Joseph was sold by his brothers and brought to Egypt, where he gained trust in Potiphar’s house. But he was falsely accused and thrown into prison. Even so, we see that this suffering, too, was held within God’s greater plan.
Temptation, Injustice, and the Presence of God
1. Favor in Potiphar’s House
Betrayed and sold by his brothers, Joseph ended up serving in the house of Potiphar, an official of Pharaoh. God must have led him there. Joseph worked faithfully and gradually earned his master's trust.
"The Lord was with Joseph so that he prospered... Potiphar put him in charge of his household, and he entrusted to his care everything he owned." [39:2–4]
2. Temptation and False Accusation
One day, Potiphar’s wife tried to seduce Joseph, but he firmly refused.
"How then could I do such a wicked thing and sin against God?" [39:9]
Though innocent, Joseph was imprisoned. Yet even there, God stayed with him.
"The Lord was with him; he showed him kindness and granted him favor in the eyes of the prison warden." [39:21]
Joseph was eventually put in charge of everything in the prison. "The warden paid no attention to anything under Joseph’s care, because the Lord was with Joseph and gave him success in whatever he did." [39:23]
3. Joseph Interprets Dreams, But Is Forgotten
Later, Pharaoh’s chief cupbearer and chief baker were also imprisoned. Each had a troubling dream, but no one could interpret them. Joseph said,
"Do not interpretations belong to God? Tell me your dreams." [40:8]
He explained that the cupbearer would be restored, while the baker would be executed. Joseph then pleaded with the cupbearer:
"But when all goes well with you, remember me and show me kindness... get me out of this prison." [40:14]
But the man forgot. "The chief cupbearer, however, did not remember Joseph; he forgot him." [40:23]
🙏 Reflection – Even When Forgotten, God Remains With Us
Joseph honored God even in the face of temptation, and he acknowledged that interpretations came from God, not himself. In the middle of injustice, his heart remained anchored in trust, and he quietly stayed where God had placed him.
We, too, go through times that don’t make sense. But even in those moments, God is still with us. When nothing seems to happen, and we feel forgotten, God's response may already be growing—quietly, patiently, in the background.

From Prisoner to Prime Minister – God's Plan [Genesis 41]
감옥에서 잊혀진 요셉, 하나님은 기억하셨다 [창세기 39–40]
형들에게 팔려서 이집트에 도착한 요셉은, 보디발의 집에서 신뢰를 얻게 되지만 뜻밖의 유혹과 억울한 누명을 쓰게 돼요. 그 일로 감옥에 갇히게 되는 고난을 겪지만, 그 역시 하나님의 계획 안에 있었다고 생각해요.
유혹과 억울함 속에서도 – 함께하신 하나님
1. 보디발의 집에서 받은 은혜
형제들에게 배신당해 팔려간 요셉은, 바로의 신하 보디발의 집에 머물게 되었습니다. 하나님이 인도하셨을 거예요. 그곳에서 성실히 일하며 점차 신뢰를 얻게 되죠.
“여호와께서 요셉과 함께 하시므로 그가 형통한 자가 되어... 요셉이 그의 주인에게 은혜를 입어 섬기매 그가 요셉을 가정 총무로 삼고 자기의 소유를 다 그의 손에 위탁하니” [39:2–4]
2. 유혹과 억울한 감옥살이
그러던 어느 날 보디발의 아내는 요셉을 유혹합니다. 요셉은 단호히 거절했어요.
“...내가 어찌 이 큰 악을 행하여 하나님께 죄를 지으리이까” [39:9]
이 일로 요셉은 누명을 쓰고 감옥에 갇히게 되죠. 하지만 그곳에서도 하나님은 여전히 함께하셨어요.
“여호와께서 요셉과 함께 하시고... 간수장에게 은혜를 받게 하시매” [39:21]
감옥 안에서도 요셉은 모든 일을 맡게 되었고, “간수장은...여호와께서 요셉과 함께 하심이라...” [39:23]라고 말합니다.
3. 꿈을 해석한 요셉, 그러나 잊혀지다
얼마 뒤에 바로의 술 맡은 관원장과 떡 굽는 관원장이 함께 갇히게 됩니다. 그들은 각기 다른 꿈을 꾸지만 해석할 자가 없어 괴로워했죠. 요셉은 이렇게 말합니다.
“...해석은 하나님께 있지 아니하니이까 청하건대 내게 이르소서” [40:8]
요셉은 두 사람의 꿈을 해석하며, 술 맡은 관원장에게는 복직을, 떡 굽는 관원장에게는 죽음을 예언합니다. 복직할 관원장에게는 간절히 부탁했어요.
“당신이 잘 되시거든 나를 생각하고... 이 집에서 나를 건져주소서” [40:14]
하지만 그는 요셉을 기억하지 못하고 잊고 말죠.
“술 맡은 관원장이 요셉을 기억하지 못하고 그를 잊었더라” [40:23]
🙏 묵상 – 기억되지 않아도, 하나님은 우리와 함께하신다
요셉은 유혹 앞에서도 하나님이 지켜보시는 듯 행동했고, 감옥에서도 꿈 해석이 본인이 아니라 하나님께 속한다고 고백했습니다. 억울한 상황 속에서도 요셉의 마음에는 늘 하나님을 향한 신뢰가 있었고, 그는 묵묵히 그 자리를 지켰습니다.
우리도 삶에서 이해되지 않는 시간이 지날 수 있어요. 하지만 그때마저도 하나님은 우리와 함께하세요. 이해되지 않는 시간도 하나님이 허락하셨기에 이루어진 거겠죠. 때로는 아무 일도 일어나지 않는 것처럼 보이는 순간조차, 우리가 잊혀졌다고 느끼는 그 순간조차도, 하나님의 응답은 조용히 자라고 있을 거예요.
