Abram, Still Called Between Faith and Fear
A life of familiarity and peace. Abram had lived for a long time with his family in Ur of the Chaldeans. He is the one to whom God would later give a new name: Abraham.
But one day, the Lord called Abram. "Go from your country, your people and your father’s household to the land I will show you." [12:1]
Abram had to leave for an unknown land. He took his wife Sarai, his nephew Lot, and all his possessions and people with him. When he arrived in Canaan, the Lord said to him again, "To your offspring I will give this land." [12:7] Abram built an altar there and called on the name of the Lord.
God promised Abram, "I will make you into a great nation, and I will bless you; I will make your name great, and you will be a blessing." [12:2]
But a severe famine struck the land. Abram went down to Egypt with his family. There, he felt afraid. Worried that Sarai’s beauty might put him in danger, he made a desperate decision. Sarai was taken into Pharaoh’s palace, and Abram received great wealth—but God did not ignore the situation.
Abram said to Sarai, "Say you are my sister, so that I will be treated well for your sake and my life will be spared because of you." [12:13]
The Lord inflicted serious diseases on Pharaoh and his household. Pharaoh returned Sarai and rebuked Abram, sending him away from Egypt. Abram returned to Canaan. Though he had failed and feared, God’s promise had not changed.
Abram’s journey began with obedience, but he wavered in fear. Yet God did not abandon him—He corrected him, not with condemnation, but by leading him back into the path of promise. Perhaps faith is not about perfection, but about the courage to return. Even after Egypt, Abram was still a channel of blessing, and God’s plan remained. So it is with us. Even when we fail, God’s blessing is greater than our fear.

복이 될지라 – 아브람의 부르심과 이집트 사건
[창세기 12장]
갈대아 우르에서 시작된 아브람의 여정과 이집트 사건을 따라갑니다. 두려움과 믿음 사이에서 하나님의 약속은 어떻게 이루어지는지 창세기 12장에서 살펴보세요.
믿음과 두려움 사이에서도 부르심을 받은 아브람
익숙한 일상과 평온한 삶. 아브람은 갈대아 우르에서 오랫동안 가족들과 함께 살아가고 있었습니다. 그는 훗날 하나님께서 ‘아브라함’이라는 새 이름을 주신 인물입니다.
그러나 어느 날, 하나님께서 아브람을 부르셨습니다. "...너는 너의 고향과 친척과 아버지의 집을 떠나 내가 네게 보여 줄 땅으로 가라" [12:1]
아브람은 알지 못하는 땅을 향해 떠나야 했습니다. 그는 아내 사래와 조카 롯, 모든 재산과 사람들을 이끌고 길을 나섰습니다. 가나안에 도착했을 때, 하나님은 다시 말씀하셨습니다. "...내가 이 땅을 네 자손에게 주리라..." [12:7] 아브람은 그곳에 제단을 쌓고 여호와의 이름을 불렀습니다.
하나님은 아브람에게 약속하셨습니다. "내가 너로 큰 민족을 이루고 네게 복을 주어 네 이름을 창대하게 하리니 너는 복이 될지라." [12:2]
그러나 땅에 심한 기근이 들었습니다. 아브람은 가족을 데리고 이집트로 내려갔습니다. 그곳에서 그는 두려움을 느꼈습니다. 사래의 아름다움 때문에 자신이 해를 입을까 걱정했습니다. 결국 사래는 이집트 왕궁으로 끌려갔고, 아브람은 많은 재산을 받았습니다. 그러나 하나님은 이 상황을 가만히 두지 않으셨습니다.
아브람은 사래에게 말했습니다. "그대는 나의 누이라 하라 그러면 내가 그대로 말미암아 안전하고 내 목숨이 그대로 말미암아 보존되리라 하니라" [12:13]
여호와께서 바로와 그의 집안에 큰 재앙을 내리셨습니다. 바로는 사래를 돌려보내고 아브람을 책망하며 이집트를 떠나게 했습니다. 아브람은 다시 가나안 땅으로 돌아왔습니다. 실수하고 두려워했던 그였지만, 하나님의 약속은 여전히 변함이 없었습니다.
아브람의 여정은 순종으로 시작되었지만, 두려움 속에서 흔들리기도 했습니다. 하나님은 그런 아브람을 바로잡으시되, 그를 책망하기보다 약속의 길로 다시 이끄셨습니다. 믿음은 완벽함이 아니라, 다시 돌아설 줄 아는 용기일지도 모릅니다. 이집트에서 돌아온 아브람은 여전히 복의 통로였고, 하나님의 계획은 중단되지 않았습니다. 우리도 마찬가지입니다. 실패했어도 괜찮습니다. 하나님의 복은, 우리의 흔들림보다 더 큽니다.
