The First Possession by Faith – Abraham and the Cave of Machpelah
Sarah died at the age of 127 in Hebron, in the land of Canaan, also known as Kiriath-arba.
Before the death of the wife who had walked with him for many years, Abraham mourned deeply but did not remain in his grief.
Even through tears, he moved forward.
As a sojourner without land to bury his dead, preparing for the funeral became another battle beyond sorrow.
He approached the Hittites and said,
“I am a foreigner and stranger among you. Sell me some property for a burial site here so I can bury my dead.” [23:4]
Surprisingly, the Hittites honored Abraham, saying,
“You are a mighty prince among us. Bury your dead in the choicest of our tombs.”
But Abraham had a specific request in mind. He wanted the cave of Machpelah, which belonged to Ephron and was at the end of his field.
“Let him sell me the cave of Machpelah, which belongs to him and is at the end of his field.
Let him sell it to me for the full price as a burial site among you.” [23:9]
Ephron offered it for free, but Abraham firmly paid four hundred shekels of silver.
To him, a land gained by faith was not a gift of grace but something to be purchased at full price. That was the conviction of his faith.
In the presence of all who had gathered at the city gate, the silver was counted out publicly, and the land became Abraham’s.
He buried Sarah in the cave of Machpelah.
This was not merely the burial of a wife, but the first actual possession of God’s promised land.
The Bible says,
“So Ephron’s field in Machpelah near Mamre—the field and the cave in it, and all the trees within the borders of the field—was deeded to Abraham as his property in the presence of all the Hittites.” [23:17–18]
That cave would later become the tomb of Isaac and Rebekah, and of Jacob and Leah.
From a sojourner who owned not even a handful of soil, Abraham left behind an eternal resting place in a corner of the promised land.
Abraham did not see death merely as a moment of separation.
He did not act as one who owned the land, but as one who believed the promise.
Even in grief, he made a careful decision.
In the land God had promised, he paid four hundred shekels of silver, leaving the first mark of faith.
This was not just a funeral—it was the practice of his faith.
We, too, often find ourselves in places where our hearts feel broken.
But like Abraham, if we choose to act in faith even in this moment,
that quiet and small obedience will become a testimony to the next generation that God is alive.
God does not forget the choices of those who walk by faith, even today.

[창세기 23장]
사라의 죽음 앞에서 아브라함은 깊이 애통하면서도, 약속의 땅에서 그녀를 묻을 장소를 찾아 나섭니다. 헷 족속과의 조용한 거래 속에 담긴 그의 믿음과 결단을 따라가 봅니다.
믿음으로 얻은 첫 소유 – 막벨라 굴의 장례와 약속의 증거
사라는 127세를 일기로 가나안 땅 헤브론, 곧 기럇 아르바에서 세상을 떠났습니다.
오랜 세월 동행했던 아내의 죽음 앞에서, 아브라함은 깊이 애통했지만 오래 머무르지 않았습니다. 그는 눈물 속에서도 움직입니다. 묻을 땅이 없는 나그네였기에, 장례를 준비하는 일은 슬픔을 넘는 또 다른 싸움이었습니다.
그는 헷 족속에게 나아가 말합니다.
“나는 당신들 중에 나그네요 거류하는 자이니 당신들 중에서 내게 매장할 소유지를 주어 내가 나의 죽은 자를 내 앞에서 내어다가 장사하게 하시오” [23:4]
뜻밖에도, 헷 족속은 아브라함을 높이며 말합니다.
“당신은 우리 가운데 있는 하나님의 지도자이니, 우리 묘실 중 좋은 곳에 당신의 죽은 자를 장사하소서.”
하지만 아브라함은 구체적인 요청을 준비해 왔습니다. 그는 막벨라 굴을 원했고, 그것이 밭의 가장자리에 딸려 있는 에브론의 소유임을 알고 있었습니다.
“그가 그의 밭머리에 있는 그의 막벨라 굴을 내게 주도록 하되 충분한 대가를 받고 그 굴을 내게 주어 당신들 중에서 매장할 소유지가 되게 하기를 원하노라” [23:9]
에브론은 그것을 무상으로 주겠다고 하지만, 아브라함은 단호히 은 사백 세겔을 지불합니다.
믿음으로 얻는 땅은 은혜가 아닌 정당한 대가로 사야 한다는 것, 그것이 그의 신앙이었습니다.
결국 은 사백 세겔이 공개적으로 치러졌고, 성문에 모인 모든 사람들 앞에서 그 땅은 아브라함의 것이 됩니다.
그는 사라를 막벨라 굴에 장사합니다.
이것은 단지 아내를 묻는 일이 아니라, 하나님의 약속을 처음으로 ‘소유’한 사건이었습니다.
성경은 말합니다.
“...그 밭과 거기에 속한 굴과 그 밭과 그 주위에 둘린 모든 나무가 성문에 들어온 헷 족속이 보는 데서 아브라함의 소유로 확정된지라” [23:17–18]
그곳은 훗날 이삭과 리브가, 야곱과 레아까지 묻히는 믿음의 무덤이 됩니다.
흙 한 줌 없던 나그네는, 약속의 땅 한 모퉁이에 영원의 자리를 남깁니다.
아브라함은 죽음을 단지 이별로만 받아들이지 않았습니다.
땅을 가진 자가 아니라, 약속을 믿는 자로서 슬픔 속에서도 신중하게 결단했습니다.
하나님께서 주시겠다고 하신 그 땅에, 그는 은 사백 세겔을 지불하며 첫 믿음의 흔적을 남깁니다.
그 행위는 단지 장례 절차가 아니라, 신앙의 실천이었습니다.
우리도 때로는 마음이 꺾이는 자리에 서게 됩니다.
그러나 아브라함처럼, 지금 이 순간에도 믿음을 따라 행동할 수 있다면,
그 작고 조용한 순종은 다음 세대에게 하나님이 살아계심을 증거하는 자리가 될 것입니다.
하나님은 지금도, 믿음으로 걸어가는 자의 결단을 잊지 않으십니다.
