Before the flood, the world was already filled with sin. Cain’s descendants built cities and developed culture, but they lived far from God. Amid rising wickedness, some began to call on the name of the Lord again. God’s heart was deeply grieved.
📘 In an Age Where Sin Was Normal, Some Called on the Lord
When Civilization Blossomed, God Was Forgotten
Cain, son of Adam and Eve, killed Abel and settled in the land of Nod in fear.
Though God protected him, he moved toward a life apart from God.
There, Cain built a city and began to shape civilization through his descendants.
Music, livestock, and metalwork developed, but their hearts drifted far from God.
Lamech’s Pride – The Depth of Human Sin
Among Cain’s descendants, Lamech took two wives and sang of his violence.
“Adah and Zillah, hear my voice… If Cain is avenged sevenfold, then Lamech seventy-sevenfold.” [4:23–24]
His words show how bold and shameless sin had become. From being protected, he now declared judgment on himself. Sin had become a boast, not a fear.
Calling on the Lord Again – The Line of Seth
But God was preparing a new beginning. To Adam and Eve, who had lost Abel, another son named Seth was born.
Among his descendants came Enosh, and it was then that people began to call on the name of the Lord.
“At that time people began to call on the name of the Lord.” [4:26]
As corruption deepened, some began to seek God with reverence. In despair, traces of faith began to glimmer.
A World Full of Sin, a Grieving God
As time passed, humanity increased on the earth. But sin spread along with their prosperity.
“The Lord saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth, and that every intention of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually.” [6:5]
Then God spoke in deep sorrow.
“The Lord regretted that he had made man on the earth, and it grieved him to his heart.” [6:6]
This moment—when the Creator grieved over His creation—reveals how deep and painful His love truly is.
Today, Whose Name Are We Calling?
Sin is always near us. It grows unseen, hiding in familiar language and behavior.
God’s name is increasingly forgotten, and sin becomes routine. Even in such darkness, God still leaves hope.
Just as there were people who sought God before Noah, we too can remember His name today.
Let us not grow used to sin, but become the one who calls on God again.

죄가 가득한 세상 – 노아 이전의 타락
[창세기 4:17–6:8]
홍수 이전, 세상은 이미 죄로 가득 차 있었습니다. 가인의 자손들은 도시를 세우고 문명을 발전시켰지만, 하나님과는 멀어졌습니다. 그러나 어둠 속에서도 여호와의 이름을 부르는 이들이 나타났고, 하나님의 마음은 깊이 아파하셨습니다.
🟦 죄가 일상이 된 시대, 여호와의 이름을 부른 사람들
문명이 피어날 때 하나님은 잊혀졌다
아담과 하와의 아들, 가인은 아벨을 죽인 뒤 두려움 속에 ‘놋’ 땅에 정착했습니다. 하나님께서 그를 보호하셨지만, 그는 하나님 없는 삶의 방향으로 나아갑니다. 그곳에서 가인은 성을 쌓고, 자손을 통해 문명을 이루기 시작합니다. 음악, 가축, 금속을 다루는 기술은 발전했지만, 그들의 마음에서는 하나님이 점점 멀어져 갔습니다.
라멕의 교만 – 죄가 드러내는 인간의 심연
가인의 후손 중 라멕은 두 아내를 취하고, 폭력을 노래합니다.
“아다와 씰라여 내 목소리를 들으라… 가인을 위하여는 벌이 칠 배일진대 라멕을 위하여는 벌이 칠십칠 배이리로다” [4:23–24]
그의 말은 인간의 죄가 얼마나 뻔뻔하고 대담해졌는지를 보여줍니다. 보호받는 자에서 스스로 벌을 선언하는 자로. 죄는 이제 두려움이 아니라 자랑이 되었습니다.
다시 부르짖는 이름 – 셋과 에노스의 계보
그러나 하나님은 새로운 시작을 준비하고 계셨습니다. 아벨을 잃은 아담과 하와에게 또 다른 아들, 셋이 태어났습니다. 그의 후손 가운데 에노스가 태어났고, 그때 사람들은 여호와의 이름을 부르기 시작합니다.
“그 때에 사람들이 비로소 여호와의 이름을 불렀더라” [4:26]
타락이 깊어질수록, 경외로 하나님을 찾는 사람들이 생겨났습니다. 절망 속에서 희미하게 빛나는 신앙의 흔적이 남겨졌습니다.
죄로 가득한 세상, 슬퍼하시는 하나님
시간이 흐르며, 인류는 땅 위에 번성했습니다. 그러나 번영과 함께 죄도 퍼졌습니다.
“여호와께서 사람의 죄악이 세상에 가득함과 그의 마음으로 생각하는 모든 계획이 항상 악할 뿐임을 보시고” [6:5]
그리고 하나님은 깊은 슬픔 속에서 말씀하십니다.
“땅 위에 사람 지으셨음을 한탄하사, 마음에 근심하시고” [6:6]
창조주께서 피조물로 인해 슬퍼하시는 이 장면은, 하나님의 사랑이 얼마나 깊고 아픈지를 보여줍니다.
오늘, 우리는 어떤 이름을 부르고 있는가
죄는 늘 우리 곁에 있습니다. 보이지 않게 자라며, 익숙한 언어와 행동 속에 숨어듭니다. 하나님의 이름은 점점 잊혀지고, 죄는 일상이 되어가는 어둠 속에서조차, 하나님은 여전히 희망을 남기십니다. 노아 이전에도 하나님을 찾은 자들이 있었듯, 오늘 우리도 그 이름을 기억하며 살아갈 수 있습니다. 죄에 길들여지지 않고, 하나님을 다시 부르는 그 한 사람으로.
