Lot and Abram Part Ways in Conflict [Genesis 13]

God’s Promise – All the Land You See I Will Give to You

1. Conflict on the Journey Together

After returning from Egypt, both Abram and Lot had gained great wealth and settled in the land of Canaan. As their flocks grew, arguments broke out between their herdsmen. The land was already inhabited by the Canaanites and Perizzites, which made the situation even more sensitive. Eventually, they had to part ways. But this wasn’t just a simple separation. “And the Canaanite and the Perizzite dwelled then in the land.” [13:7]

Abram spoke first to his nephew Lot. “Let there be no strife, I pray thee, between me and thee, and between my herdmen and thy herdmen; for we be brethren... If thou wilt take the left hand, then I will go to the right; or if thou depart to the right hand, then I will go to the left.” [13:8–9] Rather than insisting on his rights, Abram chose peace. It wasn’t passive—it was a decision born from trust in God’s guidance.

2. Lot’s Choice Based on What He Saw

Lot looked out and saw the fertile Jordan Valley. It was lush, well-watered, and reminded him of the garden of the Lord. “And Lot lifted up his eyes, and beheld all the plain of Jordan, that it was well watered every where, before the Lord destroyed Sodom and Gomorrah, even as the garden of the Lord, like the land of Egypt, as thou comest unto Zoar.” [13:10]

He chose the land and pitched his tents near Sodom. “Lot dwelled in the cities of the plain, and pitched his tent toward Sodom. But the men of Sodom were wicked and sinners before the Lord exceedingly.” [13:12–13] His seemingly wise decision would soon lead him closer to danger and compromise.

3. Abram Chose Faith Over Possession

After Lot left, the Lord spoke again to Abram. “Lift up now thine eyes, and look from the place where thou art northward, and southward, and eastward, and westward: For all the land which thou seest, to thee will I give it, and to thy seed for ever... And I will make thy seed as the dust of the earth... Arise, walk through the land in the length of it and in the breadth of it; for I will give it unto thee.” [13:14–17]

Abram moved his tent and settled near the oaks of Mamre in Hebron, where he built an altar to the Lord. “Then Abram removed his tent, and came and dwelt in the plain of Mamre, which is in Hebron, and built there an altar unto the Lord.” [13:18]

That day, Abram didn’t choose the land—he chose the promise. Can we make the same kind of decision? When we stand at a crossroads, will we chase what looks good or trust the one who gives lasting blessing?

Sometimes walking by faith feels slow or lonely. It may not be the easy road or the popular one. But may our steps today be confident—not in what we see, but in the God who sees us and leads us forward.

[창세기 13장]

하나님의 약속 – 네가 보는 땅을 다 주리라

1. 함께 걷던 길에서의 갈등

아브람과 롯은 애굽에서 돌아온 뒤 큰 재산을 이루며 가나안 땅에 자리를 잡았습니다. 그런데 소유가 많아지자 두 사람의 목자들 사이에서 다툼이 일어났고, 그 땅에는 이미 가나안 사람과 브리스 사람도 살고 있어 갈등은 더 민감해졌어요. 결국 그들은 함께 걷던 길에서 갈라서게 되죠. 이 이야기 속에는 단순한 분리 이상의 의미가 담겨 있어요. “그 땅에는 가나안 사람과 브리스 사람이 그 때에 거주하였는지라” [13:7]

아브람은 조카 롯에게 먼저 말을 꺼내요. “우리는 한 친족이라 나나 너나 내 목자나 네 목자나 서로 다투게 하지 말자... 네가 좌하면 나는 우하고 네가 우하면 나는 좌하리라” [13:8–9] 다툼 대신 양보를 택한 아브람은, 자신의 권리를 주장하지 않았어요. 그의 선택은 관대함에서 나온 것이 아니라, 하나님의 인도하심을 신뢰하는 믿음의 결정이었죠.

2. 눈에 보이는 풍요를 선택한 롯

롯은 눈을 들어 요단 들판을 바라보았어요. 소알에 이르기까지 물이 넉넉하고 기름진 그 땅은 마치 에덴동산 같이 느껴졌어요. “이에 롯이 눈을 들어 요단 지역을 바라본즉 소알까지 온 땅에 물이 넉넉하니 여호와께서 소돔과 고모라를 멸하시기 전이었으므로 여호와의 동산 같고 애굽 땅과 같았더라” [13:10]

그는 그 땅을 택해 동쪽으로 옮겨가 소돔 근처에 거주하게 되요. “롯은 그 지역의 도시들에 머무르며 그 장막을 옮겨 소돔까지 이르렀더라 소돔 사람은 여호와 앞에 악하며 큰 죄인이었더라” [13:12–13] 안타깝게도 화려해 보이는 선택은 곧 어두운 현실로 이어지게 되죠.

3. 땅보다 믿음을 택한 아브람

롯이 떠난 후, 하나님께서 아브람에게 다시 나타나 말씀하십니다. “너는 눈을 들어 너 있는 곳에서 북쪽과 남쪽 그리고 동쪽과 서쪽을 바라보라 보이는 땅을 내가 너와 네 자손에게 주리니 영원히 이르리라 내가 네 자손이 땅의 티끌 같게 하리니 사람이 땅의 티끌을 능히 셀 수 있을진대 네 자손도 세리라 너는 일어나 그 땅을 종과 횡으로 두루 다녀보라 내가 그것을 네게 주리라” [13:14–17]

아브람은 그 말씀을 붙들고, 헤브론의 마므레 상수리나무 곁으로 옮겨가 여호와께 제단을 쌓아요. “이에 아브람은 장막을 옮겨 헤브론에 있는 마므레 상수리나무 근처에 이르러 거주하며 거기서 여호와를 위하여 제단을 쌓았더라” [13:18]

아브람은 그날, 땅을 택하지 않았었죠. 대신 약속을 붙들었습니다. 우리도 아브람과 같은 결정을 할 수 있을까요? 선택의 자리에 섰을 때, 보이는 이익보다 하나님을 신뢰하는 길을 향해 걸어갈 수 있다면 좋겠어요.

때로는 그렇게 걷는 길이 더 멀고 느려 보일 수 있어요. 쉬운 길도, 많은 사람들이 가는 길도 아닐테니까 힘들겠죠. 그러나 오늘 우리의 걸음도, 하나님을 바라보며 담대하게 이어지기를 소망해 봅니다.
