In the previous story, Jacob took the blessing meant for Esau and now finds himself fleeing from home.
Leaving behind his parents, he ends up sleeping in the wilderness with a stone for a pillow.
There, he dreams of a stairway to heaven and hears God’s promise.
This is the beginning of Jacob’s journey—from a fugitive to a man of covenant.
A Dream While Running – Jacob’s Vow
1. A Son Who Leaves, a Son Who Runs
Jacob had to flee from home after his brother Esau’s rage exploded.
Rebekah, fearing for Jacob’s life, urged Isaac to send him away to her brother Laban.
So Isaac called Jacob and blessed him once more. He sent him away like a fugitive—but not without a promise.
“May God Almighty bless you and make you fruitful and multiply you... and may He give the land promised to Abraham to you and your descendants.”
The blessing that began with Abraham now follows Jacob on his lonely journey.
2. A Dream at Bethel
As the sun set, Jacob stopped at a certain place. He took a stone and used it as a pillow.
That night, he had an incredible dream.
“He dreamed, and behold, a ladder was set up on the earth, and the top of it reached to heaven.
And behold, the angels of God were ascending and descending on it, and behold, the Lord stood above it and said…” [28:12–13].
3. God’s Promise
God said to Jacob in verses [28:13–14],
“I am the Lord, the God of Abraham your grandfather and the God of Isaac.
I will give the land on which you lie to you and your offspring.
Your descendants will be like the dust of the earth and spread to the west and the east and the north and the south.
All the families of the earth will be blessed through you and your offspring.”
And then, in verse [28:15], He gave this promise:
“I am with you and will watch over you wherever you go. I will bring you back to this land.
I will not leave you until I have done what I have promised you.”
To a man running away, God gave a steady and gracious promise.
4. Jacob’s Response and Vow
Jacob woke up in fear and said, “Surely the Lord is in this place, and I did not know it” [28:16].
Then he said, “How awesome is this place! This is none other than the house of God, and this is the gate of heaven” [28:17].
He got up in the morning, took the stone he had used as a pillow, and set it up as a pillar.
He poured oil on it and named the place Bethel. Previously, it had been called Luz.
Then Jacob made a vow to God in verses [28:20–22], saying,
“If God will be with me and watch over me on this journey and give me food to eat and clothes to wear,
so that I return safely to my father’s house, then the Lord shall be my God.
And this stone I have set up as a pillar will be God’s house, and of all that You give me, I will give You a tenth.”
🕊 Reflection – Faith Begins in Our Lowest Places
That night, Jacob slept with a stone as his pillow. It was the night of a fugitive.
He had left because of his brother’s anger. He was alone in an unfamiliar land, with nothing in his hands.
Surely fear and anxiety filled his heart. But in that lowest place, God laid a stairway.
Through that stairway reaching to heaven, God came near to Jacob.
Jacob hadn’t asked for anything. He wasn’t ready. But God spoke first.
He promised to stay with Jacob, to protect him, and never to leave him.
That promise wasn’t based on conditions.
Unlike Jacob’s vow, God’s word was pure grace—from God’s side alone.
Even in the wilderness, even on a stone, even in the middle of a fearful life,
God’s stairway reaches toward us too.
Faith doesn’t start when we’re ready—it begins when God finds us.
Like Jacob’s Bethel, God’s stairway may already be laid in our lives.
And at the end of that stairway, His promise is waiting.

벧엘의 사닥다리 – 도망자 야곱에게 임한 하나님의 약속
[창세기 28장]
지난 이야기속에서 이삭의 아들 야곱은 형 에서의 축복을 가로챈 대가로 형의 분노를 피해 도망길에 오릅니다.
사랑하는 부모님과 집 떠나 도망하는 길에서 돌을 베고 잠든 밤에 일어난 이야기예요.
하늘에 닿는 사닥다리를 보게 되고 하나님의 약속을 듣게 되는 야곱이 도망자에서 언약의 사람으로 바뀌는 야곱의 첫 여정을 함께 떠나보아요.
도망중에 꾼 꿈 - 야곱의 서원
1. 떠나는 아들, 도망치는 아들
형 에서의 분노를 피해 야곱은 집을 떠나야 했어요. 그의 어머니 리브가는 야곱의 목숨을 걱정하며 외삼촌 라반에게 보내자고 했고, 이삭은 야곱을 다시 불러 정식으로 축복하며 그를 떠나보냅니다. 그렇게 야곱은 도망자처럼, 그러나 복을 안고 길을 떠나죠.
