In the previous story, Joseph interpreted Pharaoh’s dreams with the wisdom God gave him. He became governor of Egypt and prepared for seven years of plenty and seven years of famine. By God’s guidance, he saved Egypt during the famine and gained respect even in a foreign land.
In today’s story from Genesis 42 to 44, Joseph finally reunites with his brothers. But this is no ordinary reunion. As a leader, Joseph tests his brothers who come seeking food because of the famine. Through these tests, he sees their repentance and change—especially in Judah, who once betrayed him but now takes responsibility for his family. This is a turning point of forgiveness and God’s providence.

Joseph’s Final Test Before His Brothers
The famine was severe in both Egypt and Canaan. Jacob told his sons to go to Egypt and buy food. Ten of them went, but Benjamin stayed behind. The man they stood before was none other than Joseph, now governor of Egypt. The brothers didn’t recognize him, but Joseph recognized them immediately. Imagine what Joseph must have felt! The Bible says, “Although Joseph recognized his brothers, they did not recognize him” [42:8].
The Silver Cup – Joseph’s Final Test
Joseph wanted to see if his brothers had truly changed. He kept Simeon in custody and demanded that they bring Benjamin back. When they returned with Benjamin, Joseph welcomed them with a feast, but he also prepared one final test. He placed his silver cup in Benjamin’s sack and accused them of stealing it, watching how they would respond. Would they abandon Benjamin as they had abandoned him?
Judah’s Plea and Joseph’s Tears
Judah stepped forward in a way no one could have expected. The very brother who once suggested selling Joseph now offered to stay behind as a servant to protect Benjamin and their father. He pleaded, “Our father will die if the boy is not with us... Please let me remain here as your servant in place of the boy, and let the boy return with his brothers” [44:31–33].
Jacob struggled deeply before making the decision to send Benjamin. At first he refused, but hunger left him no choice. “You will not see my face again unless your brother is with you” [43:3], he said, and sent Benjamin to Egypt. When Joseph saw Benjamin, his heart was overwhelmed. The Bible says, “Deeply moved at the sight of his brother, Joseph hurried out and looked for a place to weep. He went into his private room and wept there” [43:30]. Only after seeing his brothers’ change and responsibility did Joseph feel ready to open his heart. It couldn’t have been easy—facing those who had once betrayed him. This was never about revenge. It was about preparing for restoration.
🌿 Reflection – Can We Give a Second Chance to Someone Who Has Changed?
Joseph’s tests weren’t meant to punish. He longed to see whether his brothers had truly changed. Judah’s offer to take Benjamin’s place showed a heart transformed. The one who once betrayed Joseph was now willing to sacrifice himself.
We’ve all been hurt by someone at some point. What if that person has changed? How would we know—and are we ready to trust again? Like Joseph, restoration often requires not just change in others, but readiness in us. Is there a relationship where you’re still holding back? Ask God today what your next step should be. 요셉의 마지막 시험 – 은잔 사건 [창세기 42~44]
지난 글에서 요셉은 하나님이 주신 지혜로 바로의 꿈을 해석하고 애굽의 총리가 되어 7년 풍년과 7년 흉년을 대비하는 이야기를 했어요. 애굽을 흉년과 기근 속에서 지켜내며 이방 땅에서도 이름이 높아집니다.
오늘 이야기하는 창세기 42장부터 44장에서 드디어 요셉과 형제들의 재회가 이뤄지죠. 하지만, 단순한 만남은 아닐 거예요. 지도자로서 높아진 요셉은 기근으로 인해 찾아온 형들을 모른 척하며 여러 번 시험하죠. 그 시험을 통해 형들의 변화와 회개, 그리고 이전에는 자신을 팔아넘겼지만 이제는 형제의 책임을 감당하는 유다의 마음을 확인해요. 이 이야기는 요셉의 용서와 하나님의 섭리로 이어지는 극적인 사건으로 느껴져요.
