Previously, Joseph tested his brothers. He framed Benjamin and watched how they would respond. Judah, the very one who once sold Joseph, stepped forward and begged to take his place. That moment changed everything. Seeing their hearts had truly turned, Joseph could no longer hide his identity. Though the brothers trembled in fear, Joseph forgave them and asked them to bring their father to Egypt.
Settling in Goshen – Jacob’s Family in the Land Prepared by God
Jacob Begins His Journey
Invited by Joseph, Jacob made preparations to leave for Egypt with his entire household. But before the journey, he stopped in Beersheba and offered sacrifices to God. That night, in a vision, God said, “I will go down to Egypt with you, and I will surely bring you back again.” [Genesis 46:4] Those words gave Jacob the courage to move forward. He set out without fear, holding on to the promise. Seventy family members traveled with him. It wasn’t a large number, but within that group was the beginning of a nation. Isn’t that remarkable?
The Reunion in Goshen
Joseph readied his chariot and went to meet his father. As soon as he saw him, he embraced him and wept for a long time. No words, just tears. “He threw his arms around his father and wept for a long time.” [Genesis 46:29] Those tears said everything. The longing, the loss, the love—it all came pouring out. Joseph then prepared a place for his family in Goshen and got ready to present them to Pharaoh. Even now, he remained faithful to the task God had given him.
Jacob Stands Before Pharaoh
When Pharaoh asked Jacob about his age, Jacob replied, “The years of my pilgrimage are one hundred and thirty... My years have been few and difficult.” [Genesis 47:9] Such a short answer, yet full of depth—years of wandering, sorrow, and grace. Jacob blessed Pharaoh and quietly stepped back. As recorded in [Genesis 47:7, 47:10], wherever he went, the man of God remained a source of blessing. That isn’t always easy—but it is powerful.
Planting Roots in Goshen
Though the famine continued, Goshen became a place of rest and safety for Jacob’s family. Pharaoh allowed them to settle there, and Joseph ensured they had all they needed. It was a quiet and overlooked land, but that’s where God’s covenant continued. They worked, they waited, and they held tightly to the promises. The name “Goshen” may not have been widely known, but it became the birthplace of a future.
Our Goshen
Jacob didn’t choose Goshen—it was chosen for him. And yet, it became the space where God preserved life and prepared the next generation. Maybe you’ve found yourself in a place you didn’t expect. But what if that’s your Goshen? It might not look like abundance, but it could be where God is quietly sustaining you. 야곱의 이집트 고센 정착 [창세기 46–47장]
앞선 이야기에서, 요셉은 형제들을 시험했었어요. 막내 베냐민에게 죄를 씌운 뒤 형들의 반응을 지켜보았죠. 자신을 팔았던 유다가 나서서, 막내 대신 자신이 종이 되겠다고 간청하는 장면은 참 인상 깊었어요. 그 모습을 본 요셉은 형들의 마음이 바뀌었음을 확인했고, 마침내 자신의 정체를 밝히게 됩니다. 형들은 놀라움과 두려움에 떨었지만, 요셉은 그들을 용서하며 아버지 야곱을 이집트로 모셔오라고 말했어요.
이집트 고센, 준비된 땅에서 정착한 야곱의 가족 이야기
이주를 시작한 야곱
요셉의 초청을 받은 야곱은 가족과 함께 애굽으로 떠날 준비를 합니다. 출발 전, 그는 브엘세바에서 하나님께 제사를 드리죠. 그날 밤, 하나님은 환상 가운데 야곱에게 나타나 이렇게 말씀하십니다. “내가 너와 함께 애굽으로 내려가겠고, 반드시 너를 인도하여 다시 올라오게 하겠다.” 창세기 46장 4절의 이 말씀은 야곱의 마음을 붙잡았고, 그는 두려움 없이 길을 나서게 됩니다. 함께 떠난 가족은 모두 70명. 많지는 않았지만, 그들은 한 민족의 시작이 될 씨앗이었어요. 이 장면, 아무리 생각해도 놀랍죠.
고센에서의 만남
요셉은 마차를 준비해 직접 고센으로 올라가 아버지를 맞이합니다. 아버지를 본 순간, 그저 말없이 껴안고 오래도록 울었어요. “요셉이 그의 수레를 갖추고 고센으로 올라가서... 그의 목을 어긋맞춰 안고 얼마 동안 울매” 서로가 얼마나 그리웠는지, 그 눈물이 모든 걸 말해주는 것 같아요. 그 순간은 말이 필요 없었겠죠. 요셉은 고센에 가족의 거처를 마련하고, 바로에게 소개하기 위한 준비도 함께 합니다. 그는 여전히 하나님이 맡기신 사명을 끝까지 감당하고 있었어요.
바로 앞에 선 야곱
야곱은 바로를 만나서 받은 그의 질문에 창세기 47장 9절과 같이 대답합니다. “내 나그네 길의 세월이 백삼십 년이니이다... 험악한 세월을 보내었나이다.” 짧은 대답이지만, 그 안에는 긴 여정과 많은 고난, 그리고 하나님의 인도하심이 담겨 있었습니다. 야곱은 바로를 축복하고, 조용히 물러납니다. 창세기 47장 7절과 10절에서 나오듯이, 하나님의 사람은 아무리 다른 자리라도 결국 축복하는 사람으로 남더라고요. 그게 쉬운 일은 아니지만요.
고센에 뿌리내리다
기근은 계속되었지만, 고센은 야곱 가족에게 안식과 보호의 땅이 되어 주었습니다. 바로는 그들에게 그 땅을 허락했고, 요셉은 거처와 생계의 터전을 마련해 주었어요. 조용하고 눈에 띄지 않는 땅이었지만, 고센은 하나님의 언약이 다음 세대로 이어지는 장소였습니다. 그들은 그곳에서 생업을 이어가며, 하나님이 주신 약속을 가슴에 품고 미래를 준비했지요. 이름조차 잘 알려지지 않은 땅이었는데 말이에요.
우리의 고센
야곱은 낯선 땅으로 향했지만, 그 길은 이미 하나님이 예비하신 길이었을 거예요. 고센은 기근 중에도 생명이 유지되던 땅이었고, 하나님의 계획이 이어질 장소였습니다. 혹시 지금, 예상하지 못한 자리에 놓여 있을 수 있어요. 하지만 그곳이 바로 하나님이 인도해주신 여러분의 고센일 수 있어요. 때로는 부족하고 불편해 보이는 자리일지라도, 하나님은 그곳에서 당신을 지키고 계실 거예요. 야곱의 마지막 여정처럼, 우리 인생에서 하나님의 인도하심은 여전히 계속되고 있습니다. 그러니, 너무 걱정하지 마세요.
