Blessed to Be a Blessing – Abram's Calling and the Egypt Incident

Abram had lived for a long time among his family in his hometown, Ur of the Chaldeans. It was a life of stability and familiarity.

One day, God's call came to him: "Go from your country, your people and your father's household to the land I will show you." [Genesis 12:1]

Without knowing where he was headed, Abram chose to trust God's voice. He took his wife Sarai, his nephew Lot, and all their possessions and set out on a journey.

God promised him: "I will make you into a great nation, and I will bless you; I will make your name great, and you will be a blessing." [Genesis 12:2]

Arriving in Canaan, God appeared to Abram again and said, "To your offspring I will give this land." [Genesis 12:7] Abram built an altar there and worshiped the Lord.

However, a severe famine struck the land. Seeking survival, Abram moved down to Egypt. Fear gripped him as he entered a foreign land. Sarai's beauty could bring him trouble.

Abram said to Sarai, "Say you are my sister, so that I will be treated well for your sake and my life will be spared." [Genesis 12:13]

Out of fear, Abram chose deception. Sarai was taken into Pharaoh's palace, and Abram received many goods. But the Lord intervened, sending serious diseases upon Pharaoh and his household.

Pharaoh summoned Abram and rebuked him: "Why didn't you tell me she was your wife?" He returned Sarai and ordered Abram to leave Egypt.

Abram left, journeying back toward the land God had promised him, carrying with him not only possessions but a renewed trust in God's faithfulness.

Even a man of faith like Abram stumbled in fear. Yet God did not abandon him. God's promises stood firm, not because Abraham was perfect, but because God is faithful.

We too falter, gripped by fear and uncertainty. Yet God's calling remains. His love does not waver when we stumble. His promise still stands over our lives.

Today, may we once again hear God's call and take a step of faith, knowing that even in our weakness, we are called to be a blessing.

[창세기 12장]

아브람(나중에는 아브라함)은 오랜 시간 고향 갈대아 우르에서 가족들과 함께 살았습니다. 익숙한 일상, 변함없는 주변 사람들 속에 그는 살아가고 있었습니다.

그러나 어느 날, 하나님께서 아브람을 부르셨습니다. "...너는 너의 고향과 친척과 아버지의 집을 떠나 내가 네게 보여 줄 땅으로 가라" [창세기 12:1]

아브람은 알지 못하는 땅을 향해 떠나야 했습니다. 그는 아내 사래와 조카 롯, 모든 재산과 사람들을 이끌고 길을 나섰습니다.

하나님은 아브람에게 약속하셨습니다. "내가 너로 큰 민족을 이루고 네게 복을 주어 네 이름을 창대하게 하리니 너는 복이 될지라." [창세기 12:2]

가나안에 도착했을 때, 하나님은 다시 말씀하셨습니다. "...내가 이 땅을 네 자손에게 주리라..." [창세기 12:7] 아브람은 그곳에 제단을 쌓고 여호와의 이름을 불렀습니다.

그러나 땅에 심한 기근이 들었습니다. 아브람은 가족을 데리고 이집트로 내려갔습니다. 그곳에서 그는 두려움을 느꼈습니다. 사래의 아름다움 때문에 자신이 해를 입을까 걱정했습니다.

아브람은 사래에게 말했습니다. "그대는 나의 누이라 하라 그러면 내가 그대로 말미암아 안전하고 내 목숨이 그대로 말미암아 보존되리라 하니라" [창세기 12:13]

아브람은 믿음의 사람이었지만, 두려움 속에서 거짓을 택했습니다. 결국 사래는 이집트 왕궁으로 끌려갔고, 아브람은 많은 재산을 받았습니다. 그러나 하나님은 이 상황을 가만히 두지 않으셨습니다.

여호와께서 바로와 그의 집안에 큰 재앙을 내리셨습니다. 바로는 사래를 돌려보내고 아브람을 책망하며 이집트를 떠나게 했습니다.

아브람은 다시 가나안 땅으로 돌아왔습니다. 실수하고 두려워했던 그였지만, 하나님의 약속은 여전히 변함이 없었습니다.

믿음의 사람 아브람도 두려움에 흔들렸습니다. 우리도 그렇습니다. 믿음을 가지고 걸어가다가도 넘어지고 흔들립니다. 그러나 하나님은 우리를 포기하지 않으십니다.

완벽하지 않아도 괜찮습니다. 넘어져도 괜찮습니다. 하나님은 여전히 우리를 통해 복을 이루어 가십니다.
