Genesis 38 suddenly shifts focus from Joseph to Judah's personal story. At first glance, it feels like an interruption—but surprisingly, this chapter reveals the flow of God’s covenant lineage.
A father-in-law avoiding responsibility, a forgotten daughter-in-law, and the birth of Perez in the middle of it all. What looks like a shocking family tragedy turns out to be part of the genealogy leading to Jesus.
Today, let’s reflect on how God carried His promise forward through Tamar.
Judah’s Daughter-in-law Tamar
After Joseph was sold into Egypt, the Bible records Judah’s personal story. He married a Canaanite woman and had three sons: Er, Onan, and Shelah. He found Tamar as a wife for his firstborn, Er.
But Er was wicked in the eyes of the Lord and was put to death. Judah then asked his second son Onan to fulfill the duty of producing offspring for his brother through Tamar—a custom that was normal in those days.
“But Onan knew that the child would not be his. So whenever he slept with his brother’s wife, he spilled his semen on the ground to keep from providing offspring for his brother. What he did was wicked in the Lord’s sight; so the Lord put him to death also.” [Genesis 38:9–10]
Judah then told Tamar to return to her father's home until Shelah was old enough to marry. But later, in verse 14, the Bible says, “Shelah had grown up, but Judah had not given him to her as a husband.”
Tamar was forgotten, left out of the promise she had been given.
Judah and Her Choice
As time passed and Judah broke his promise, Tamar made a choice.
She covered her face with a veil and sat where Judah would pass by. She tricked him into sleeping with her and took his seal, cord, and staff as collateral.
“Your seal and its cord, and the staff in your hand,” she said. [Genesis 38:18]
Three months later, when her pregnancy was discovered, Judah was enraged and said, “Bring her out and burn her!” [Genesis 38:24]
But Tamar calmly presented the items and said, “I am pregnant by the man who owns these.” [Genesis 38:25]
Then Judah realized the truth and declared, “She is more righteous than I.” [Genesis 38:26]
That confession wasn’t merely from shame—it was an acknowledgment that Tamar acted more faithfully than he did in preserving the family line.
Perez’s Lineage
Tamar gave birth to twins. The first to reach out his hand was Zerah, but he pulled it back, and then Perez was born.
“How did you break out?” they asked. So he was named Perez. [Genesis 38:29]
Perez later became an ancestor of King David—and eventually of Jesus Christ Himself. Amazing, right? What looked like a strange and tragic event turned out to be part of the Messiah’s story.
“Judah was the father of Perez and Zerah by Tamar, Perez the father of Hezron…” [Matthew 1:3]
Tamar, once overlooked, became the vessel of God’s covenant.
Even amid human failure and neglect, God’s redemptive plan never stopped unfolding.
Closing
God continued His story through someone forgotten.
Though Tamar was rejected and silenced, her name was remembered and honored in the lineage of God’s promise.
We, too, may find ourselves waiting quietly in places where no one sees us. But God sees, God knows, and God writes stories through people who trust and take responsibility.
Perhaps being part of His lineage doesn’t require greatness—only faithfulness.
May you and I both become a small but meaningful part of His ongoing story.

📘 창세기 38장 – 유다의 며느리 다말, 그녀의 선택, 베레스의 계보
성경 창세기 38장은 요셉의 이야기 사이에 갑자기 등장하는 유다의 가정사예요. 처음엔 왜 이런 이야기가 여기 들어왔는지 의아했지만, 놀랍게도 이 안에는 하나님의 계보가 흐르고 있었어요.
책임을 회피한 시아버지 유다, 잊혀진 며느리 다말, 그리고 그 사이에서 태어나는 베레스. 충격적인 전개로 우리를 놀라게 한 이 사건은 단순한 가정의 비극이 아니라, 예수님의 계보로 이어지는 이야기의 일부였던 거죠.
오늘 우리는 다말을 통해 언약의 계보가 어떻게 이어졌는지를 살펴보려 해요.