총리가 된 요셉 – 형제들과 눈물의 재회
형들을 다시 만난 요셉의 마지막 시험
7년 흉년으로 인한 기근은 애굽뿐만 아니라 가나안도 심각했어요. 야곱은 아들들에게 애굽으로 내려가서 곡식을 사오라고 말해요. 열 명의 형들이 떠났지만 막내 베냐민은 남겨졌고, 그들 앞에 나타난 이는 다름 아닌 총리가 된 요셉이었죠. 형들은 요셉을 알아보지 못했고, 요셉은 그들을 알아보았어요. 세상에나! 요셉의 마음은 얼마나 복잡했을까요? 성경은 42장 8절에서 “요셉은 그의 형들을 알아보았으나 그들은 요셉을 알아보지 못하더라” 라고 전합니다.
은잔 사건 – 마지막 시험의 순간
요셉은 형들이 진심으로 회개했는지를 확인하고 싶었어요. 그래서 시므온을 잡아두고 베냐민을 데려오라고 요구해요. 형들이 베냐민과 함께 다시 내려왔을 때 요셉은 잔치를 베풀고, 또 한 번의 시험을 준비하는데 바로 은잔 사건이에요. 요셉은 일부러 베냐민의 자루에 은잔을 숨겨두고 도둑으로 몰아서, 형들이 그를 포기하고 돌아가는지 시험했죠.
유다의 간청과 요셉의 눈물
이때 유다가 나서요. 생각지 못한 흐름이죠. 요셉을 팔아넘겼던 그 유다가 자신이 대신 남겠다고 간청하며, 아버지 야곱의 마음과 형제의 생명을 지키려 해요. 그의 간청은 창세기 44장 31절에서 33절에 나와 있어요. “아버지가 아이의 없음을 보고 죽으리니... 내가 이제 주의 종으로 그 아이를 대신하여 머물러 있어 내 주의 종이 되게 하시고 그 아이는 그의 형제들과 함께 올려 보내소서”
그 과정에서 가장 깊은 갈등을 겪는 인물은 아버지 야곱일 거예요. 처음에는 베냐민을 보내기를 거절하지만, 굶어 죽을 수밖에 없는 현실 앞에서 결국 결단을 내리죠. 얼마나 깊고 무거운 결심이었을까요. 야곱은 43장 3절처럼 “너희 아우가 너희와 함께 오지 아니하면 너희가 내 얼굴을 보지 못하리라” 말하며 막내를 떠나보냅니다.
한편, 베냐민을 마주한 요셉은 감정이 북받쳐 한참 동안 울며 자리를 피해야 했어요. 성경에서는 이 장면을 창세기 43장 30절에서 이렇게 표현했어요. “요셉이 아우를 사랑하는 마음이 복받쳐 급히 울 곳을 찾아 안방으로 들어가서 울고” 요셉은 형제들의 변화와 책임 있는 태도를 확인한 후에야 마음을 열 준비가 되었나 봐요. 마음을 열기가 얼마나 힘들었겠어요. 자신을 팔아넘긴 형제들을 마주하는 심정을 누가 쉽게 재단할 수 있겠어요? 이 시험은 의심이나 보복을 위한 것이 아니라 회복을 위한 준비였을 거예요.
🌿 묵상 – 마음이 변한 사람에게 기회를 줄 수 있을까요?
요셉은 과거의 상처를 떠올리며 형들을 시험했지만, 그 시험은 벌주기 위한 것이 아니었던 것 같아요. 형들이 과거와 달라졌는지를 확인하고 싶었던 것이겠죠. 실제로 유다는 베냐민을 지키기 위해 자신을 대신 내어놓았어요. 요셉을 팔아넘기자던 예전 같았으면 상상할 수 없는 변화죠.
우리도 누군가에게 상처받은 적이 있어요. 그런데 그 사람이 변했다면, 나는 그걸 어떻게 확인할 수 있을까요? 그리고 정말 변했다면, 나는 그 사람에게 다시 마음을 열 준비가 되어 있을까요? 요셉처럼, 회복은 상대의 변화뿐 아니라 내 마음의 준비도 필요한 것 같아요. 혹시 지금, 마음속에서 아직도 시험을 끝내지 못한 관계가 있다면, 하나님께 그 다음 걸음을 여쭤보면 어떨까요? 오늘 내가 해야 할 준비는 무엇일까요?
요셉의 시험은 끝났습니다. 이제 그는 진실을 밝힐 준비를 합니다.
