Joseph’s Test as Governor – Benjamin and the Silver Cup [Genesis 42–44]

In Genesis 42–44, Joseph, now governor of Egypt, encounters his brothers again. But instead of revealing himself, he puts them through a series of tests. These trials are not out of vengeance but to see if they have changed—and to prepare his own heart for reconciliation.

Joseph’s Tears Before His Brothers – The Final Test with the Silver Cup

The famine reached Canaan, and Jacob sent his sons to Egypt to buy grain—except for Benjamin, the youngest. The brothers stood before the Egyptian governor, not knowing it was Joseph. But Joseph recognized them immediately and kept his identity hidden. “Although Joseph recognized his brothers, they did not recognize him.” [Genesis 42:8]

Joseph imprisoned Simeon and demanded they return with Benjamin to prove their honesty. Back in Canaan, Jacob was terrified to send Benjamin, but the need was too great. With a heavy heart, he let him go. When they returned, Joseph welcomed them with a feast, yet prepared one final test: he secretly placed his silver cup in Benjamin’s sack.

As they departed, Joseph’s men stopped them and accused them of theft. The silver cup was found in Benjamin’s bag. Now the true test began—would the brothers abandon Benjamin as they once did Joseph? But instead, Judah stepped forward. “If he is not with us, our father will die. Let me remain as your servant instead of the boy.” [Genesis 44:31–33, paraphrased]

Meanwhile, Joseph’s heart ached. He was overwhelmed by what he saw. His brothers had changed. Especially Judah—willing to sacrifice himself to protect his family. Joseph left the room to weep. “Deeply moved at the sight of his brother Benjamin, Joseph hurried out... He went into his room and wept there.” [Genesis 43:30]

These were not tests of cruelty. Joseph wasn’t trying to hurt them. He needed to know if the men who had once sold him were now capable of loyalty, protection, and love. And just as important, he needed to prepare his own heart to forgive them.

Reflection – Can We Give a Second Chance to Someone Who Has Changed?

Joseph’s tests weren’t meant to punish. He was searching for truth—had his brothers changed? Judah’s willingness to take Benjamin’s place showed that they were no longer the same men who had once betrayed him.

We’ve all been hurt. Sometimes we build walls, hoping to protect ourselves. But what if the other person has changed? The bigger question is—are we ready to trust again? Are we open to healing, not just from them, but within ourselves?

Reconciliation takes courage. It requires real change in others, and readiness in us. If there’s a relationship still stuck in silence or hesitation, ask God today: What do I need to prepare in my heart?

Joseph has seen enough. The test is over. What will happen when he finally reveals who he is?

총리가 된 요셉의 시험 – 베냐민과 은잔 [창세기 42~44장]

지난 글에서는 요셉이 이집트 총리가 되어 바로의 꿈을 해석하고, 7년 풍년과 7년 흉년을 대비하는 장면을 살펴보았습니다. 하나님이 주신 지혜로 요셉은 애굽을 기근 속에서도 지키는 지도자가 되었고, 이방 땅에서 그의 이름은 높아졌습니다. 이제 창세기 42장부터는, 가나안 땅의 기근으로 인해 형들이 애굽으로 내려오고, 요셉과의 재회가 시작됩니다.

창세기 42장부터 44장까지는 요셉과 형제들의 재회를 다루지만, 단순한 만남이 아닙니다. 요셉은 형들을 모른 척하며 여러 번 시험합니다. 그 시험을 통해 형들의 변화와 회개를 확인하고, 마침내 형제의 책임을 감당하는 유다의 간청이 드러납니다. 이 사건은 요셉의 용서와 하나님의 섭리로 이어지는 극적인 전환점이 됩니다.

형제 앞에 선 요셉의 눈물 – 은잔을 통한 마지막 시험

기근은 애굽뿐 아니라 가나안에도 심각했습니다. 야곱은 아들들에게 애굽으로 내려가 곡식을 사오라고 말합니다. 열 명의 형들이 떠났지만, 막내 베냐민은 남겨졌습니다. 그들 앞에 나타난 이는 다름 아닌 총리가 된 요셉이었습니다. 형들은 요셉을 알아보지 못했고, 요셉은 그들을 알아보았습니다.

“요셉은 그의 형들을 알아보았으나 그들은 요셉을 알아보지 못하더라” [창세기 42:8]

요셉은 형들이 진심으로 회개했는지를 확인하고 싶었습니다. 그래서 시므온을 잡아두고 베냐민을 데려오라고 요구합니다. 그리고 형들이 베냐민과 함께 다시 내려왔을 때, 요셉은 잔치를 베풀고는 또 한 번의 시험을 준비합니다. 바로 은잔 사건입니다. 요셉은 일부러 베냐민의 자루에 은잔을 숨겨두고 도둑으로 몰아, 형들이 그를 포기하고 돌아갈지 시험합니다.

이때 유다가 나섭니다. 유다는 자신이 대신 남겠다고 간청하며, 아버지 야곱의 마음과 형제의 생명을 지키려 합니다.

“아버지가 아이의 없음을 보고 죽으리니...내가...이제 주의 종으로 그 아이를 대신하여 머물러 있어 내 주의 종이 되게 하시고 그 아이는 그의 형제들과 함께 올려 보내소서” [창세기 44:31–33 요약]

그 과정에서 가장 깊은 갈등을 겪는 인물은 아버지 야곱입니다. 처음에는 베냐민을 보내기를 거절하지만, 굶어 죽을 수밖에 없는 현실 앞에서 결국 결단을 내립니다. “너희 아우가 너희와 함께 오지 아니하면 너희가 내 얼굴을 보지 못하리라” [43:3] 는 총리의 말 앞에서, 야곱은 떨리는 손으로 막내를 떠나보냅니다.

요셉은 감정이 북받쳐 한참 동안 울며 자리를 피해야 했습니다.

“요셉이 아우를 사랑하는 마음이 복받쳐 급히 울 곳을 찾아 안방으로 들어가서 울고” [창세기 43:30]

요셉은 형제들의 변화와 책임 있는 태도를 확인한 후에야, 마음을 열 준비가 됩니다. 이 시험은 보복이 아니라, 회복을 위한 준비였습니다.

🌿 묵상 – 마음이 변한 사람에게 기회를 줄 수 있을까?

요셉은 과거의 상처를 떠올리며 형들을 시험했지만, 그 시험은 벌주기 위한 것이 아니었습니다.
형들이 과거와 달라졌는지를 보고 싶었던 것이지요.
실제로 유다는 베냐민을 지키기 위해 자신을 대신 내어놓았습니다.
예전 같았으면 상상할 수 없는 변화였습니다.

우리도 누군가에게 상처받은 적이 있습니다.
그런데 그 사람이 변했다면, 나는 그걸 어떻게 확인할 수 있을까요?
그리고 정말 변했다면, 나는 그 사람에게 다시 마음을 열 준비가 되어 있을까요?

요셉처럼, 회복은 상대의 변화뿐 아니라 내 마음의 준비도 필요합니다.
혹시 지금, 마음속에서 아직도 시험을 끝내지 못한 관계가 있다면,
하나님께 그 다음 걸음을 여쭤보면 어떨까요?
