The story of Cain and Abel is not about the form of worship but the heart behind it. God still seeks a posture of faith, not performance.
Faithless Worship and the Question for a Brother
Cain and Abel were the first brothers in human history. Born to Adam and Eve after they were cast out of Eden, they grew up in a world where life and death coexisted. Cain became a farmer, and Abel a shepherd.
One day, they each brought an offering to the Lord—Cain from the fruits of the ground, and Abel from the firstborn of his flock, including their fat portions. They both made an offering, but the outcomes were different. God accepted Abel’s offering but rejected Cain’s. Why? Because God looked not at the surface, but at the heart behind the gift.
Hebrews tells us that Abel offered his sacrifice by faith. It wasn’t just what he gave—it was how he gave it. The posture of his heart mattered to God.
Cain became furious, and his face fell. In Genesis 4:7, God spoke to him, saying, “Sin is crouching at the door. It desires you, but you must rule over it.” God warned Cain and, at the same time, gave him a chance to turn back.
But Cain didn’t listen. Overcome with jealousy and rage, he led his brother into a field—and there, he killed him. This was the first murder ever recorded in the Bible.
Then God asked him, “Where is your brother Abel?”
Cain replied, “I don’t know. Am I my brother’s keeper?”
But God already knew. “Your brother’s blood cries out to me from the ground.”
God pronounced judgment on Cain. He would no longer reap from the land, and he would become a restless wanderer on the earth.
Abel said nothing in his death, but the faith in his offering still speaks—his heart was honored by God.
Even though Cain committed such a terrible sin, God did not destroy him. Instead, He marked Cain with protection and continued to watch over his life.
God is the One who never gives up on people—or on love.

가인과 아벨 – ‘너의 아우는 어디 있느냐’ 그 질문 앞에 서는 마음
[창세기 4:1–16]
가인과 아벨의 이야기는 예배의 형식이 아닌 예배를 준비하는 마음의 중심에 관해 이야기합니다. 하나님은 믿음의 태도를 찾으시고 귀하게 여기십니다.
믿음 없는 예배, 그리고 형제를 향한 질문
가인과 아벨은 인류 최초의 형제였습니다. 아담과 하와가 에덴에서 쫓겨난 뒤, 이 땅에 태어난 두 아이. 삶과 죽음이 공존하는 세상에서, 각자의 길을 걸어갔습니다. 가인은 땅을 일구는 농부가 되었고, 아벨은 양을 돌보는 목자가 되었습니다.
어느 날, 두 사람은 각자의 소산을 가지고 하나님께 예물을 드립니다. 가인은 땅에서 난 것으로, 아벨은 양의 첫 새끼와 그 기름으로 제사를 드렸습니다. 둘 다 하나님께 예물을 드렸습니다. 하지만 결과는 달랐습니다. 아벨의 것은 받으셨고, 가인은 거절당했죠. 왜였을까요? 하나님은 겉이 아닌, 그 안을 보셨기 때문입니다.
히브리서는 말합니다. 아벨은 믿음으로 제사를 드렸다고요. 그가 드린 제물보다, 하나님은 그 마음을 귀하게 보셨습니다. 중심의 태도가 달랐던 것입니다.
가인은 몹시 분노했고, 얼굴빛이 변했습니다. 그때 하나님은 창세기 4장 7절에서 이렇게 말씀하셨습니다. “죄가 문에 엎드려 있느니라. 죄가 너를 원하나, 너는 죄를 다스릴지니라.” 하나님은 가인에게 죄가 문앞에 있지만, 너는 죄를 다스릴 수 있다고 경고하셨고, 또 기회를 주셨습니다. 하지만 가인은 하나님의 말씀을 듣지 않았고, 동생을 향한 분노에 휩싸여 죄를 짓게 됩니다. 아벨을 들로 불러내어 죽인 것입니다. 성경이 기록한 최초의 살인입니다.
그때 하나님은 그에게 물으셨습니다. “너의 아우 아벨이 어디 있느냐?” 가인은 “제가 아우를 지키는 자입니까?”라고 대답합니다. 하지만 하나님은 이미 모든 것을 알고 계셨습니다. “네 아우의 피 소리가 땅에서부터 내게 호소하느니라.”
하나님은 가인에게 심판을 내리십니다. 그는 땅에서 열매를 맺지 못하게 되었고, 세상을 떠도는 자가 됩니다. 아벨은 말없이 죽었지만, 믿음으로 예배를 드린 그의 마음은 하나님 앞에 귀하게 쓰임 받았다는 것을 보여줍니다.
끔찍한 죄를 지은 가인을 하나님은 죽이지 않으셨습니다. 오히려 보호의 표를 주시며, 여전히 그의 삶을 지켜보셨습니다. 하나님은 끝까지 사람을, 사랑을 포기하지 않으시는 분이셨습니다.
지금 내 마음은, 무엇으로 채워져 있을까요? 다른 사람과 비교하며 괴로움 속에 머물지 않기를 소망합니다. 오늘도, 주님 앞에 솔직한 마음을 드리고 싶습니다. 아멘.
