In the story of Cain and Abel, true worship is revealed not by form but by the heart. God still seeks a heart of faith today.

Cain and Abel were the first brothers in human history.

They were born to Adam and Eve after the fall, following their expulsion from the Garden of Eden.

From the very beginning, they lived in a world marked by sin and death—a world no longer whole.

Cain became a farmer, and Abel a shepherd. One day, each brought an offering to the Lord from the fruits of their labor. Cain offered crops from the ground, while Abel brought the firstborn of his flock and their fat portions. The Lord looked with favor on Abel and his offering, but not on Cain and his offering.

While Genesis doesn't explain why, Hebrews tells us Abel offered his sacrifice by faith. Abel offered in faith; Cain did not. God looks not at the form of worship, but at the heart behind it.

When Cain’s offering was not accepted, he grew very angry and his face fell. Then the Lord said to him: “Sin is crouching at your door; it desires to have you, but you must rule over it.” [Genesis 4:7]

But Cain did not heed the warning. He lured Abel to the field and killed him. This was the first murder recorded in the Bible.

God then asked Cain: “Where is your brother Abel?” [Genesis 4:9]

Cain replied, “I don’t know. Am I my brother’s keeper?” But God knew everything. He declared that Abel’s blood cried out from the ground and pronounced judgment on Cain. Cain was cursed to no longer yield crops and to become a restless wanderer on the earth.

This is not just a story of conflict—it’s about worship, the heart, sin, and our relationship with God. Though Abel died silently, his faith still speaks before God today. And that voice invites us to reflect on our own worship and hearts today. God still looks past form to see the heart, seeking not words but a faithful posture.

Today, God still asks us, “How are you treating your brother?” And He still delights in worship that comes by faith.

가인과 아벨은 인류 최초의 형제였습니다.

그들은 에덴동산에서 쫓겨난 아담과 하와 사이에서 태어났고, 죽음이 들어온 세상에서 새로운 삶을 시작했습니다.

가인은 농부가 되었고, 아벨은 목자가 되었습니다.

어느 날, 두 사람은 각자의 소산으로 하나님께 제사를 드립니다. 가인은 땅에서 난 것으로, 아벨은 양의 첫 새끼와 그 기름으로 제물을 삼았습니다.

하나님께서는 아벨과 그의 제물은 받으셨지만, 가인과 그의 제물은 받지 않으셨습니다.

성경은 그 이유를 명확히 밝히진 않지만, 히브리서는 아벨이 믿음으로 제사를 드렸다고 말합니다.

아벨은 믿음으로 드렸고, 가인은 그렇지 않았습니다. 하나님은 예배의 형식보다 마음의 중심을 보시는 분이십니다.

가인은 몹시 분노했고, 얼굴빛이 변했습니다. 그때 하나님께서 그에게 말씀하십니다: “...죄가 문에 엎드려 있느니라 죄가 너를 원하나 너는 죄를 다스릴지니라.” [창세기 4장 7절]

그러나 가인은 그 경고를 따르지 않았고, 아벨을 들로 불러내어 그를 죽였습니다. 이것이 성경이 기록한 인류 최초의 살인입니다.

하나님은 가인에게 물으십니다: “...네 아우 아벨이 어디 있느냐...” [창세기 4장 9절]

가인은 “모릅니다. 제가 아우를 지키는 자입니까?”라고 답했지만, 하나님은 모든 것을 알고 계셨습니다. 아벨의 피가 땅에서 부르짖고 있다고 말씀하시며, 가인에게 심판을 선포하십니다. 그는 저주를 받아 땅에서도 열매를 맺지 못하게 되었고, 세상을 떠돌아다니는 자가 됩니다.

이 이야기는 단순한 갈등이 아니라, 예배와 마음, 죄와 선택, 하나님과의 관계에 대한 이야기입니다. 아벨은 말없이 죽었지만, 그의 믿음은 지금도 하나님 앞에서 살아 있는 소리가 되었습니다. 그리고 그 울림은 오늘, 우리의 예배와 마음을 돌아보게 합니다. 하나님은 오늘도 형식보다 중심을, 말이 아닌 믿음의 태도를 보시는 분이십니다.

오늘, 하나님은 우리에게도 물으십니다. "너는 네 형제를 어떻게 대하고 있는가?" 그리고 여전히, 믿음으로 드려지는 예배를 기쁘게 받으십니다.
