The story of the Tower of Babel in Genesis 11 shows how the united ambition of early humanity was scattered by God's intervention. A city and a tower, built out of pride, came to a halt through language confusion—and in that moment, God's will was revealed again. What did God want us to learn from this event? From Human Pride to Scattered Tongues – The Tower of Babel in Genesis 11
Human Pride – The Desire to Reach the Heavens
Long ago, the whole world spoke a single language. People settled on a plain in the land of Shinar and said to one another,
“Come, let’s make bricks and bake them thoroughly.” So they used brick instead of stone, and tar instead of mortar. [11:3]
Then they said, “Come, let’s build ourselves a city, with a tower that reaches to the heavens, so that we may make a name for ourselves and not be scattered over the face of the whole earth.” [11:4]
Their desire to make a name for themselves above God’s purpose was pride—and they used the shape of a tower to stretch their ambition toward heaven.
Language Confusion – When Words No Longer Connect
The Lord came down to see the city and the tower the people were building. And He said,
“If as one people speaking the same language they have begun to do this, then nothing they plan to do will be impossible for them. Come, let us go down and confuse their language so they will not understand each other.” [11:6–7]
Just as God said, the people could no longer understand one another. Their united work was halted in confusion.
God’s Judgment – Scattered, Yet Still Guided
That place was called Babel,
“because there the Lord confused the language of the whole world. From there the Lord scattered them over the face of the whole earth.” [11:9]
God judged their pride, but even their scattering happened under His sovereign hand. Among those who were scattered, God continued His plan—and in the next chapter, He begins anew by calling Abraham.
The people who had once been united by the language God gave them ended up using it to exalt their own name. What was once grace became a tool to build something for themselves.
We may not be so different. Sometimes we see our gifts as our own achievement, and our confidence slowly turns into pride. The more we desire, the more we think we can rise higher by our own strength.
That’s when we should be most careful. When we start elevating ourselves above God without even realizing it. What if we’ve been building our own tower of Babel in our hearts? May we reflect on God’s purpose behind scattering the people, and choose to be grateful for today—walking humbly without rushing ahead of Him.

바벨탑 – 인간의 교만, 언어의 혼란, 그리고 하나님의 심판
[창세기 11:1–9]
창세기 11장의 바벨탑 사건은 인간이 하나가 되어서 이룬 첫 문명의 야망이, 결국 하나님의 개입으로 흩어지게 된 이야기예요. 교만으로 시작된 도시와 탑의 건축은 언어의 혼란으로 멈추었고, 그 안에서 하나님의 뜻은 다시 한번 드러나요. 하나님은 우리에게 무엇을 알게 하고 싶으셨을까 알아볼께요.
교만에서 시작된 바벨탑, 언어의 혼란으로 흩어지다
인간의 교만 – 하늘에 닿고자 했던 욕망
옛날 온 땅의 언어가 하나요 말이 하나였어요. 사람들은 시날 땅의 한 평지에서 서로 말했어요.
“자, 벽돌을 만들어 견고히 굽자” 하며, 돌 대신 벽돌을, 진흙 대신 역청을 사용했습니다. [11:3]
이후 그들은 뜻을 모아 말했죠.
“자, 성읍과 탑을 건설하여 그 탑 꼭대기를 하늘에 닿게 하여 우리 이름을 내고 온 지면에 흩어짐을 면하자” [11:4]
하나님의 뜻보다 자신들의 이름을 내고자 했던 마음은, 결국 교만이었고, 그것은 탑의 형태를 빌려 하늘을 향하려 했던 거예요.
언어의 혼란 – 서로의 말을 알지 못함
여호와께서는 그들이 건설하는 성읍과 탑을 보시고 말씀하셨어요.
“이 무리가 한 족속이요 언어도 하나이므로 이같이 시작하였으니 이후로는 그 하고자 하는 일을 막을 수 없으리로다. 자, 우리가 내려가서 거기서 그들의 언어를 혼잡하게 하여 서로 알아듣지 못하게 하자” [11:6–7]
하나님의 말씀대로, 사람들은 갑자기 서로의 말을 알아들을 수 없게 되었고,
한마음이던 작업은 혼란 속에 멈추게 되었어요.
하나님의 심판 – 흩어짐 속에서도 이끄시는 하나님
그곳 이름을 바벨이라 했어요.
“여호와께서 거기서 온 땅의 언어를 혼잡하게 하셨음이요, 거기서 그들을 온 지면에 흩으셨더라” [11:9]
하나님은 사람들의 교만을 심판하셨지만, 그 흩어짐조차 하나님의 주권 아래에서 이뤄진 일이었어요. 하나님은 흩어진 그들 가운데서도 새 계획을 이어가셨고, 그 다음 장에서는 아브라함을 부르시는 하나님의 뜻이 새롭게 시작하게 되죠.
하나님께서 주신 언어를 가지고 하나가 되었던 사람들은, 그 언어를 이용해서 오히려 자신들의 이름을 높이려고 했습니다. 하나님이 주신 은혜가 당연하고 그 은혜를 도구삼아서 자기만의 것을 이루고 싶은 마음이 생겼던 것 같아요.
우리도 그들과 크게 다르지 않을거예요. 내가 가진 달란트가 나의 능력이고 나의 힘으로 된 것 같이 느껴지며, 자신감을 넘어 자만해지는 순간이 있어요. 욕심이 커지고 더 높아질 수 있을 것 같은 생각이 들때요.
이런 순간은 참 위험한 것 같아요. 하나님보다 내가 높아지려는 때 말이예요. 나도 모르는 사이 마음속에 바벨탑을 쌓고 있었던 것은 아닌지 점검해보는 건 어떨까요? 바벨탑에서 흩으셨던 하나님의 뜻을 발견하며 그저 오늘에 감사하고 하나님보다 앞서려 하지 않는 오늘이 되면 좋겠어요.
