The beginning of the famine started with the memory of one man—Joseph. Left in prison, Joseph finally stood before Pharaoh and, with God’s wisdom, interpreted the king’s dreams. Let’s walk through this story of how Joseph was raised in God’s plan through suffering.
Interpreting Pharaoh’s Dreams with God’s Wisdom
Joseph Left in Prison and Remembered by God
Previously, Joseph was falsely accused and imprisoned. He interpreted the dream of Pharaoh’s cupbearer and asked him to remember him after being restored to his position. But the cupbearer forgot him. Two years passed, and Joseph remained in that place.
Joseph Stands Before Pharaoh
One day, Pharaoh had two strange dreams: fat cows swallowed by thin ones, and full heads of grain consumed by withered ones. No one could interpret them, and the cupbearer finally remembered Joseph. Joseph shaved, changed his clothes, and stood before the king. He said, as in Genesis 41:16, “I cannot do it, but God will give Pharaoh the answer he desires.”
Joseph Becomes Prime Minister by God’s Wisdom
Joseph explained that the two dreams had the same meaning: seven years of abundance would be followed by seven years of severe famine. He advised Pharaoh to appoint someone wise to gather grain during the good years and prepare for the hard times.
Pharaoh was amazed and said, as in Genesis 41:38, “Can we find anyone like this man, one in whom is the spirit of God?”
Quiet Preparation After Becoming Prime Minister
That day, Joseph was made prime minister of Egypt. He received Pharaoh’s signet ring and governed the land. He gathered grain, filled storehouses, and worked to protect the lives of the people.
Joseph had two sons, Manasseh (meaning “God has made me forget”) and Ephraim (meaning “God has made me fruitful”). He confessed, as in Genesis 41:51–52, “God has made me forget all my trouble and all my father’s household” and “God has made me fruitful in the land of my suffering.” His life changed completely—but it all began in the silent years of prison.
God’s Plan and Joseph’s Journey
We often say that hardship is a “blessing in disguise.” It sounds good, but in the midst of trials, it rarely feels that way. Only when the trial ends do we realize that every step was part of God’s perfect timetable.
Joseph did not waste the years of abundance. While others celebrated, he quietly prepared for the famine. His choices reflected not just wisdom, but his faithfulness to the mission God had given him.
Even if I don’t understand where I stand now, I believe that God will lead me in His time and His way. Joseph’s life seems to be proof of that.
Lord, help me trust that even this season is part of Your perfect plan.

하나님의 지혜로 바로의 꿈을 해석하다
감옥에 남겨진 요셉과 하나님의 기억
지난 이야기에서 요셉은 억울한 누명을 쓰고 감옥에 갇혔죠. 바로의 신하인 술 맡은 관원장의 꿈을 해석해 주고, 복직하면 자신을 구제해주길 부탁했지만 그는 요셉을 잊고 말았습니다. 어느덧 2년이 흘렀고, 요셉은 여전히 그곳에 남아 있었죠.
바로의 꿈 앞에 선 요셉
그러던 어느 날, 바로가 이상한 꿈을 두 번 꾸게 됩니다. 살찐 소와 파리한 소, 무성한 이삭과 마른 이삭—그 누구도 그 꿈을 해석해주지 못하자, 술 맡은 관원장이 비로소 요셉을 기억해내죠. 요셉은 면도하고 옷을 갈아입고 왕 앞에 섭니다. 그리고 41장 16절과 같이 말하죠. “...내가 아니라, 하나님께서 바로에게 편안한 대답을 하시리이다.”
하나님의 지혜로 총리가 된 요셉
요셉은 두 꿈이 같은 뜻이고, 장차 일곱 해의 풍년과 그 후 일곱 해의 흉년이 이집트에 닥칠 거라고 설명해줍니다. 그리고 그에 대한 구체적인 대책을 제안하죠. 풍년 동안 곡식을 모아 흉년을 대비할 사람을 세우라고 말합니다.
바로는 놀라서 41장 38절처럼 말해요. “...하나님의 영에 감동된 사람을 우리가 어찌 찾을 수 있으리요”
총리가 된 후의 묵묵한 준비
그날, 요셉은 이집트의 총리가 됩니다. 왕의 인장을 받고, 가장 높은 자리에 올라 나라를 다스리는 자가 되었죠. 그는 곡식을 모으고 창고를 채우며, 백성의 생명을 지키는 사명을 감당합니다.
그는 두 아들을 낳아요. 이름은 므낫세(잊게 하심), 에브라임(번성하게 하심)이에요. 요셉은 41장 51절과 52절에서 이렇게 고백합니다. “...하나님이 내게 내 모든 고난과 내 아버지의 온 집 일을 잊어버리게 하셨다” “...하나님이 나를 내가 수고한 땅에서 번성하게 하셨다” 요셉의 인생은 이제 완전히 바뀌었습니다. 그러나 그 모든 시작은 감옥에서 조용히 흘러간 시간 속에서 비롯되었습니다.
하나님의 계획과 요셉의 시간표
우리는 종종 고난이 ‘변장된 축복’이라는 말을 해요. 들을 땐 그럴듯하지만, 고난 속에 있을 때는 그 말을 실감하지 못하죠. 그러나 고난이 끝난 후에야 비로소 우리는 알게 돼요. 그 모든 과정이 하나님의 완벽한 시간표 안에 있었다는 것을 말이에요.
요셉은 풍년의 해에 흥청거리기보다, 오히려 기근을 준비했어요. 누구도 위기를 느끼지 못할 때, 그는 묵묵히 창고를 채워갔습니다. 그의 선택은 단지 지혜가 아니라, 하나님이 맡기신 사명을 따르는 태도였던 것 같아요.
지금 내가 서 있는 이 자리가 이해되지 않을 수 있어요. 그렇지만 하나님은 하나님의 때에, 하나님의 방법으로 나를 이끄십니다. 요셉의 삶이 그 증거가 되는 듯이 말이에요. 오늘도 나의 시간표 위에 하나님의 손길이 있다는 것을 믿게 하소서.
