After returning from Egypt, Abram and Lot faced a conflict because of their increasing possessions. See how Abram chose to trust God's promise rather than fighting for the land, and reflect on how faith leads to greater blessings.

Abram After Separating from Lot – All the Land You See I Will Give You

[Genesis 13]

Abram returned from Egypt and went up to the land of Canaan. Lot, who accompanied him, also had many possessions, and conflicts began to arise between them.

Their flocks, herds, and tents grew so numerous that the land could not support them together. At that time, the Canaanites and Perizzites were also living in the land, which made the situation even more delicate. [Genesis 13:7]

Abram said to Lot, "Let there be no strife between you and me, or between your herders and my herders, for we are relatives. If you take the left, then I will go to the right; or if you take the right, then I will go to the left." [Genesis 13:8–9]

Lot looked up and saw the whole plain of the Jordan, that it was well watered everywhere—before the Lord destroyed Sodom and Gomorrah—like the garden of the Lord, like the land of Egypt, as you go toward Zoar. [Genesis 13:10]

Lot chose for himself all the plain of the Jordan and set out toward the east. Thus, Abram and Lot separated from each other.

"Lot pitched his tents near Sodom. Now the people of Sodom were wicked and were sinning greatly against the Lord." [Genesis 13:11–13] Thus, Lot came to live near the sinful city of Sodom.

After Lot had gone, the Lord said to Abram, "Lift up your eyes from where you are and look north and south, east and west. All the land that you see I will give to you and your offspring forever. I will make your offspring like the dust of the earth, so that if anyone could count the dust, then your offspring could be counted. Go, walk through the length and breadth of the land, for I am giving it to you." [Genesis 13:14–17]

Abram moved his tents and went to live near the great trees of Mamre at Hebron, where he built an altar to the Lord. [Genesis 13:18]

Abram did not fight. His decision to yield was not mere courtesy, but a deep trust in God. Even as he let Lot choose the seemingly better land, Abram was not afraid or regretful.

God reaffirmed His promise to Abram, giving him the land and countless descendants as numerous as the dust of the earth. Abram trusted God's promise and worshiped Him as he walked into a new beginning.

We, too, sometimes face moments when we must let go of what seems good to trust in God's greater plan. Even when the path looks like a loss, faith leads us to blessings that last forever.

May we walk like Abram today, believing in God's unfailing promises.

아브람과 롯은 함께 큰 재산을 이루게 되었고, 결국 다툼으로 인해 갈라서게 됩니다. 이 이야기 속에서 우리는 믿음으로 양보한 아브람과, 그에게 주어진 하나님의 약속을 함께 묵상하게 됩니다.

롯과 갈라선 아브람 – 네가 보는 땅을 다 주리라

[창세기 13장]

아브람은 애굽에서 돌아와 가나안 땅으로 올라왔습니다. 함께한 조카 롯도 많은 재산을 이루게 되었고, 그로 인해 갈등이 생기기 시작했습니다.

양과 소, 장막이 많아지면서, 두 사람의 목자들 사이에 다툼이 생기기 시작했습니다. 그 땅에는 이미 가나안 사람과 브리스 사람도 살고 있었기에, 갈등은 더욱 조심스러웠습니다. [창세기 13:7]

아브람은 조카 롯에게 말했습니다. “...우리는 한 친족이라 나나 너나 내 목자나 네 목자나 서로 다투게 하지 말자 ...네가 좌하면 나는 우하고 네가 우하면 좌하리라” [창세기 13:8–9]

롯은 눈을 들어 요단 온 들판을 바라보았습니다. 그곳은 소알에 이르기까지 물이 넉넉하고, 여호와께서 소돔과 고모라를 멸하시기 전이라 마치 여호와의 동산 같고 애굽 땅과도 같았습니다. [창세기 13:10]

롯은 요단 들판을 택하고 동쪽으로 옮겨갔습니다. 아브람과 롯은 이렇게 서로 갈라섰습니다.

“...롯은 그 지역의 도시들에 머무르며 그 장막을 옮겨 소돔까지 이르렀더라 소돔 사람은 여호와 앞에 악하며 큰 죄인이었더라.” [창세기 13:12–13] 이렇게 롯은 죄가 가득한 소돔 근처에 살게 되었습니다.

롯이 떠난 후, 여호와께서 아브람에게 말씀하셨습니다. “...너는 눈을 들어 너 있는 곳에서 북쪽과 남쪽 그리고 동쪽과 서쪽을 바라보라 보이는 땅을 내가 너와 네 자손에게 주리니 영원히 이르리라 내가 네 자손이 땅의 티끌 같게 하리니 사람이 땅의 티끌을 능히 셀 수 있을진대 네 자손도 세리라 너는 일어나 그 땅을 종과 횡으로 두루 다녀보라 내가 그것을 네게 주리라.” [창세기 13:14–17]

아브람은 장막을 옮겨 헤브론에 있는 마므레 상수리나무 근처로 가서 살았습니다. 그리고 거기에서 여호와를 위하여 제단을 쌓았습니다. [창세기 13:18]

아브람은 다투지 않았습니다. 양보하는 결정을 했지만, 단순한 관용이 아니라 하나님을 신뢰하는 믿음에서 비롯된 행동이었습니다. 눈앞의 기름진 땅을 롯에게 넘겨주면서도, 아브람은 결코 두려워하지 않았습니다.

하나님은 그런 아브람에게 약속을 다시 확인해주셨습니다. 그가 바라보는 모든 땅을 주시겠다고 하시고, 그의 자손이 땅의 티끌처럼 많아질 것이라고 말씀하셨습니다.

아브람은 하나님의 약속을 믿고, 예배하며 새 길을 걸어갔습니다.

우리도 때로는 눈에 보기에 좋아 보이는 것을 내려놓아야 할 때가 있습니다. 겉으로는 손해처럼 보이는 길이라도, 하나님을 신뢰하며 믿음으로 걸어야 할 때가 있습니다.

하나님은 아브람에게 그러셨듯, 믿음으로 걷는 이들에게 더 크고 영원한 약속을 주십니다. 오늘도 아브람처럼 하나님의 약속을 믿고 걸어가는 하루가 되기를 바랍니다.
