After the tragic events surrounding Dinah, Jacob fell silent—crushed in grief. Now he rises again, walking toward the land of old promises. In this story, we follow his pain as a father, his loss as a husband, and his return to the God who still calls him.
The God Who Renames – From Jacob to Israel
The Place Where God Calls Again
Two people die in this chapter. One he loved deeply, and one he had leaned on all his life. Jacob buries them both—and walks on. Obeying God's command, he tells his household, just as in Genesis 35:2, “Put away the strange gods that are among you, and be clean, and change your garments.” The people hand over their idols and earrings, and Jacob hides them beneath the oak tree near Shechem.
A Covenant That Doesn’t Change
God appears again and reaffirms His covenant. “Thy name shall not be called any more Jacob, but Israel shall be thy name” [35:10]. And then He declares in Genesis 35:12, “The land which I gave Abraham and Isaac, to thee I will give it, and to thy seed after thee will I give the land.”
Jacob becomes Israel, and the promise stands—unchanged, unwavering.
Rachel’s Farewell and Isaac’s Final Breath
On the way home, grief awaits Jacob. Near Bethlehem, Rachel gives birth to a son but dies in the process. It’s a heartbreaking moment for Jacob. “And it came to pass, as her soul was in departing, (for she died) that she called his name Benoni: but his father called him Benjamin” [35:18].
Jacob, full of love, gives the child a name not of sorrow—but of strength and blessing.
Later, Isaac also passes away. “And Isaac gave up the ghost, and died, and was gathered unto his people, being old and full of days: and his sons Esau and Jacob buried him” [35:29].
Two brothers—once divided—stand together at their father’s grave, closing a long chapter of conflict.
🙏 Reflection
Jacob returns to Bethel. It was the place where he first encountered God, and now it becomes the place where God calls him again. Though storms have shaken his life, God welcomes him with the same promise, unchanging and faithful.
Rachel’s death must have been Jacob’s deepest sorrow. As she passed, she named the child Benoni—“son of my sorrow.” But Jacob changed the name to Benjamin, meaning “son of my right hand.” A name once filled with death becomes a name filled with hope.
And God still calls him “Israel.” That name wasn't just new—it was a calling to walk a different path. Jacob wavered, but God never did.
Even when we wander or grow weary, God remains at the place where He first called us. He speaks again. He renames us. And through all our wounds and failures, His promise remains—and He welcomes us back.

베델로 돌아간 야곱 – 라헬의 죽음과 이삭의 마지막
[창세기 35장]
가슴 아프고 참혹했던 디나의 사건 이후, 침묵으로 무너진 아버지 야곱.
그가 다시 일어나 걸어가는 길 끝엔, 오래된 약속의 땅 베델이 있었습니다.
이번 글에서는 아버지로서의 슬픈 상처, 남편으로서의 이별, 그리고 하나님 앞에서의 회복을 함께 이야기 해보려 해요.
이름을 바꾸신 하나님 – 야곱에서 이스라엘로
하나님께서 부르신 자리, 베델
같은 장 안에서 두 사람이 죽습니다. 한 사람은 사랑했고, 한 사람은 오래도록 의지했죠. 야곱은 그 둘을 묻고, 다시 길을 걸어야 했습니다. 야곱은 하나님께서 명하신 대로 베델로 올라갑니다. 그는 가족들에게 35장 2절과 같이 말합니다. “너희 중에 있는 이방 신상들을 버리고 자신을 정결하게 하고 너희들의 의복을 바꾸어 입으라” 사람들은 귀고리와 우상을 내놓고, 야곱은 그것들을 세겜 근처 상수리나무 아래에 묻습니다.
변하지 않는 하나님의 약속
하나님은 그를 기다리고 계셨습니다. 그리고 “네 이름을 다시는 야곱이라 부르지 않겠고 이스라엘이 네 이름이 되리라” 라며, 35장 10절과 같이 새 이름을 주셨고, 35장 12절 말씀과 같이 약속하셨습니다.
“내가 아브라함과 이삭에게 준 땅을 네게 주고 내가 네 후손에게도 이 땅을 주리라”
야곱은 이스라엘이 되었고, 하나님의 약속은 여전히 굳건했습니다.
라헬의 작별과 이삭의 마지막
귀환의 길에서, 뜻밖의 이별이 기다리고 있었습니다. 베들레헴 근처에서 라헬이 아들을 낳다가 죽게 된 것입니다. 생각만 해도 야곱으로 인해 마음이 아파지는 장면이예요. “그가 죽게 되어 그의 혼이 떠나려 할 때에 아들의 이름을 베노니라 불렀으나 그의 아버지는 그를 베냐민이라 불렀더라” [35장 18절]
사랑이 많은 야곱은 슬픔 속에서 태어난 아이에게, 축복의 이름을 건넵니다.
이삭도 죽음을 맞이하게 됩니다. “이삭이 나이가 많고 늙어 기운이 다하매 죽어 자기 열조에게로 돌아가니 그의 아들 에서와 야곱이 그를 장사하였더라” [35장 29절]
형제는 아버지의 죽음을 함께 지키며, 오랜 갈등의 여운을 접습니다.
🙏 묵상
야곱은 다시 베델로 돌아옵니다. 그곳은 처음 하나님을 만난 곳이었고, 지금은 하나님이 다시 부르시는 자리였습니다. 인생의 풍랑을 지나 돌아왔지만, 하나님은 한결같이 같은 약속으로 그를 맞으십니다.
라헬의 죽음은 야곱의 가장 깊은 슬픔이었을 거예요. 그러나 라헬을 떠나보내게 된 그의 막내아들에게 그는 저주의 이름이 아닌 축복의 이름을 붙여 주었어요. 라헬이 숨을 거두며 "내 슬픔의 아들"이라는 뜻의 베노니라고 불렀지만, 야곱은 "오른손의 아들"이라는 뜻을 가진 베냐민으로 부르죠. 자신의 힘과 축복의 상징으로, 죽음을 향한 이름이 아닌 삶을 향한 이름을 건넨 것이 아닐까요. 하나님은 여전히 야곱을 “이스라엘”이라고 부르셨어요. 이름은 과거를 끊고 새 길을 걷게 하는 부르심이었을 거라 생각해요. 야곱은 흔들릴지언정, 하나님은 흔들리지 않으셨습니다.
우리가 세상에서 많은 일을 겪고 길을 헤매다 돌아와도, 하나님은 처음 부르신 자리에서 기다리십니다. 다시 말씀하시고, 다시 이름을 불러주시죠. 우리의 실패와 상처를 꿰뚫고, 그분은 약속으로 다시 우리를 안아주시죠.
