After the flood, God remembered Noah and the creatures in the ark. He established a covenant never to destroy the earth with a flood again, sealing it with the sign of the rainbow.

[Genesis 8:1–9:17]

The earth remained covered in water for a long time. But God remembered Noah and all the living creatures inside the ark. "But God remembered Noah and all the wild animals and the livestock that were with him in the ark, and he sent a wind over the earth, and the waters receded." [Genesis 8:1] God closed the springs of the deep and the floodgates of the heavens, and the rain stopped falling. The waters gradually receded, and the ark came to rest on the mountains of Ararat.

Noah released a raven to explore the earth, then a dove, but the dove returned since the ground was not yet dry. After a week, Noah sent the dove again, and it returned with a freshly plucked olive leaf. Hope stirred in Noah's heart. Another week later, he released the dove, and this time it did not return.

Then God spoke to Noah: "Come out of the ark, you and your wife and your sons and their wives. Bring out every kind of living creature that is with you." [Genesis 8:16-17] Noah and his family stepped out of the ark. They began a new life on the earth.

Noah built an altar and offered burnt offerings from clean animals and birds. The Lord smelled the pleasing aroma and said in His heart: "Never again will I curse the ground because of humans, even though every inclination of the human heart is evil from childhood." [Genesis 8:21]

God blessed Noah and his sons, saying: "Be fruitful and increase in number and fill the earth." [Genesis 9:1] Animals would fear them, and all living creatures were given into their hands.

God commanded them not to eat meat that has its lifeblood still in it. He also declared that human life must be respected because man was made in the image of God.

God then established a covenant with Noah, his descendants, and every living creature: "I establish my covenant with you: Never again will all life be destroyed by the waters of a flood." [Genesis 9:11] As a sign of this everlasting covenant, God placed a rainbow in the clouds. Every time the rainbow appears, it reminds us that God remembers His promises.

When we lift our eyes to see the rainbow, we are reminded of God's enduring mercy. In a world that constantly changes, His promises remain unshakable. The rainbow is not just a beautiful sight; it is a whisper from God, assuring us that His love never fails. Even today, we live under His everlasting covenant.

May we live as those who remember His covenant and reflect His mercy.

세상이 물에 덮인 지 오래, 하나님께서는 노아와 방주 안에 있던 모든 생물들을 기억하셨습니다. "하나님이 노아와 그와 함께 방주에 있는 모든 들짐승과 가축을 기억하사 하나님이 바람을 땅 위에 불게 하시매 물이 줄어들었고" [창세기 8:1] 하나님은 깊음의 샘과 하늘의 창을 닫으시고 비를 그치게 하셨습니다. 물은 점점 줄어들었고, 방주는 아라랏 산에 머물렀습니다.

노아는 까마귀를 내보내어 물이 얼마나 빠졌는지 살폈습니다. 비둘기를 내보냈지만, 땅이 마르지 않아 비둘기는 돌아왔습니다. 일주일 후 다시 내보낸 비둘기는 감람나무 잎사귀를 물고 돌아왔습니다. 노아는 땅이 생명을 되찾고 있다는 것을 느꼈습니다. 다시 일주일을 기다려 비둘기를 내보냈을 때, 비둘기는 돌아오지 않았습니다.

그때 하나님께서 말씀하셨습니다. "너는 네 아내와 네 아들들과 네 며느리들과 함께 방주에서 나오고 너와 함께한 모든 혈육 있는 생물 곧 새와 가축과 땅에 기는 모든 것을 다 이끌어내라..." [창세기 8:16-17] 노아와 가족은 방주에서 나왔습니다. 그들은 땅을 밟으며 새로운 세상을 시작했습니다.

노아는 제단을 쌓고, 정결한 짐승과 새를 번제로 드렸습니다. 그 향기를 기쁘게 받으신 하나님께서는 마음에 다짐하셨습니다. "...내가 다시는 사람으로 말미암아 땅을 저주하지 아니하리니 이는 사람의 마음이 계획하는 바가 어려서부터 악함이라..." [창세기 8:21]

하나님은 노아와 그의 아들들에게 복을 주셨습니다. "...생육하고 번성하여 땅에 충만하라." [창세기 9:1] 모든 동물들은 사람을 두려워하게 되었고, 살아 있는 모든 것은 사람에게 주어졌습니다.

그러나 하나님은 생명의 피를 먹지 말라 명령하셨습니다. 사람의 생명을 빼앗는 자는 반드시 그의 생명으로 갚아야 한다고 하셨습니다. 사람이 하나님의 형상대로 지음 받았기 때문입니다.

하나님은 노아와 그의 후손, 그리고 모든 생물과 언약을 세우셨습니다. "내가 너희와 언약을 세우리니, 다시는 모든 생물을 홍수로 멸하지 아니할 것이라..." [창세기 9:11] 하나님은 무지개를 구름 사이에 두어 그 언약의 표로 삼으셨습니다. 무지개가 나타날 때마다 하나님은 그 언약을 기억하시겠다고 약속하셨습니다.

하늘에 걸린 무지개는 지금도 우리를 멈춰 세웁니다. 그 무지개는 하나님께서 우리를 기억하시고, 사랑하신다는 증거입니다. 세상은 변하고, 우리의 믿음은 약해질 때도 있지만, 하나님은 한 번 세우신 약속을 결코 잊지 않으십니다. 우리가 무지개를 바라볼 때마다, 그분의 신실한 사랑을 다시 마음에 새기게 됩니다. 그리고 그 약속 안에서, 오늘도 다시 희망을 품게 됩니다.

하나님의 언약을 기억하고, 그 자비를 삶으로 비추는 자로 살아가기를 소망합니다.
