In the previous story, Joseph interpreted Pharaoh’s dreams with the wisdom God gave him.
He became the governor of Egypt and prepared the nation for seven years of abundance and seven years of famine.
Through God’s guidance, he saved Egypt and gained a good reputation even in a foreign land.
Today’s passage from Genesis 42–44 tells the story of Joseph meeting his brothers again.
But this was no ordinary reunion. Joseph tested their hearts to see if they had truly changed.
He quietly watched how the brothers who once sold him would now respond.
Judah’s transformation, in particular, becomes a turning point in this powerful story.
Joseph the Governor – A Tearful Reunion with His Brothers
Joseph’s Final Test Before His Brothers
The famine was severe not only in Egypt but also in Canaan. Jacob told his sons to go to Egypt and buy grain.
Ten brothers set out, but Benjamin stayed behind.
The man standing before them was none other than Joseph, the governor of Egypt.
His brothers had no idea who he was, but Joseph recognized them right away.
The Bible says, “Although Joseph recognized his brothers, they did not recognize him” (42:8).
Imagine how many emotions must have rushed through his heart—joy, confusion, and old memories.
Who wouldn’t have felt the same in his place?
The Silver Cup — The Moment of the Final Test
Joseph wanted to know whether his brothers had truly repented.
He kept Simeon in Egypt and demanded that they bring Benjamin back.
When they finally returned with Benjamin, Joseph welcomed them with a feast and prepared his final test.
He secretly placed his silver cup in Benjamin’s sack and accused them of stealing it.
He watched to see whether they would abandon Benjamin like they once abandoned him—or if they had truly changed.
Judah’s Plea and Joseph’s Tears
Then Judah stepped forward. The same Judah who once suggested selling Joseph now begged to stay behind in Benjamin’s place.
“Our father will die if the boy is not with us... Please let me remain here as your servant in place of the boy, and let the boy return with his brothers” (44:31–33).
This was not a shallow plea but one that came from deep within his heart.
It carried both guilt from the past and a new sense of responsibility.
Their father Jacob had also made a painful decision. At first, he refused to send Benjamin, but hunger forced his hand.
“You will not see my face again unless your brother is with you” (43:3).
His words reveal the weight of that decision and the pain in his heart.
When Joseph saw Benjamin, he couldn’t hold back his tears.
The Bible says, “Deeply moved at the sight of his brother, Joseph hurried out and looked for a place to weep.
He went into his private room and wept there” (43:30).
Only after seeing their change could Joseph open his heart.
This was not a test for revenge—it was preparation for restoration.
🌿 Reflection — Can We Give a Second Chance to Someone Who Has Changed?
Joseph’s test was not meant to punish. It was to confirm their change.
Judah showed a transformed heart by offering himself to protect his brother.
That change deeply moved Joseph.
We also face people who have hurt us in the past.
Even if time has passed and they’ve changed, are we ready to open our hearts again?
Restoration doesn’t happen with their change alone—it also depends on whether our hearts are ready.
Years ago, I unexpectedly ran into a friend who once bullied me.
We sat on opposite sides of a Viking ride at an amusement park.
I could have said hello afterward, but the old wound was still there. I looked away.
My heart wasn’t ready yet.
If there’s a test you haven’t yet ended in your heart, maybe today is the time to ask God what your next step should be.
Because sometimes, we may also be standing on someone else’s test stage—just like I once did.
The test is over. Joseph is ready to reveal the truth.

📖 요셉의 마지막 시험, 은잔 사건, 유다의 간청 [창세기 42~44]
지난 이야기에서 요셉은 하나님께 받은 지혜로 바로의 꿈을 해석하고 애굽의 총리가 되었습니다.
7년 풍년과 7년 흉년을 대비해 애굽을 지켜냈고, 이방 땅에서도 이름을 높이게 되었어요.
오늘 살펴볼 창세기 42~44장은 요셉이 형들을 다시 만나는 이야기예요. 하지만 단순한 재회가 아니었어요.
요셉은 형들의 진심과 변화를 확인하기 위해 마지막 시험을 준비합니다.
한때 자신을 팔아넘겼던 형들이 지금은 어떤 마음을 가진 건지, 그는 조용히 지켜봅니다.
특히 유다의 태도 변화는 이야기의 흐름을 바꾸는 중요한 전환점처럼 느껴집니다.