“전능하신 하나님이 네게 복을 주시어 네가 생육하고 번성하게 하여 네가 여러 족속을 이루게 하시고 아브라함에게 허락하신 복을 네게 주시되 너와 너와 함께 네 자손에게도 주사 하나님이 아브라함에게 주신 땅 곧 네가 거류하는 땅을 네가 차지하게 하시기를 원하노라” [28:3–4]
2. 벧엘에서 꾸는 꿈
야곱은 해가 져서 어느 한 곳에 이릅니다. 그곳에 돌 하나를 가져다 베고, 그 위에 누워 잠을 청합니다. 그리고 그 밤, 놀라운 꿈을 꾸게 되죠.
“꿈에 본즉 사닥다리가 땅 위에 서 있는데 그 꼭대기가 하늘에 닿았고 또 본즉 하나님의 사자들이 그 위에서 오르락내리락하고 또 본즉 여호와께서 그 위에 서서 이르시되…” [28:12–13]
3. 하나님의 약속
하나님은 야곱에게 28장 13절과 14절에서 이렇게 말씀하십니다.
“나는 여호와니 너의 조부 아브라함의 하나님이요 이삭의 하나님이라 네가 누워 있는 땅을 내가 너와 네 자손에게 주리니 네 자손이 땅의 티끌같이 되어 서쪽과 동쪽과 북쪽과 남쪽으로 퍼져나갈지며 땅의 모든 족속이 너와 네 자손으로 말미암아 복을 받으리라”
그리고 이어서 15절에서 이렇게 약속하시죠.
“내가 너와 함께 있어 네가 어디로 가든지 너를 지키며 너를 이끌어 이 땅으로 돌아오게 할지라 내가 네게 허락한 것을 다 이루기까지 너를 떠나지 아니하리라...”
도망하는 야곱에게 하나님께서 든든한 약속의 말씀을 주셨어요.
4. 야곱의 반응과 서원
야곱은 깨어 두려움에 사로잡혀 28장 16절과 같이 외쳐요.
“여호와께서 과연 여기 계시거늘 내가 알지 못하였도다”
그리고 17절에서 또 말합니다.
“두렵도다 이곳이여! 이것은 다름 아닌 하나님의 집이요 이는 하늘의 문이로다”
그는 아침에 일어나, 베고 잤던 돌을 세워 기둥으로 삼고 그 위에 기름을 붓어요. 그리고 그곳 이름을 벧엘이라 불러요. 이전 이름은 루스였어요. 그리고 야곱은 28장 20절에서 22절과 같이 하나님께 약속합니다.
“하나님이 나와 함께 계셔서 내가 가는 이 길에서 나를 지키시고 먹을 떡과 입을 옷을 주시어 내가 평안히 아버지 집으로 돌아오게 하시오면 여호와께서 나의 하나님이 되실 것이요 내가 기둥으로 세운 이 돌이 하나님의 집이 될 것이요 하나님께서 내게 주신 모든 것에서 십분의 일을 내가 반드시 하나님께 드리겠나이다...”
🕊 묵상 – 가장 낮은 자리에서 시작되는 믿음
야곱이 돌베개를 베고 자던 그 밤은, 도망자의 밤이었어요. 형의 분노를 피해서 떠났고, 가진 것 하나 없이 낯선 땅에 홀로 남겨진 순간이었을거예요. 그 마음에는 두려움과 불안이 가득했을거예요. 그러나 하나님은 그 낮은 자리 위에 계단을 세우십니다. 하늘까지 닿는 사다리를 통해, 하나님은 야곱에게 다가오셨어요. 야곱은 아무것도 구하지 않았고, 준비되지도 않았을거예요. 그러나 하나님은 먼저 말씀하셨죠. 야곱, 너와 함께 있을거고 야곱을 지키며 떠나지 아니하신다라고요. 그 약속은 조건이 아니었잖아요. 야곱이 서원한 것과 달리, 하나님의 약속은 전적으로 '하나님 편에서 시작된 은혜'였어요.
광야에서도, 돌 위에서도, 불안한 인생 한복판에서도 하나님의 계단은 우리에게 닿아있지 않을까요? 우리가 준비되었을 때가 아니라, 하나님이 우리를 찾아오실 때 믿음도 은혜도 시작되는 것 같아요. 야곱의 벧엘처럼, 우리의 삶에도 하나님의 계단은 늘 놓여 있다고 생각해요. 그리고 그 끝에는, 하나님의 약속이 우리를 기다리고 있겠죠? 하나님이 나에게 어떤 약속을 주실지 기대되네요.
