After rescuing Lot, Abram meets Melchizedek, the priest of God Most High. In this moment, Abram chooses faith over reward and honors the God who gave him victory.

Abram and Lot had separated. While Lot chose to live near Sodom, a land that appeared fertile, he soon found himself in danger when war broke out between regional kings.

Four eastern kings joined forces and attacked the five cities of the plain, including Sodom and Gomorrah. Though prosperous on the outside, Sodom was a city full of wickedness in the eyes of God.

The invaders defeated the local kings and carried off their possessions and people—including Lot and his household. Lot’s decision, made with his eyes, had led him far from God’s protection.

When Abram heard of this, he immediately gathered 318 trained men from among those born into his household. These were men who belonged to Abram’s household and were part of his extended family structure.

With this small force, Abram set out under cover of night, chasing the enemy northward. His love for his nephew gave him courage beyond fear, and with a surprise attack, he recovered Lot, his possessions, and all who had been taken.

On the return journey, Abram was met by Melchizedek, king of Salem and priest of God Most High. Melchizedek brought out bread and wine and blessed Abram.

"Blessed be Abram by God Most High, Creator of heaven and earth. And praise be to God Most High, who delivered your enemies into your hand." [Genesis 14:19–20]

Melchizedek’s offering of bread and wine would later remind us of another priestly figure to come. Abram gave him a tenth of everything, acknowledging that the victory came from God alone.

Then the king of Sodom offered Abram to keep the goods for himself. But Abram refused:

"I will accept nothing belonging to you, not even a thread or the strap of a sandal, so that you will never be able to say, ‘I made Abram rich.’" [Genesis 14:23]

Abram turned down riches and reputation in order to honor God. His victory was not only in battle—but in what he refused to take.

The king of Sodom then made Abram an offer: “Keep the goods for yourself, and just return the people.” It was a tempting reward—but Abram refused.

Abram’s response was firm. He would not take even a thread or a sandal strap, declaring that no one but God would receive the credit for his prosperity.

We, too, are faced with tempting offers—money, status, comfort. But like Abram, we are called to seek God’s honor above our own gain. Victory is not only in what we achieve, but in what we surrender.

God is still looking for those who love Him more than they love the world. And to those who choose Him, He confirms His covenant again and again.

전쟁 후의 신앙 – 롯을 구한 아브라함과 멜기세덱의 축복

아브라함과 롯은 서로 다른 길을 택했습니다. 양과 소가 많아진 두 사람은 더 이상 함께 살 수 없었고, 롯은 요단 지역을 택해 소돔 근처로 이동했지요. 하지만 평화로워 보였던 롯의 선택은 예상치 못한 전쟁으로 이어지고 맙니다.

그 당시 가나안에는 여러 왕국들이 있었습니다. 시날 왕, 엘라살 왕, 엘람 왕, 고임 왕이 연합하여 소돔과 고모라를 포함한 다섯 도시와 전쟁을 벌입니다. 소돔은 겉보기엔 번영한 도시였지만, 하나님의 눈에는 죄악이 가득한 땅이었습니다.

전쟁의 결과는 참혹했습니다. 소돔과 고모라는 정복당했고, 많은 재산과 사람들은 포로로 끌려갔습니다. 그 가운데는 롯과 그의 가족도 포함되어 있었지요. 롯은 좋은 땅을 택했지만, 그 땅은 하나님을 떠난 세상의 중심으로 그를 이끌었습니다. 그 선택의 결과는 전쟁과 포로라는 아픔이었습니다.

이 소식을 들은 아브라함은 곧바로 움직였습니다. 아브라함은 그의 가문에 속한 사람들 가운데 훈련된 자 318명을 이끌고, 밤을 뚫고 적을 추격했습니다. 조카 롯을 향한 책임과 사랑은 전쟁의 두려움을 이긴 것입니다.

그는 적들을 기습하여 무찌르고, 롯과 그의 재산, 그리고 함께 잡혀갔던 사람들을 모두 되찾아옵니다.

아브라함이 돌아오던 길에, 살렘 왕 멜기세덱이 그를 맞이합니다. 그는 지극히 높으신 하나님의 제사장이었습니다. 멜기세덱은 떡과 포도주를 가지고 와 아브라함을 축복하며 말합니다. 떡과 포도주는 훗날 또 다른 제사장을 떠올리게 하는 상징이기도 합니다.

“그가 아브람에게 축복하여 이르되 천지의 주재이시요 지극히 높으신 하나님이여 아브람에게 복을 주옵소서” [창세기 14:19]

“...아브람이 그 얻은 것에서 십분의 일을 멜기세덱에게 주었더라” [창세기 14:20]

하나님께서 주신 승리였기에, 아브라함은 그 영광을 사람에게 돌리지 않았습니다.

그때 소돔 왕이 아브라함에게 말합니다. “사람들은 나에게 보내고, 재물은 당신이 가지시오.”

그러나 아브라함은 단호히 거절합니다.

“네 말이 내가 아브람을 치부하게 하였다 할까 하여 네게 속한 것은 실 한 오라기나 들메끈 한 가닥도 내가 가지지 아니하리라” [창세기 14:23]

그는 모든 영광을 하나님께 돌리며, 세상의 유익보다 하나님의 약속을 더 크게 여깁니다.

우리에게도 세상의 제안은 다양한 모습으로 다가옵니다. 보상, 인정, 편리함... 그러나 하나님보다 앞세울 수는 없습니다.

아브라함처럼, 나도 유혹 앞에서 하나님의 이름을 선택할 수 있을까. 하나님은 오늘도, 세상의 영광보다 그분을 더 사랑하는 자를 찾고 계십니다. 그리고 하나님은 그 믿음을 언약으로 확증하십니다.