형들을 다시 만난 요셉의 마지막 시험
7년 흉년은 애굽뿐 아니라 가나안에도 심각한 기근을 가져왔어요. 야곱은 아들들에게 애굽으로 가서 곡식을 사오라고 말합니다.
그래서 열 명의 형들이 길을 떠나지만 막내 베냐민은 집에 남습니다.
그들 앞에 선 총리는 다름 아닌 요셉이었습니다. 형들은 전혀 눈치채지 못했지만, 요셉은 그들을 단번에 알아봤어요.
성경은 이렇게 기록합니다. “요셉은 그의 형들을 알아보았으나 그들은 요셉을 알아보지 못하더라”(42:8).
형들의 앞에 선 요셉의 마음에는 여러 감정이 한꺼번에 몰려왔을 것 같아요. 반가움, 복잡함, 그리고 아마도 오래된 기억까지.
누구라도 요셉이었다면 그러하지 않았을까요?
은잔 사건 – 마지막 시험의 순간
요셉은 형들이 진심으로 회개했는지 알고 싶어 했어요. 그래서 시므온을 붙잡아두고 막내 베냐민을 데려오라고 요구했지요.
시간이 흘러 형제들이 베냐민과 함께 애굽에 돌아왔을 때, 요셉은 잔치를 베풀고 마지막 시험을 준비했습니다.
그는 자신의 은잔을 베냐민의 자루에 몰래 넣었습니다. 그리고 그를 도둑으로 몰았죠.
형들이 과거처럼 막내를 버리고 돌아갈 것인지, 아니면 달라졌는지를 보려는 시험이었습니다.
유다의 간청과 요셉의 눈물
그때 유다가 나섭니다. 과거 요셉을 팔아넘겼던 그 유다가 베냐민 대신 자신이 남겠다고 간청합니다.
“아버지가 아이의 없음을 보고 죽으리니... 내가 이제 주의 종으로 그 아이를 대신하여 머물러 있어 내 주의 종이 되게 하시고
그 아이는 그의 형제들과 함께 올려 보내소서”(44:31–33).
이건 마음 깊은 데서 나온 간청이었습니다. 과거, 요셉에 대한 죄책감과 책임감이 함께 묻어나는 듯 느껴져요.
아버지 야곱도 쉽지 않은 결단을 내렸습니다. 처음에는 막내를 보내지 않으려 했지만, 결국 굶주림 앞에서 아들을 떠나보냅니다.
“너희 아우가 너희와 함께 오지 아니하면 너희가 내 얼굴을 보지 못하리라”(43:3).
이 한마디에 야곱의 마음이 고스란히 담겨 있는 듯하죠.
요셉은 베냐민을 보는 순간 울음을 참지 못했습니다. 성경은 이렇게 말합니다.
“요셉이 아우를 사랑하는 마음이 복받쳐 급히 울 곳을 찾아 안방으로 들어가서 울고”(43:30).
그가 형제들의 변화를 확인한 뒤에야 마음을 열 수 있었던 이유가 여기에 있겠지요.
이 시험은 보복을 위한 게 아니라, 회복을 준비하는 과정이었던 듯합니다.
🌿 변한 사람에게 다시 기회를 줄 수 있을까요?
요셉의 시험은 벌이 아니라 확인이었습니다. 유다는 과거와 달리 자신을 희생하며 동생을 지키려 했고,
그 변화가 요셉의 마음을 움직였습니다.
우리도 상처 준 누군가를 다시 마주할 때가 있습니다. 시간이 흘러 그 사람이 변했다면, 나는 다시 마음을 열 준비가 되어 있을까요?
회복은 상대의 변화만으로는 완성되지 않아요. 내 마음의 준비도 필요하죠. 예전에 저는 저를 왕따시켰던 친구 중 한 명을 십 년이 지나
어느 놀이동산에서 마주친 적이 있어요. 바이킹을 탔는데 맞은편에 앉아 있었죠. 놀이기구가 끝난 후 인사를 나눌 수도 있었지만,
십 년이 지나도 당시 상처가 잊히지 않아서 모른 척했던 기억이 있어요. 저의 마음은 준비가 되어 있지 않았었죠.
혹시 아직 끝내지 못한 시험이 마음에 남아 있다면, 오늘 그다음 걸음을 하나님께 물어보는 건 어떨까요.
때로는 나도 누군가의 시험대 앞에 서 있는 사람일 수 있으니까요. 저처럼요.
요셉의 시험은 끝났습니다. 이제 그는 진실을 밝힐 준비를 합니다.
