Noah’s Shame and the Choice of Shem and Ham
After the flood ended, Noah and his three sons—Shem, Ham, and Japheth—left the ark and ventured into a new world. They spread out across the land and became the ancestors of all humanity. As time passed, Noah planted a vineyard and made wine from its fruit.
Though Noah was a righteous man who walked closely with God, he made a mistake by becoming drunk and exposing himself inside his tent. "He drank of the wine and became drunk and lay uncovered in his tent." [9:21] Noah, the faithful builder of the ark, was still a fragile human being.
At that moment, Ham, the father of Canaan, saw his father’s nakedness and went outside to tell his two brothers. "Ham, the father of Canaan, saw the nakedness of his father and told his two brothers outside." [9:22] Instead of covering his father’s shame, Ham chose to reveal it.
But Shem and Japheth took a garment, placed it on their shoulders, and walked backward into the tent to cover their father’s nakedness. "Then Shem and Japheth took a garment, laid it on both their shoulders, and walked backward and covered the nakedness of their father. Their faces were turned away, and they did not see their father’s nakedness." [9:23] With respect and love, they shielded their father’s shame.
When Noah awoke and realized what had happened, he pronounced a curse on Canaan, the son of Ham. "Cursed be Canaan; a servant of servants shall he be to his brothers." [9:25] In contrast, he blessed Shem and Japheth.
Those who exposed shame faced judgment, while those who covered shame received blessings.
Noah lived another 350 years, reaching a total age of 950 years. Though a man of great faith, he remained dependent on God’s grace until the very end.
Even those of us who have walked the path of faith for a long time can still stumble. Yet God loves us unconditionally and lifts us up whenever we fall. In our failures, God works with both justice and grace.
Today, when we see the faults of others, can we choose to cover them with love?
Like Shem and Japheth, may God’s grace shine through our attitude toward the brokenness and shame of others.

수치를 가린 자 – 노아의 마지막 시험
[창세기 9:18–29]
홍수가 끝난 후, 노아는 마지막 시험을 맞이했습니다. 노아의 아들들 사이에서 펼쳐진 명예와 수치의 이야기와, 그 속에서 드러난 하나님의 공의와 은혜를 살펴보세요.
노아의 수치와 셈과 함의 선택
홍수가 끝난 후, 방주에서 나온 노아와 그의 세 아들, 셈과 함과 야벳은 새로운 세상으로 나아갔습니다. 그들은 땅에 퍼져 인류의 조상이 될 사람들이었습니다. 오랜 시간이 흐른 뒤, 노아는 포도나무를 심고, 그 열매로 포도주를 만들어 마셨습니다.
하나님과 동행했던 의로운 노아도, 포도주에 취해 자신의 장막 안에서 하체를 드러내는 실수를 범했습니다. "포도주를 마시고 취하여 그 장막 안에서 벌거벗은지라" [9:21] 노아는 구원의 방주를 만든 믿음의 사람이었지만, 여전히 연약한 인간이었습니다.
그때 그의 아들 함이 아버지의 하체를 보고, 밖으로 나가 두 형제에게 알렸습니다. "가나안의 아버지 함이 그의 아버지의 하체를 보고 밖으로 나가서 그의 두 형제에게 알리매" [9:22] 함은 아버지의 수치를 덮지 않고 드러내는 길을 택했습니다.
하지만 셈과 야벳은 옷을 가져다가 어깨에 걸치고, 얼굴을 뒤로 돌린 채 뒷걸음질하여 아버지의 하체를 덮었습니다. "셈과 야벳이 옷을 가져다가 자기들의 어깨에 메고 뒷걸음쳐 들어가서 그들의 아버지의 하체를 덮었으며 그들이 얼굴을 돌이키고 그들의 아버지의 하체를 보지 아니하였더라" [9:23] 그들은 존중과 사랑으로 아버지의 수치를 가려드렸습니다.
노아는 깨어나 자신에게 일어난 일을 알고, 함의 자손 가나안에게 저주를 선언했습니다. "이에 이르되 가나안은 저주를 받아 그의 형제의 종들의 종이 되기를 원하노라..." [9:25] 반면, 셈과 야벳에게는 축복을 선언했습니다.
수치를 드러낸 자는 심판을 받았고, 수치를 가린 자는 복을 받았습니다.
노아는 이후 350년을 더 살며 총 950세를 채웠습니다. 그는 위대한 믿음의 사람이었지만, 끝까지 하나님의 은혜 없이는 살 수 없는 존재였습니다.
우리 역시, 오래 믿음의 길을 걸어왔다 해도 여전히 넘어질 수 있습니다. 그러나 하나님은 그런 우리를 끝까지 사랑하시며, 넘어질 때마다 다시 일으켜 세워주십니다. 하나님은 우리의 실수 속에서도 공의와 은혜로 일하십니다. 오늘, 우리는 다른 사람의 허물을 만났을 때, 사랑으로 덮어줄 수 있을까요?
셈과 야벳처럼, 타인의 깨어짐(수치)을 대하는 우리의 태도 속에 하나님의 은혜가 드러나길 바랍니다.