유다의 며느리 다말
요셉이 이집트로 팔려간 후, 성경은 유다의 개인적인 이야기를 기록해요. 유다는 가나안 여인과 결혼해서 엘, 오난, 셀라 세 아들을 낳았어요. 유다는 장남, 엘을 위해 다말을 데리고 와요.
하지만 장남 엘은 여호와가 보시기에 악하여 죽임을 당하고, 유다는 둘째 오난에게 형수인 다말을 통해 형의 계보를 잇게 해요. 다소 놀라운 문화이지만, 당시에는 자연스러운 전통이었다고 해요.
“오난이 그 씨가 자기 것이 되지 않을 줄을 알므로 형수에게 들어갔을 때에 형에게 씨를 주지 아니하려고 땅에 설정하매 그 일이 여호와 보시기에 악하므로 여호와께서 그도 죽이시니라” [38:9–10] 하지만, 둘째인 오난도 죽게 되요.
그 후 유다는 셋째 아들 셀라가 자라면 다말을 다시 아내로 맞이하게 하겠다고 말하며 그녀를 친정으로 돌려보내죠. 하지만 성경은 창세기 38장 14절에서 이렇게 말해요. “셀라가 장성하였으나 그를 아내로 주지 아니하였음이라”
그렇게 다말은 약속에서 잊혀진 존재가 되고 말죠.
유다와 그녀의 선택
시간이 지나도 유다는 약속을 지키지 않았어요. 다말은 더 이상 기다리지 않고 행동하기로 선택해요.
얼굴을 베일로 가리고 유다가 지나갈 길목에 앉은 그녀는, 유다를 속여서 동침해요. 그리고 담보로 유다의 인장과 지팡이를 받아두어요. “당신의 인장과 그 끈과 당신의 손에 있는 지팡이로 하라…” [38:18]
세 달 후 다말의 임신 소식이 전해지자, 유다는 분노하며 말해요. “그를 끌어내어 불사르라” [38:24]
하지만 다말은 담담하게 담보물을 내보이며 말해요. “이 물건 임자로 말미암아 내가 잉태하였나이다” [38:25]
그제야 유다는 모든 상황을 깨닫고 고백하죠. “그는 나보다 옳도다” [38:26]
그 고백은 단지 부끄러움 때문만은 아니었어요. 다말이 계보를 잇기 위해 자신보다 더 신실하게 행동했다는 것을 인정한 것이었죠.
베레스의 계보
그렇게 다말은 쌍둥이를 낳습니다. 먼저 손을 내밀었다가 들어간 아이는 세라, 그 다음에 나온 아이는 베레스였죠.
“네가 어찌하여 터뜨리고 나오느냐 하였으므로 그의 이름을 베레스라 불렀더라” [38:29]
이 베레스는 훗날 다윗 왕의 조상이 되고, 더 나아가 예수 그리스도의 계보로 이어지게 되요. 놀랍죠? 그저 한 가정의 어이없는 사건인 줄 알았는데 예수님이 탄생하다니요!
“유다는 다말에게서 베레스와 세라를 낳고, 베레스는 헤스론을 낳고…” [마태복음 1:3]
아무도 주목하지 않았던 다말은 하나님의 언약을 이어가는 통로가 되었고, 하나님은 인간의 실수와 외면 속에서도 구속의 역사를 계속 이어가셨어요.
마무리
하나님은 잊혀진 사람을 통해서도 역사를 이어가셨어요.
다말은 외면당했고 침묵을 강요받았지만, 결국 하나님의 언약 속에 이름을 남기고 기록되었죠.
우리는 때로 인정받지 못하는 자리에서 묵묵히 기다리지만, 하나님은 그 자리를 알고 계시고 보시고 계십니다. 계보에 이름이 오르는 사람은, 위대한 사람이 아니라 하나님의 뜻에 순종하며 책임을 감당하는 사람이 아닐까요?
저도, 그리고 여러분도 하나님의 역사 속 한 줄이 될 수 있어요.
