As Jacob prepares to meet Esau, he prays alone by the Jabbok. That night, he wrestles with a mysterious man until daybreak. Discover how God answers through struggle, renames him Israel, and affirms His promise.
Wrestling into a New Name
It was a night of solitude.
Jacob had sent his family and servants across the stream and remained alone at the Jabbok.
As the time to meet Esau drew near, his heart grew heavy.
He prayed:
“You have said, ‘I will surely make your offspring as the sand of the sea, which cannot be numbered.’” [32:12]
Jacob clung to God's promise and pleaded with Him.
The memories of deceiving his brother and fleeing in fear may have haunted him. But now he was different.
He remained, trusting in the Lord's word.
Then it happened. A man began wrestling with Jacob.
They struggled through the night. It was no ordinary fight.
Jacob would not let go. He cried out,
“I will not let you go unless you bless me.” [32:26]
He was a man of prayer, yet also a man who held fast.
He did not flee. Even when wounded, he held on.
Then the man asked him,
“What is your name?”
🕊 Reflection – Until He Became Israel
1. The struggle was not outward—it was within.
Jacob had always wanted to get ahead, using whatever means necessary. But this time was different.
He was wrestling with God, not with man. He did not run away; even when he limped, he held on to the end.
This was more than desperation—it was a breaking before God.
He tried to secure blessing by his own strength, but in the end, he faced his weakness.
He was brought low, and he learned that only in surrender could he truly cling to God.
Prayer is not always kneeling; sometimes it is the confession that comes through being broken.
2. To win is to cling to the end.
Jacob did not win in the usual sense. He was injured and limping.
But he did not let go until he was blessed.
This is the victory of faith—to cling to God until the end.
Jacob’s wrestling was not just passion.
He sought God’s will and faced his own fragility.
Prayer is not only spoken with lips; it is fought through surrender before God.
In that struggle, Jacob was undone—and held on.
3. A new name means a new life
God did not merely change Jacob’s name.
He covered his past and gave him a new calling.
“Israel” was not a name that erased his failures, but a testimony of transformation.
It was the name of one who had been changed through the process.
God saw not just Jacob’s limping leg, but the faith that refused to let go.

야곱의 기도와 씨름 – 얍복강에서 이스라엘이 되다 [창세기 32장]
야곱은 형 에서를 만나기 전, 얍복강가에 홀로 남아 기도합니다.
그 밤, 그는 정체를 알 수 없는 사람과 씨름하며 하나님의 복을 구합니다.

씨름 끝에 얻은 이름
혼자 남은 밤이었습니다.
야곱은 가족과 종들을 먼저 건너보내고, 얍복 나루에 홀로 남았습니다. 형 에서를 만날 시간이 다가올수록 그의 마음은 무거웠습니다.
그는 기도합니다.
“주께서 말씀하시기를 내가 반드시 네게 은혜를 베풀어 네 씨로 바다의 셀 수 없는 모래와 같이 많게 하리라 하셨나이다” [32:12]
야곱은 하나님의 약속을 붙잡고 간구했습니다.
자신이 행한 일, 형을 속이고 도망쳤던 지난날의 기억이 떠올랐을지도 모릅니다. 그러나 이제 그는 달랐습니다.
약속을 의지해 하나님 앞에 머물러 있었습니다.
그때였습니다. 누군가 야곱과 씨름하기 시작했습니다.
밤새도록 이어진 이 싸움은 단순한 육체적 싸움이 아니었습니다.
야곱은 놓지 않았습니다. 그는 말합니다.
“...당신이 내게 축복하지 아니하면 가게 하지 아니하겠나이다” [32:26]
그는 무릎 꿇은 기도자였고, 동시에 붙들고 놓지 않는 사람이었습니다.
그는 도망가지 않았고, 다리를 다쳐도 붙들었습니다.
그 사람은 야곱에게 물었습니다.
“네 이름이 무엇이냐?”
🕊 묵상 – 이스라엘이 되기까지
1. 씨름은 외적 싸움이 아니라 내면의 격돌이었습니다.
야곱은 평생 누구보다 앞서고 싶어 했고, 얻기 위해 수단을 가리지 않았습니다. 그러나 이번엔 달랐습니다.
밤새도록 씨름한 상대는 사람이 아니었습니다. 야곱은 하나님과 씨름하고 있었습니다.
그는 도망가지 않았고, 다리를 절게 되면서도 끝까지 붙들었습니다.
이 싸움은 단순한 간절함이 아니라 하나님 앞에서의 내면의 무너짐이었습니다.
그는 자기 힘으로 축복을 얻고자 애썼지만, 결국 그 자리에서 자신의 연약함과 맞닥뜨렸습니다.
그는 점점 낮아졌고, 꺾여야만 하나님을 붙들 수 있다는 것을 배워갔습니다.
기도는 때로 무릎이 아니라, 깨어짐으로 드리는 고백이기도 합니다.
2. 이긴다는 것은 끝까지 붙든다는 뜻입니다.
야곱은 완전한 승리를 얻은 것이 아닙니다. 그는 상처를 입었고, 싸움에서 이긴 모습은 아니었습니다.
그러나 축복을 받을 때까지 놓지 않았습니다.
이것이 신앙의 승리입니다. 하나님을 끝까지 붙드는 믿음, 그것이 야곱을 이기게 했습니다.
야곱의 씨름은 단지 간절함의 표현이 아니었습니다.
그는 하나님의 뜻을 구했고, 그 뜻 속에서 자기 존재의 연약함을 마주했습니다.
기도는 입술로만 드리는 것이 아니라, 하나님 앞에 자신의 전부를 내려놓는 싸움이기도 합니다.
야곱은 이 싸움에서 스스로 무너지고, 하나님을 붙들었습니다.
3. 이름이 바뀌었다는 것은 삶이 바뀌었다는 뜻입니다.
하나님은 야곱에게 이름만 바꿔주신 것이 아닙니다.
그의 과거를 덮고, 새로운 사명을 부여하신 것입니다.
“이스라엘”은 과거의 실수를 무효화하는 이름이 아니라, 그 모든 과정을 통해 변화된 자에게 주시는 은혜의 이름입니다.
하나님은 야곱의 꺾인 허벅다리보다, 붙들고자 했던 그의 믿음을 보셨습니다.
