을 낳습니다. 그 이름은 이삭, “웃음”이었습니다. “하나님이 나를 웃게 하시니 듣는 자가 다 나와 함께 웃으리로다.” [창 21:6]

그러나 그 웃음의 한가운데에서, 하나님은 다시 아브라함을 부르십니다.

“아브라함아.”
“내가 여기 있습니다.”
“네 아들 네 사랑하는 독자 이삭을 데리고 모리아 땅으로 가서 내가 네게 일러준 한 산 거기서 그를 번제로 드리라” [창 22:2]

아브라함은 말없이 순종했습니다. 셋째 날, 하나님께서 보여주신 산에 도착했을 때, 그는 말했습니다. “내가 아이와 함께 저기 가서 예배하고 우리가 너희에게로 돌아오리라” [창 22:5]

이삭은 나무를 지고, 아브라함은 칼과 불을 들었습니다. 침묵 속에서 이삭이 조심스레 물었습니다. “...불과 나무는 있거니와 번제할 어린 양은 어디에 있나이까” [창 22:7]

“번제할 어린 양은 하나님이 자기를 위하여 친히 준비하시리라” [창 22:8] 그 말씀은 믿음의 고백이자, 아버지의 떨리는 마음이었습니다.

아브라함은 제단을 쌓고, 나무를 벌려놓고, 이삭을 결박해 제단 위에 눕혔습니다. 그리고 이삭을 향해 손을 들어 칼을 높이 치켜들던 바로 그때, “아브라함아, 아브라함아...그 아이에게 네 손 대지 말라.” [창 22:11–12]

숫양이 수풀에 뿔이 걸려 있었습니다. 아브라함은 그 숫양을 대신 드렸고, 그곳 이름을 “여호와 이레”라 불렀습니다. 이는 “여호와께서 예비하신다”는 뜻입니다. [창 22:14]

하나님은 그 자리에서 말씀하셨습니다. “네 씨로 말미암아 천하 만민이 복을 받으리니 이는 네가 나의 말을 준행하였음이니라” [창 22:18]

믿음은 단지 말이 아니라, 삶 전체로 드러나는 태도입니다. 아브라함은 하나님을 신뢰했습니다. 하나님은 이삭을 바치려는 아브라함의 손을 멈추게 하셨지만, 자신의 아들 예수 그리스도는 우리를 위해 실제로 내어주셨습니다.

아브라함이 경험한 ‘여호와 이레’는 단지 그날 수풀에 걸린 숫양 하나를 의미하지 않았습니다. 그것은 하나님께서 우리의 모든 필요를 아시고, 가장 정확한 때에 예비하신다는 믿음의 이름이었습니다.

그분은 참된 어린양이셨고, “여호와 이레”는 골고다 언덕에서 완전히 이루어졌습니다.

눈앞의 해답이 보이지 않을 때에도, 우리는 말할 수 있습니다. “여호와 이레, 주님은 준비하고 계십니다.”
