Sometimes, long genealogies in Scripture seem to interrupt the story. Genesis 36 feels like one of those chapters. But even in this list of names, we find God’s faithfulness—this time, not to Jacob, but to Esau. Though not the chosen line, Esau became the father of a nation called Edom. Let’s reflect on what his genealogy tells us.
Esau’s Line and the Rise of Edom – Genesis 36
Esau’s Genealogy
Just as Jacob’s story deepens, the Bible shifts focus to Esau’s descendants. This isn’t a random insertion. Esau didn’t receive the covenant blessing, but God didn’t forget him. His lineage stands as a sign that God kept His word to Esau, too.
How Esau Became a Nation
After parting ways with Jacob, Esau settled in the hill country of Seir—a land already occupied by the Horites. Through intermarriage and growing influence, Esau’s family established roots and became the nation of Edom. As Genesis 36:8 says,
“So Esau settled in the hill country of Seir. Esau is Edom.”
His name became more than a man—it became a people.
Edom Had Kings Before Israel
One surprising detail stands out: Edom had kings long before Israel did.
“These were the kings who reigned in Edom before any Israelite king reigned.” [Genesis 36:31]
While Jacob’s family still lived in tents, Esau’s descendants had already settled and raised up leaders. It’s a reminder that God’s timeline doesn’t always follow human expectations.
Edom Was an Enemy, But Still Family
Later in the Bible, Edom would often oppose Israel. They blocked the way during the wilderness journey, clashed with David and Solomon, and were eventually judged by the prophets. But it’s important to remember—they weren’t outsiders. They were family. The blood of Abraham ran through Esau’s line.
God Remembered Esau Too
Scripture doesn’t rank the brothers. Instead, it gently shows us that God remembered both. Esau’s children—name by name—are recorded in the Bible. His life wasn’t discarded. His story wasn’t erased. God led him, too.
When You Feel Forgotten
Sometimes, we don’t feel like Jacob—the chosen one, the blessed one. I’ve felt that way more than once. Like someone left out, standing on the edges of grace. But honestly, does that mean we’re forgotten? God didn’t erase Esau. He included every one of his children by name.
Even when our lives feel ordinary and unseen, God still sees us. Like Esau, we might not be in the center—but we’re still within His plan. I believe we can be used, and that our journey still fits into God’s greater story.

에서의 족보와 에돔 족속
[창세기 36장]
성경을 읽다 보면, 갑자기 긴 족보가 갑자기 등장해서 흐름이 끊기는 듯한 느낌을 줄 때가 있어요. 이번 36장도 그런 장 중에 하나인 것 같아요. 36장은 긴 족보로 이루어져 있지만, 장자의 축복을 빼앗긴 야곱의 삶도 잊지 않으시고 인도해주셨다는 메시지를 담고 있어요. 야곱처럼 선택된 계보는 아니지만, 에돔이라는 민족을 이룬 에서의 족보를 함께 볼게요.
형 에서의 후손도 민족이 되다
에서의 족보
성경은 야곱의 이야기가 깊어지던 중에, 에서의 자손 이야기를 등장시켜요. 하지만, 이 장은 끼워 넣은 페이지는 아닐 거예요. 에서는 하나님의 축복은 받지 못했지만, 하나님은 그를 잊지 않으셨어요. 그의 족보가 하나님이 에서에게도 약속을 지키셨다는 증거일 테니까요.
에서는 어떻게 민족이 되었을까
에서는 야곱과 헤어진 뒤, 세일 산으로 향했습니다. 이 땅은 이미 세일 족속이 살고 있던 곳이지만, 에서는 그들과 혼인하고 정착하면서 영향력을 키워갔어요. 마침내 그는 에돔이라는 이름의 민족을 이루게 되죠. 성경은 36장 8절에서 이렇게 기록했어요.
“에서 곧 에돔이 세일 산에 거주하니라”
그의 이름은 한 사람의 이름을 넘어 민족의 이름이 되었습니다.
에돔, 이스라엘보다 먼저 왕을 세우다
놀라운 점이 있어요. 바로 에돔이 이스라엘보다 먼저 왕국을 이루었다는 사실이에요.
“이스라엘 자손을 다스리는 왕이 있기 전에 에돔 땅을 다스리던 왕들이 이러하니라” [36:31]
야곱의 후손들은 여전히 장막에서 유목생활을 이어가고 있지만, 에서의 후손들은 일찍이 정착하고 왕을 세웠습니다. 하나님의 시간표는 사람이 생각하는 순서와는 다르게 흘러갈 수 있음을 보여주는 것 같아요.
에돔은 적국이었지만, 형제의 후손이었다
훗날 에돔은 이스라엘과 자주 대립하게 되죠. 광야 여정에서는 길을 막았고, 다윗과 솔로몬 시대에는 주변 민족으로 등장하기도 해요. 예언서에서는 안타깝게도 심판의 대상이 되기도 합니다. 그러나 우리가 기억해야 할 것은, 에돔이 외부의 민족이 아니라는 점이에요. 그들은 아브라함의 피를 함께 나눠가진, 형의 후손이었습니다.
하나님은 에서도 기억하셨다
성경은 한 배에서 난 두 형제를 평가하지 않으셨어요. 대신 조용히 보여주셨어요. 하나님은 야곱뿐만 아니라, 에서도 기억하셨고, 그의 후손 하나하나의 이름을 성경에 기록하셨어요. 버려지지 않았던 인생, 외면당하지 않은 계보. 하나님은 에서의 삶도 인도하셨습니다.
그럼에도 기억하시는 주님
우리는 때때로 ‘야곱’이 아닌 것처럼 느껴질 수 있어요. 저는 수시로 그런 생각에 사로잡혀 살았었죠. 하나님의 축복 밖에 있는 사람처럼, 세상의 중심에서 밀려난 사람처럼 말이지요. 하지만 그러면 좀 어떤가요? 하나님은 에서의 이름을 성경에서 지우지 않으시고 그 후손들까지 하나하나 기록하셨어요.
우리가 조명받지 못하는 자리에서 평범하게 살아가고 있을지라도, 하나님은 기억하실 거예요. 에서처럼 중심이 아니어도, 선택된 계보가 아니어도, 하나님의 계획 안에서는 저는 쓰임 받을 수 있고, 하나님의 목적 있는 흐름 속에 있다고 생각해요.
