The Night Abram Looked Up in Faith – A Covenant of Stars
Abram was returning after rescuing Lot. On that day, he had refused the spoils and confessed that the Lord alone was his reward. But deep inside, there was still an unspoken question. “Do not be afraid, Abram. I am your shield, your very great reward.” [15:1] God came to him first. When Abram opened his heart from the silence, he said, “Sovereign Lord, what can you give me since I remain childless…?”
The one who would inherit his estate was his servant Eliezer—this was his present reality. But God firmly declared, “This man will not be your heir, but a son who is your own flesh and blood will be your heir.” [15:4] Then He took Abram outside and said, “Look up at the sky and count the stars—if indeed you can count them. So shall your offspring be.” [15:5] “Abram believed the Lord, and He credited it to him as righteousness.” [15:6] That night, the stars were many. Though he still had no child, he believed.
God then told Abram to prepare a sacrifice. The animals were cut in two, the sun set, and a deep sleep fell upon him, surrounded by great darkness. In that moment, God revealed the future of his descendants—their suffering, life in a foreign land, and how they would return to possess the land.
When the darkness had fully fallen, a smoking firepot with a blazing torch passed between the pieces. No one else walked there—not even Abram. God alone passed through. It was His declaration that He alone would bear the covenant.
“On that day the Lord made a covenant with Abram and said, ‘To your descendants I give this land, from the Wadi of Egypt to the great river, the Euphrates.’” [15:18] That day, God’s promise was carved into the land with boundaries and the names of nations—it became a concrete reality.
🌿 Reflection – The Path No One Else Walked
There are nights when we look up at the stars. Our hearts are quiet, the reality still feels empty, yet the Word pierces through like a beam of light. Abram was like that. He chose faith over words. With nothing in hand, he trusted God alone. The faithful One walked the covenant path alone. He did not walk it with us. What we must keep is faith; the One who keeps His promise is God. We are still under the night sky. Though the uncountable promises seem far off, faith begins by choosing to look up at the stars tonight.

별을 셀 수 있겠느냐 – 아브라함의 믿음과 하나님의 언약
[창세기 15장]
아브람은 롯을 구하고 돌아오는 길이었습니다. 전리품을 거절하고, 하나님만을 자신의 상급으로 삼겠다고 고백했던 그날. 그러나 그의 마음 깊은 곳엔 여전히 말하지 못한 질문이 있었습니다.
믿음으로 하늘을 올려다본 밤 – 아브람과 별의 언약
아브람은 롯을 구하고 돌아오는 길이었습니다. 전리품을 거절하고, 하나님만을 자신의 상급으로 삼겠다고 고백했던 그날. 그러나 그의 마음 깊은 곳엔 여전히 말하지 못한 질문이 있었습니다. “두려워하지 말라. 나는 네 방패요, 네 지극히 큰 상급이니라.” [15:1] 하나님이 먼저 찾아오셨습니다. 침묵 속에 머물던 마음을 꺼내자, 아브람은 고백합니다. “주 여호와여, 무엇을 내게 주시려 하나이까? 나는 자식이 없사오니…”
상속자가 될 사람은 종 엘리에셀, 그것이 그에게 남은 현실이었습니다. 하지만 하나님은 단호하게 말씀하십니다. “그 사람이 네 상속자가 아니라 네 몸에서 날 자가 네 상속자가 되리라.” [15:4] 그리고 그를 장막 밖으로 이끄셨습니다. 하늘을 가리키며 말씀하십니다. “하늘을 우러러 뭇 별을 셀 수 있나 보라. 네 자손이 이와 같으리라.” [15:5] “아브람이 여호와를 믿으니 여호와께서 이를 그의 의로 여기시고” [15:6] 그 밤, 별은 많았습니다. 자식은 여전히 없었지만, 그는 믿었습니다.
하나님은 아브람에게 제사를 준비하게 하십니다. 짐승이 쪼개지고, 해가 지고, 깊은 잠이 임하고, 짙은 어둠이 그를 둘렀습니다. 그 가운데 하나님이 알려주십니다. 자손들이 겪을 고난, 이방에서의 삶, 그러나 끝내 그들이 돌아와 그 땅을 차지하게 될 것을.
그리고 어둠이 완전히 깔렸을 때, 연기나는 화로와 불붙은 횃불이 쪼갠 고기 사이로 지나갔습니다. 그 누구도 함께 걷지 않았습니다. 아브람도 아니었습니다. 하나님 홀로 지나가셨습니다. 그분 혼자, 언약을 감당하시겠다는 뜻이었습니다.
“그 날에 여호와께서 아브람과 더불어 언약을 세워 이르시되 내가 이 땅을 애굽 강에서부터 그 큰 강 유브라데까지 네 자손에게 주노니” [15:18] 그날, 하나님의 약속은 땅의 경계와 족속의 이름들 위에 구체적인 현실로 새겨졌습니다.
🌿 묵상 – 아무도 걷지 않은 그 길
별을 올려다본 밤이 있습니다. 마음엔 고요가 흐르고, 현실은 여전히 공허하지만, 말씀이 한 줄기 빛처럼 가슴을 지나갑니다. 아브람이 그랬습니다. 그는 말이 아닌 믿음을 선택했습니다. 주어진 것 없이도, 오직 하나님을 신뢰했습니다. 신실하신 분은 그 언약을 혼자 걸으셨습니다. 그 길을 함께 걷지 않으셨습니다. 우리가 지켜야 할 것은 믿음, 지키시는 분은 하나님이십니다. 지금 우리도 여전히 밤하늘 아래 있습니다. 아직 셀 수 없는 약속들은 멀리 있지만, 믿음은 오늘 그 별을 올려다보는 선택입니다.
